Donald O'Neal 'Boodley' Hart

Donald O’Neal “Boodley” Hart, 75, flew home with the angels on February 12, 2015.

He was born October 27, 1939 to the late Herbert Russell Hart and Annie Maude White Hart of Emporia Va.  

He loved music of all kinds but especially blues and rock.  He also loved to fly airplanes with his brother Sherman Hart.  

“Boodley” was loved by many and loved many unconditionally; he is and will be missed and remembered forever.

 In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his brothers Sherman Hart of Virginia Beach, Va.; H. Russell Hart, Jr. of Richmond, Va.; sisters Hazel Ramsey of Ashland, Va.; Shirley Norwood of Emporia, Va.; Nancy Hart of Georgia; and Jean H. Hammond of Roanoke Rapids, NC.  

“Boodley” resided at 111 Gardner Dr. in Roanoke Rapids with his niece Barbara Pearson and husband Benny.  

He was a beloved uncle, great uncle and great-great uncle to many.  He was closest to his great niece Andrea Pearson and her children Alijah Hamilton and Nolyn Pearson; his great nephew Marcus Pearson and wife Misty and their children Dustin, Morgan, and Jordon.  

He loved his family to no end.  

A memorial service will be held Sunday, February 15, 2015 at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service at 2:00 PM.

 In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Donald Hart memorial fund c/o Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service 507 Hwy. 158 West Roanoke Rapids, NC 27870.

Vergie King Barnes, 91, died Tuesday, February 10, 2015, at Hampton Manor in Gaston.

Mrs. Barnes was born June 10, 1923 in Ebony, VA to the late Thomas G. Jones and Sally Laura Rooker Jones.  She was a member of the Church of God in Roanoke Rapids.  She loved cooking and loved her family and friends.  In addition to her parents, Mrs. Barnes was preceded in death by husbands, Acie Barnes, Thomas King and Clifton T. Barnes; sister, Ada Burton and brothers, Macon Jones, Ladd Jones and Plum Jones.

Surviving are her sister Bernice Taylor of Ebony, VA; brothers, Herman Jones of LaCrosse, VA and Johnnie Jones; step-daughter, Mary Lou Barnes of Roanoke Rapids; step-grandson, Timothy Travelstead and step-granddaughter, Tammy Massengale.  Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephew.

The family will receive friends at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service, who is handling arrangements, Friday, February 13, 2015, from 7-8:30 pm.  Graveside services will be held at Lake Gaston Christian Life Center Cemetery (Ebony Assembly of God), 1411 Robinson Ferry Rd, Ebony, VA 23845, Saturday, February 14, 2015, at 2:00 pm.

In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested memorial contributions be made to the Vergie King Barnes Memorial, 2035 Tillman Rd., LaCrosse, VA, 23950.

Frances Hasty Woodard Warrington

Mrs. Frances Hasty Woodard Warrington age 71, of Margarettsville, NC passed away Monday, February 16, 2015.

Frances was born December 17, 1943 in Northampton County, NC, the daughter of the late Floyd C. Hasty and Leasie Davis Hasty.  She was also predeceased by a sister, Carolyn Hasty.

Frances was a faithful lifetime member of Margarettsville Baptist Church where at one time she served as church treasurer.   She retired from the Northampton County Board of Education.

She is survived by her daughters, Mae Woodard Rose and her husband Mike of Murfreesboro, NC and Leneau Woodard Pope and her husband Chuck of Seaboard, NC. Her son Raymond Robert Woodard of Arizona and his friend Greg Eaton. Her granddaughter Ciara Taylor Pope. Her brothers and sisters, Virginia Peede, Floyd Hasty Jr., C.T. Hasty, Marshall Hasty and Rose Nally.  Also a special friend Austin Paul.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 21, 2015 at 3:00 Pm at Margarettsville Baptist Church with Rev. Larry Cribb and Rev. Jim Cox officiating.  Burial will follow at the Woodard Family Cemetery in Margarettsville. 

The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson, NC, Friday, February 20, 2015 from 6:00 until 8:00 PM and other times at the home.

Nell Boone Duke

Mrs. Nell Boone Duke age 92 of Jackson, NC died Sunday, February 15, 2015 at Liberty Commons Nursing Home in Weldon, NC.

