Ronald John Haitema

Ronald John Haitema, 84, of Littleton died Wednesday, March 4, 2015 at Halifax Regional Medical Center.  

Mr. Haitema was born March 25, 1930 in Grand Rapids, Michigan to the late Dr. John Samuel and Elsa Mae Hayma Haitema.

 He served 5 years in United States Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict.  

He retired as an Installment Loan Officer with Citi Bank & Trust in Jackson, MI.  

Mr. Haitema was also a member of Calvary United Methodist Church and sang in a barbershop quartet.  

He helped build 4 homes with Habitat for Humanity in Warren County.

 In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his brother Milton Haitema who passed away in 1993.

 He is survived by his wife of 46 years Carroll Haitema of Littleton; his son John Michael Haitema of Norlina; his daughter Anita Kaye Ward and husband Richard of Montpellier, Va.; his step-daughter Roxanne Lynne Tenney Morin and husband Ramon of Lansing, MI; his granddaughter Sabrina Ward; his nephews Tom Haitema and wife Margie; David Haitema and wife Margaret; his niece Martha Jane Haitema; his great-nieces and nephews Brenda Mae Haitema; Ransom Haitema; Greyson Haitema; Katie Haitema; Joshua Haitema; and Nathaniel Haitema.  

A memorial service celebrating Mr. Haitema’s life will be held Sunday, March 8, 2015 at 1:00 PM at Calvary United Methodist Church with Rev. Stan Lewis officiating.

Mrs. Margaret Lane Shepard Cooke, age 86 formerly of Ahoskie and Aulander, NC passed away March 7, 2015 at Golden Living Center — Elizabeth Adam Crump House in Glen Allen, VA.

She was born May 19, 1928 in Bertie County North Carolina the daughter of the late Oscar Shepard and Lottie Mae Askew Shepard.

Mrs. Cooke was also preceded in death by her husband Willie Abe Cooke.

She was a homemaker for many years taking care of her family whom she loved dearly.

Margaret had been living in Glen Allen, VA for some time now and was a member of Evangel Assembly of God Church in Glen Allen, VA.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughter Ivey Cooke Lassiter and husband Ray of Ahoskie, NC; Her son Oscar Wayne Cooke and wife Sharon of Richmond, VA; Her four grandchildren Matthew Cooke, Amanda Cooke, Danielle Urbe and Kenneth Lassiter and her twelve great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held Tuesday, March 10, 2015 at Aulander Cemetery at 1:00 PM with Rev. Jim Cox officiating.

The family will receive friends prior to the service at Massey Funeral Home in Aulander, NC from 11:00 AM until 12:30 PM. We will then go in a funeral procession to Aulander Cemetery.

John Patrick 'Johnny' Fowler II

John Patrick "€œJohnny"€ Fowler II, 59, of Roanoke Rapids, departed this life on Wednesday, March 4, 2015.

Johnny was the son of the late Calvin W. Fowler and Acree Jones Fowler.

He is survived by his wife, Shelia Gail Fowler; his children, Samuel Nick Brown and Jessica Dawn Fowler; five grandchildren; his mother, Acree Fowler Scott; two brothers and one sister.

Memorial services will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, March 9 at Maranatha Baptist Church on Zoo Road in Roanoke Rapids  with Rev. Mike Little and Rev. Howard Kendrick officiating.

Arrangements are being handled by Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids.

 

Geraldine 'Ann' Stone Thacker

Geraldine “Ann” Stone Thacker of Gaston, passed away on Monday, March 9, 2015.  

She was the daughter of the late Poley and Mary Stone.  

Ann was well known as a cosmetologist in the Northampton County area for 50 years.  She was a wonderful grandmother and loved keeping her grandchildren.  