Mrs. Duke was born September 30, 1922 in Northampton County, NC, the daughter of the late John Edward Boone and Lizzy Hasty Boone.

She was also predeceased by her husband James Richard “J.R.” Duke and a sister, Mary Boone Lanier Davis.

She was an active member of Jackson Baptist Church where she had served in many offices.  She and her husband owned and operated Nell’s Department Store in Jackson for many years and she work also at Massey Funeral Home.

She is survived by her daughter, Nell Dean Williams and her husband Kenneth.  Her son James Richard “Jimmy” Duke.  Her grandchildren, Kenny Williams and Bernadette Nicol Duke.  Also her sister, Derother Tromans.  

Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 21, 2015 at 2:00 PM at Jackson Baptist Church with Rev. Warren Heitzenrater officiating. Burial will follow at Jackson Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Jackson Baptist Church, Saturday beginning at 12:30 PM until service time.

Verona 'Pat' Draper

Vernona (Pat) Draper, age 90, of Weldon, passed away on Wednesday, February 18, 2015.  

She was the daughter of the late Jesse Robert and Lillian Mooney Rhue.  She was also preceded in death by her husband of 33 years, Wesley B. Draper and her brother, J.R. Rhue.

Pat and her husband were long time members of Weldon United Methodist Church.  She retired from Roanoke Rapids High School where she taught Business Administration for many years.  Pat was also known for her beautiful flower arrangements, gardening, and was very proud of her yard.  

She is survived by her daughter, Patricia Bonelli and her husband, Paul of Roanoke, VA; her sister, Helen Lee Williams and her husband, Roland of Fayetteville, NC; her grandson, Wesley Paul Bonelli of Roanoke, VA; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 20, 2015 at 2:00 PM in the chapel of Askew Funeral and Cremation Services in Roanoke Rapids with Rev. Sue Owens officiating. Interment will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery in Weldon.

The family will receive friends on Friday, February 20, 2015 from 1:00 PM until service time at Askew Funeral and Cremation Services.

Joe John Scott, Jr. age 80 passed away February 18, 2015 at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, NC.

Joe was born January 13, 1935 in Bertie County North Carolina the son of the late Joe John Scott, Sr. and Clemmon Ann Scott. He was also preceded in death by his wife Betty Lou Harrell his sisters Barbara Ann Scott, Cindy Scott and Lillie Mae Morris, his brothers Vernon Scott and Jordan Scott.

Left to cherish his memory are his three daughters, Emma Theodorakis and her husband Jimmy of Aulander, NC, Jo Ann Lee and her husband Leslie of Aulander, NC and Cathy Outlaw and her husband Scott of Aulander, NC; His two sons, Jonathan Scott and wife Pam of Roxobel, NC and Randy Scott and Fiance Wanda of Aulander, NC/ Greenville, NC; His two sisters Dora Dee Leicester of Waverly, VA and Annie Powell of Eure, NC; His three brothers Jim Scott of Jackson, NC, Clyde Scott of Lewiston, NC and George Scott of Kitty Hawk, NC; His life long friend Jean Copeland of Williamston, NC; His ten grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, February 22, 2015 at 2:00 PM at Massey Funeral Home in Aulander, NC. Burial will follow in Hall-Rogerson Cemetery in Aulander, NC.

Josephine 'Jo' Draper Story

Josephine “Jo” Draper Story of Lake Gaston, formerly a lifelong resident of Roanoke Rapids passed away Saturday February 21, 2015. 

She was the daughter of the late Lloyd and Susie Draper. She was also preceded in death by her husband W.T. “Bill Story and her brother Gilbert Draper.

Jo worked for the city of Roanoke Rapids for over 30 years and was the senior citizens director. Her dedication to the seniors of Roanoke Rapids and around the entire State earned her the respect of everyone. The Jo Story Senior Citizens building was dedicated to her for all of the many accomplishments that she achieved for senior citizens in the area.