She is survived by her daughters, Debra Dickens of Gaston and Betty Robertson of South Carolina; her granddaughters, Heather Tuck and her husband, Michael of Garysburg, Holly Dickens of Angier, Julie Forbes and her husband, T.J. of Black Mountain, NC; her grandsons, John Fields and his wife, Shannon, and James Fields, all of South Carolina; her sister, Fannie Tompkins and her husband, Marion of Roanoke Rapids; her brother, Bob Stone and his wife, Ida Mae of Florida; her son in law Raymond Dickens of Roanoke Rapids; and 10 great grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held on Wednesday, March 11, 2015 at 11:00 AM at Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids with Pastor Gary Moore officiating.

David Hobart Young, age 62, of Roanoke Rapids, passed away on Sunday, March 8, 2015.  

He was the son of the late William and Joan Young.

David loved cooking and entertaining others and loved his dogs, Tux, Zedo, Bonnie Blue, Rhett, and Scarlett.

He is survived by his life partner, Paul Spiegler; his sister, Susan Young Hines and her husband, Gary of Virginia Beach, VA; his niece, Emily Kamppi and her husband, Alan and his nephew, William David Hines, all of Virginia Beach; his special friends from church, Julia Ann Fitts, Muzette Kiger and her husband, Jack, Dr. John Moss and his wife, Charlotte, Dr. Richard Holm and his wife, Dr. Rev. Marjorie Holm, Rev. Jane Love, and Rev. Joseph Sandoval and his wife, Nancy.

Memorial Services arranged by Askew Funeral and Cremation Services will be held on Thursday, March 12, 2015 at 1:00 PM at First Presbyterian Church in Roanoke Rapids, with Rev. Joseph Sandoval officiating.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 P.M. Saturday, March 14, 2015 at Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Service with Rev. Wayne White officiating. Burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery with Military Honors.  

The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 P.M. Friday, March 13, 2015 at the funeral home and other times at the home 708 Raleigh Drive.

Acey Thomas Smith

Acey Thomas Smith, 84, died at his home surrounded by his family, Friday, March 13, 2015.

Mr. Smith was born in Littleton, NC, December 2, 1930, to the late Joe Smith and Cinderella Wood Smith.

He was a Korean War Veteran and member of the American Legion.  

Mr. Smith retired from Champion International after 39 ½ years of service and was a member of Weaver’s Chapel United Methodist Church.  

He also volunteered with Habitat for Humanity for 11 years.  In addition to his parents, Mr. Smith was preceded in death by two brothers, James and Lynn Smith.

Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Pauline Thortis Smith of the home; two sons, Tommy Smith and wife, Susan, of Punta Gorda, FL and Billy Smith and wife, Alice Anne, of Roanoke Rapids; daughter, Sheree Pilgreen and husband, Doug, of Roanoke Rapids; brothers, Mack Smith and wife, Clyde, and J.B. Smith and wife, Shirley; sisters, Josephine Myrick and Virginia Johnston; sister-in-law, Mary T. Warwick.  Also surviving are 10 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews to cherish his memory.

The family will receive friends Monday, March 16, 2015 from 6-8 pm at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service and all other times at the home.  Rev. Stan Lewis will conduct funeral services at Weaver’s Chapel United Methodist Church Tuesday, March 17, 2015 at 11:00 am with interment to follow in the church cemetery.

Flowers are accepted and the family has suggested memorial contributions be made to Weaver’s Chapel United Methodist Church Memorial Fund or a charity of one’s choice.

Minnie Marcella Wray Moore

Minnie Marcella Wray Moore age 80, of Roanoke Rapids, NC passed away peacefully in her home on Friday, March 13, 2015.

Mrs. Moore was born July 4, 1934, the daughter of the late Robert Lee Wray and Mary Ola Jordan Wray. She was also preceded in death by her husband, W.D. “Bam” Moore, her twin sister Devella Wray High and sister Shirley Wray Stokes, her brother Robert Wray and her grandson Bryan Moore.

Marcella was born and raised in Gaston, NC and graduated from Gaston High School.  She worked as a bookkeeper at Roanoke Builders Supply and helped Bam manage Moore’s Super Market in Gaston.  She was married to Bam for 57 years.

She is survived by her son, Todd, his wife Janet, and their sons, Kevin and Steven; her son Rich, his wife Janet, their son Collin; her step-daughter, Christine Brown, her husband Len, her sons, Kenny Goodfellow and Tim Goodfellow; her sister Peggy Massey, her husband Jimmy, their daughters, Chris, Karen and Michelle; her sister Debbie Edwards, her husband Bennie and their daughters Dana and Holly.

Funeral services will be held Friday, March 20, 2015 at 3:00 PM at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids with Rev. Randy Martin officiating. Burial will follow at Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids

The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home Thursday, March 19, 2015 from 7:00 until 8:30 PM.

The family would like to thank Mrs. Moore’s caregivers and Community Home Health and Hospice whose love and care allowed Mrs. Moore to stay at her home in her final days.

Mrs. Margaret Woodard Edwards age 84, of Margarettsville, NC passed away March 15, 2015.

Mrs. Edwards was born March 15, 1931 in Northampton County, NC, the daughter of the late Raymond Woodard and Carrie Revelle Woodard.  She was also preceded in death by her husband, Raymond E. Edwards, two sisters, Estelle W. Daughtry and Mary W. Edwards and two brother, Roy Woodard and Lewis Woodard.  She was a member of Sharon Methodist Church.

 She is survived by her daughter, Cathy E. Corey and her husband Karl of Margarettsville, NC and her son Michael Edwards and his wife Regina of Jacksonville, NC.  Her brother, Calvin Woodard of Margarettsville, NC. Her sister, Sarah W. Plank of Florida.  Two granddaughters, Ana and Maria Edwards.

 Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 18, 2015 at 2:00 PM at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson, NC.

 The family will receive friends at the funeral home beginning at 1:00 PM until service time.

Chad Lawrence Geary

Chad Lawrence Geary, age 40, of Roanoke Rapids, passed away on Monday, March 16, 2015.  

He is the son of the late Andrew Lawrence Geary and Beverly Urbach.

Chad was a long time teacher with Roanoke Rapids Graded School District and most recently his position was Learning Facilitator.  He was also a former coach with Roanoke Rapids High School.  He coached his son’s summer baseball league and his travel team, “The Fishers”.

He is survived by his wife, Heidi Lynn Geary; their son, Austin Geary and their daughter, Addison Geary of the home; his brother, Ryan Geary, Sr. of Uniontown, PA; his sisters, Missy Geary of Ohiopyle, PA, Courtney Pavlicko and her husband, John of New Salem, PA; his step mother, Louise Geary of Uniontown, PA; his mother and father in law, Jack and Donna Gates of Danville, PA; his sister in law, Nikki Snead and her husband, Mark of Roanoke Rapids; his brother in law, Michael Stenson and his wife, Tammy of Farmington, PA; his nieces, Taylor Geary, Emma Snead; his nephews, Ryan Geary, Jr., Drew Geary, Broady Pavlicko and Ben Snead;  and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Funeral services with Military Rites will be held on Thursday, March 19, 2015 at 4:00 PM at Rosemary United Methodist Church in Roanoke Rapids with Rev. Bob Redmond officiating.

Visitation will be at Askew Funeral and Cremation Services on Wednesday, March 18, 2015 from 1:00 PM until 3:00 PM and from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM.

Ella Christine Harris Gums

Ella Christine Harris Gums, 91, of Roanoke Rapids passed away on Tuesday, March 17, 2015.  

She was the daughter of the late Tom Jackson and Christine Beard Harris.  

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Robert Warren Gums, her daughter, Brenda Gums Martin, her brother, Diamond Harris, her sister, Pattie Becker, and one granddaughter.  

Ella was a member of New Testament Christian Church.

She is survived by her daughter, Jeanne Harris and her husband, Steve of Emporia, VA; her sons, Larry Gums and his wife, Susan of Roanoke Rapids and Donny Gums, also of Roanoke Rapids; her sisters, Ruth Wester and Addie Mae Stratton, both of Roanoke Rapids, Nancy Patton and her husband, Jesse of Darlington, and Mary Williams and her husband, Donald of LaGrange, NC; her brother, Tom Harris and his wife, Doris of Aurelian Springs; 11 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 20, 2015 at 11:00 AM at New Testament Christian Church with Ministers Dave Morris and Daniel West officiating.