She is survived by her daughter Terry Webb and her husband Larry of Nags Head; her sons Tommy Story and his wife, Beth of Lake Gaston, Tim Story and his wife, Barbara of Roanoke Rapids and Todd Story of Nags Head. Grandchildren, Tracy Story and his wife, Liz, Stephanie Pericak, Renee Vester and her husband David, Hunter Story, Arianna Story; great grand children , Justin Warren, Tyler Warren, Maggie Vester and  Elizabeth Grace Pericak.  Several nieces, nephews, and many wonderful friends.

Memorial services will be held Sunday February 22, 2015 at 2:00 P.M. in the chapel of Askew Funeral and Cremation services in Roanoke Rapids with Rev. Randy Martin officiating.

In lieu of flowers memorial donation’s may be made to the Jo Story senior citizens.

Danny Keith Martin

Danny Keith Martin age 57 of Pendleton, NC died Sunday, February 22, 2015 at his home.

Danny was born May 4, 1957, the son of the late Alma Coy Martin and Joanne Thomas Martin.  He was also predeceased by his sister, Evelyn Sue Vinson.

Danny graduated from Northeast Academy and owned his own trucking company for many years.

He is survived by Libby Mooring and many friends.

Graveside services will be held Wednesday, February 25, 2015 at 2:00 PM at Severn Cemetery in Severn, NC.

Memorial contributions may be made to Conway Volunteer Fire Department or to Conway-Severn Rescue Squad.

Arrangements are being handled by Massey Funeral Home in Jackson, NC.

John Charles Stockley, age 88 passed away February 17, 2015.

John was born May 18, 1926 in Michigan.

He was a retired veteran of the United States Navy and a police officer for thirteen years following his military service to our country.

Survivors include his son Adam Bennett Stockley of Portland, Maine.

A private service with military honors will be held at a later date.

Stanley Willie Vaughan (77) passed away on Sunday, February 22, surrounded by family and friends.

Stanley was born April 21, 1937 in Potecasi to W.F. and Della Colston Vaughan.

Stanley was a deacon and Sunday school teacher at Creeksville Baptist Church where he was affectionately known as “The Candy Man” by all the children.

He was President of Farmer’s Mutual Insurance (now Alliance Mutual Ins.) of Rich Square for over 30 years.

He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Peggy Babb Vaughan; son, Stanley Keith Vaughan and wife Edna of Knoxville, TN; daughter, Brenda Vaughan Jernigan and husband David of Fayetteville, NC; grandchildren Danielle Vaughan, Dustin Vaughan and wife Emily, Matthew Jernigan, Steven Jernigan and Riley Jernigan; great-grandson Hudson Keith Vaughan; several nieces and nephews and many wonderful friends.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, Feb. 24 from 6:30-8:00 PM at Massey Funeral Home, Jackson.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Feb. 25 at 11 AM at Creeksville Baptist Church with Rev. Andy Sloan and Rev. Johnny Richards officiating.

Grady Wilson 'Buddy' Keeter Sr.

Grady Wilson “Buddy” Keeter, Sr., 88 of Roanoke Rapids died Monday, February 23, 2015 at Signature Healthcare in Roanoke Rapids.

Mr. Keeter was born July 7, 1926 to the late Lonnie Joe Keeter, Sr. and Fannie Haislip Keeter.  He was also preceded in death by his wife: Shirley Barfield Keeter; his sisters: Margaret Keeter, Lucy Barkley, Edith Rook; his brothers: Lonnie Joe Keeter, Jr., Robert Keeter; his special friend Catherine Dickens.

He was a member of Maranatha Baptist Church, U. S. Navy veteran of World War II, Amvets Post 320, Shaw-May American Legion Posts 38, Progressive Senior Citizens and Roanoke Rapids Singles Club.

Mr. Keeter is survived by his son: Grady Keeter, Jr of Roanoke Rapids; his brother: Cleveland Keeter and his wife Barbara of Roanoke Rapids; his sisters:  Frances Crawford and Gladys Wells of Roanoke Rapids, Genevieve Eason of Glouster Point, VA; his sister –in-law: Dorothy “Dot” Keeter of Newport News, VA;a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 P.M. Thursday, February 26, 2015 at Maranatha Baptist Church with Rev. Mike Little officiating. Burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7:00 – 8:30 P.M.  Wednesday, February 25, 2015 at Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Service and other times at the home of his sister, Frances Crawford.