Visitation will be Thursday, March 19, 2015 from 6:30 to 8:00 PM at Askew Funeral and Cremation Services.

Edith Faye Hall, age 62 formerly of Seaboard, NC passed away March 18, 2015.

Edith Faye was born February 14, 1953 in Halifax County ,North Carolina, the daughter of the late George Perry Hall Sr. and Marion Worsham Hall.

She was a longtime resident of Seaboard where she attended school and was a member of Seaboard Baptist Church.

She is survived by her sister, Gail Hall Bass and her husband Gary of Leland, NC, her brother, George Perry Hall Jr. and his wife Karen of Shelby. Also several nieces and nephews.

 Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 21, 2015 at 2:00 PM at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids with Rev. Jim Cox and Rev. Richard Gaskins officiating.  Burial will follow at Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids.

Hollie Johnson Wells

Hollie Johnson Wells age 38, of Roanoke Rapids, NC passed away Saturday, March 21, 2015 at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, NC.

Hollie was born September 3, 1976.  

She graduated from Campbell College with a degree in Pharmaceutical Science. She worked for Sandoz in Wilson, NC and worked at Halifax Community College as a Continuing Education Instructor.

She is survived by her husband, Michael Wells. Her children, Fenton and Mikaylie Wells.  Her parents Woodie and Sandra Johnson. Her brother Chris Johnson. Her mother-in-law and father-in-law, Regina Price and Forrest Price. Her grandmothers, Dorothy Felton Lovegrove, Katherine Price and Lillian Pearson. Her brother-in-law, Jeffrey Wells and his wife Blair and her sister-in-laws, Kendall Wier and her husband Justin and Julia Lanier.  A very special niece, Lauren Kate Johnson and nieces and nephews, Kylie, Camren and Jesse Wells and Emma and Ella Lanier. 

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 25, 2015 at 2:00 PM at Galatia Baptist Church with Rev. David Foster officiating.  Burial will follow at Milwaukee Cemetery in Milwaukee. 

The family will receive friends Tuesday, March 24, 2015 from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Massey Funeral Home, 839 Jackson Street, Roanoke Rapids, NC.

Carmen Rose Davis age 59, of Conway, NC passed away Monday, March 23, 2015 at Vidant Roanoke-Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie, NC.

Rose was born November 27, 1955 in Hertford County, NC, the daughter of the late Willie Vaughan and Cora Lawrence Vaughan.

Survivors include her husband Kenneth Davis.  Her children, Jody Lynn Davis and Melanie Ann Davis Burke and her husband Jerry.  Her grandchild, Zoe Burke.  Her brothers and sisters, Monty Brickhouse and his wife Patricia, Glenn Brickhouse, Allen Brickhouse, Bill Vaughan and his wife Betsy, Sue Cofield and her husband Kirwan and Jean Martin.

A Memorial Service will be held Thursday, March 26, 2015 at 7:00 PM at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson with Harold L. Massey officiating. 

The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the funeral home.

Memorial Contributions may be made to the Conway-Severn Rescue Squad.

Emily Clements Seibel

Emily Clements Seibel of Roanoke Rapids passed away Tuesday, March 24, 2015, at Signature Health Care.  

Emily was ten days shy of her 92nd birthday.  

Emily and her husband moved to Roanoke Rapids from Glen Burnie, MD in 1980.  

Emily retired from Social Security after 36 years of service.  

She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul J. Seibel; mother, Bessie Jones Clements; sisters, Edith Paul and Marian Johnson; brothers, Hubert Clements and Drewry Clements, and three special nieces, Jacqualine Ann Johnson, Rae J. Pepper and Dean Paul Campbell.

She is survived by four nieces, Linda Hockaday of Roanoke Rapids, Jean W. Johnson of Omaha, NE, Faye Paul Turner and husband, Albert, of Forest, VA and Suzanne Seibel Stover of Green Cove Springs, FL; two nephews, Jerry W. Johnson of Louisville, KY and Carter Seibel of Delta, PA.  Emily is also survived by several wonderful friends and neighbors, Judy and Ed Mabrey, Alvin Davis and Barbara Wall.  She will be greatly missed by all of her family and friends.  

The family would also like to thank the staff of the 5th floor of Halifax Regional Medical Center and the staff of Signature Health Care for the care and concern shown to Emily.

Arrangements are being handled by Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service where a visitation will be held Saturday, March 28, 2015 from 12-1:30 pm. A memorial graveside service will follow at 2:00 pm at Cedarwood Cemetery by Rev. Sue Owens.

Friends may also visit at other times at the home.

Eva Allen Love

Eva Allen Love, 79, of Pinecrest Avenue passed away Thursday, March 26, 2015 at Halifax Regional Medical Center.

Eva was born November 27, 1935 in Halifax County to the late Walter and Bertha Allen.  She was also preceded in death by her husband:  J.W. Love; and her sister: Ruby Cobb.

She was a charter member of Gum Chapel Pentecostal Holiness Church (now Harvest Temple), a member of the Women’s Ministries.  Eva also worked for Halifax County Schools for 28 years.

Eva is survived by her son: Jay Love and special friend Sharon; her daughter: Wanda Matthews and her husband Robert; her sisters: Penny White and her husband Wayne, Pie Mabrey and her husband Ray; her brother-in-law: Joe Cobb; her grandchildren: Christie Keeter and her husband Robbie, Renee Pearce and her husband Scott, Nicole Rooker and her husband Bryan, Robie Matthews, Christina Sparks and her husband Josh, Merri Love and Lacey Mooney and husband Marc; her great grandchildren: Amber Keeter, Cailey Rooker, Chad Keeter, Alease Love, Caleb Mooney, Elijah Moriarty, Ben Keeter, Isaiah Moriarty, Tyler Pearce, Taylor Mooney, Katelyn Pearce, Jackson Sparks, Abigayle Sparks and Lucas Mooney; her great great grandchild: Brenden Keeter; many special nieces, nephews and friends.    

Funeral services will be held 2:00 P.M. Monday, March 30, 2015 at Harvest Temple Pentecostal Holiness Church with Rev. Norwood Starling, Rev. Randy Martin, and Rev. Fred Jones officiating.  Burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 7:00 – 9:00 P.M. Sunday, March 29, 2015 at Harvest Temple and other times at the home of her daughter, Wanda, 1883 Hwy 48, Roanoke Rapids.

The family would like to give special thanks to the excellent care provided by Dr. Maradiaga, Dr. Ojie, Halifax Regional Medical Center and Liberty Commons Rehab Staff.  They would also like to thank Rev. and Mrs. Starling and members of Harvest Temple for all their love and support, you held a special place in her heart.

Lucius Rives Taylor Jr.

Lucius Rives Taylor Jr.

Lucius Rives Taylor, Jr., 81, of Weldon, passed away on Thursday, March 26, 2015 at Rex Hospital in Raleigh.

He was born on December 18, 1933 in Emporia, Virginia to Lucius Rives Taylor and Elizabeth Jordan Taylor and grew up in Jackson, North Carolina.

Rives graduated from North Carolina State University with a degree in Forestry.

He served his country during the Korean War in the US Navy.  

Afterwards, he spent many years in the peanut business and enjoyed his time traveling the back roads of Eastern North Carolina, where he made many friends along the way.

He was an avid outdoorsman, who enjoyed fishing with his son, Russ, and practiced wood carving whenever he had the chance.  

He was a committed member of Weldon United Methodist Church throughout his adult life.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Mary Royall Joyner Taylor; his daughter Wes Taylor Ragland and husband, Trent, III of Raleigh; his son, Russell Rives Taylor, of Garysburg;  his sister, Mary Elizabeth Outland and husband, Jimmy of Rich Square; two grandchildren include William Trent Ragland IV and Mary Suiter Ragland; and several nieces and nephews.

Heartfelt thanks are extended to the Rex Hospital Fourth Floor nurses who went above and beyond and showed great compassion as they cared for Mr. Taylor and his family.

Graveside services will be held at 1:00 PM on Tuesday, March 31, 2015 at Garysburg United Methodist Church Cemetery, 303 Old Highway Road, Garysburg, NC with the Rev. Sue Owens officiating.

Mrs. Junie Maddrey Massey Barnes age 85, of Pleasant Hill, NC passed away Friday, March 27, 2015.

Mrs. Barnes was born January 10, 1930, the daughter of the late

Rufus Maddrey and Lizzie Pearl Futrell Maddrey.  She was also predeceased by her first husband, James R. Massey Sr., her daughter, Cathy Massey and her second husband Lester Barnes, her brothers and sisters, Huel Maddrey, Lloyd Maddrey, Pearl Gilliam, Calvin Maddrey and Lawrence Maddrey.   She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church and a member of the church choir. 

She is survived by her children, James R. Massey Jr. and his wife Janet, Debby M. Babb and her husband Conrad and Wayne M. Massey.

Her grandchildren, Heather Rose and her husband Edwin, Kim Babb, Jennifer Williams and husband David and Julie Muskalla and husband Nick.

Her great grandchildren, Chelsea and Cole Rose, Drew, Emily and Sarah Williams and Matthew Muskalla. Her two sisters, Dorcas Evelyn Bennett and Helen M. Harris.  Also several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Monday, March 30, 3015 at 3:00 PM at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson with Rev. Jim Cox officiating.  

Burial will follow at Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home on Monday beginning at 2:00 PM prior to the services.

Memorial contributions may be made to Bethel Baptist Church.

Billy Ray Carter

Billy Ray Carter 84, of Roanoke Rapids, died Friday March 27, 2015.

Billy a native of Edgecombe County was the son of the late Willie Robert and Bessie Gray Edmondson Carter.                                                                                       

He was a veteran of the United States Army serving during the Korean conflict. He was member of AMVETS post 38, a Mason, and a member of First Pentecostal Holiness church in Roanoke Rapids. Billy was the owner of Sunoco gas station on the corner of 10th and Marshall Street for many years. An outdoorsman Billy loved to hunt and fish.

He is survived by his wife Christine Organ Carter, stepson Greg Liles and his wife Kay Lawrence of Littleton, grand children Lori Anne Liles Cain of Lewiston and Lynley Faith Liles of Littleton.

Funeral Services will be held Tuesday March 31, 2015 at 3 P.M. at the First Pentecostal Holiness Church in Roanoke Rapids with Rev. D.A. Leonard officiating.

Burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids with Military honors.

The family will receive friends Monday from 6-7:30 P.M. at Askew Funeral and Cremation Services.

 

David Dobbins

David Dobbins, 88, of Roanoke Rapids passed away on Sunday, March 29, 2015 at Wake Medical Center.  

He was son of the late Horace Elliott and Helen Allsbrook Dobbins.

 He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Becky Grant Dobbins and his second wife, Frankie Williams Dobbins; his brothers, Haskall Dobbins, Doyle Dobbins, Gordon Dobbins, Dwight Dobbins, and Keith Dobbins.

David was in the US Army from 1944-1946 and served in the South Pacific.  He was a lifetime member of VFW Post 3702.  For many years he was an active member of Myrick Hills Country Club. He was a member of Rosemary Baptist Church and was a retired supervisor from J.P. Stevens.

He is survived by his step children, Adrianne W. Mullis, Ray R. Williams, Daniel G. Williams, and Leigh W. Allman; special sister in law, Harriett M. Dobbins; nieces, Laurie D. Miller and Amy D. Sutton; and his cousin, Marcia Allsbrook Royal.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, April 1, 2015 from 5:30 to 7:00 at Askew Funeral and Cremation Services.