Michael Anthony Barrett

Michael Anthony Barnett, 51, passed away, Saturday, February 21, 2015.  

Michael was born February 25, 1963 in Halifax County to William Cecil and Jo Anne Carver Barnett.  

Michael was a fine man, who was very outgoing.  

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and cooking.

Michael was also very loving and caring.  

He is preceded in death by his grandparents D.A. and Pauline Green Barnett; and William E. and Beulah Ethel Carver; and a number of aunts and uncles.  

In addition to his parents, Michael is survived by his brother William Cecil Barnett, Jr. and wife Shanda of Raleigh; and his sister Barbara Jo Barnett Hough and husband Woody of Pinehurst.  He is also survived by 3 nephews; 1 niece; and a number of friends.  

A memorial service will be held Thursday, February 26, 2015 at 6:00 PM at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service with Rev. Michael Little officiating.

Fred Frank Swetley age 81 of Aulander, NC passed away February 24, 2015 at Vidant Roanoke-Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie, NC.

Fred was born June 6, 1933 in Bertie County North Carolina, the son of the late Frank Swetley and Lucille Hall Swetley.

Mr. Swetley was a talented carpenter working most of his life as a carpenter constructing many things from houses, decks, porches to fixing anything people requested of him.

Left to cherish his memory are his sister Evelyn Harrell of Ahoskie, NC; His four nieces Rachel Warren and her husband Ben of Murfreesboro, NC, Sheryl Harrell and husband Ashley of Colerain, NC, Anne Long and husband Mike of Eure, NC and Sue Hewitt of Ahoskie, NC; His two nephews Alan Harrell and his wife Frances of Ahoskie, NC and Kenny Harrell and his wife Michelle of Ahoskie, NC;  Also several great nieces and one great nephew.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 28, 2015 at 11:00 AM in the Chapel of Massey Funeral Home in Aulander, NC with Rev. Jim Cox officiating. Burial will follow in Hall-Rogerson Cemetery in Aulander, NC.

The family will receive friends prior to the service from 10:00 AM until time of service.

Patsy Spence Doisey

Patsy Spence Doisey, age 52 of Roanoke Rapids, NC passed away February 23, 2015 at VCU Medical Center in Richmond, VA.

Patsy was born November 20, 1962 in Halifax County North Carolina the daughter of the late Calvin Spence and Nancy Lee Brown Spence. She was also preceded in death by her grandchild Cameron D. Newsome.

Patsy loved to spoil her grandchildren. She really enjoyed being around her grandchildren they were truly the light in her eyes. She also loved camping, going to the beach and watching her “soaps.”

Left to cherish her memory are her two daughters Holly Doisey of Roanoke Rapids and Joyce Newsome and her husband Rodney of Dinwiddie, VA. Her brother Donnie Spence and his wife Glenda. Her six grandchildren Christian Doisey, Jordan, Jason, Kayla and Miranda Hernandez and Richard Spence.

Funeral services will be held Monday, March 2, 2015 at 1:00 PM in the Chapel of Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids, NC due to the inclement weather with Rev. Donald Faucette officiating. Burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids, NC.

The family will receive friends prior to the service from 11:00 am until time of service.

Stephen Lester Strickland, 61, of Roanoke Rapids died Thursday, February 26, 2015 at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville.  

Steve was born June 16, 1953 in Halifax County to the late Lester and Eleanor Sullivan Strickland.  

Steve played football at NC State. Steve attended Roanoke Rapids High School and was a star football player. He was recruited by and played football at NC State.

Steve was a loving husband and a great friend and mentor to many.

He loved helping people and tried to make them feel happy. He always had a joke to tell.

Steve helped establish the Roanoke Valley Adult Day Center in Weldon and served on the Board of Directors.

Steve’s passion was fishing and he loved the outdoors.

Steve is survived by his wife Donna Bruce Strickland of Roanoke Rapids; his step-children Dodi Tolbert of Little River, MD; Tracy Olesnevich of Roanoke Rapids; Conner Bruce and Duncan Bruce both of Durham, NC; his brother Gary Strickland of FL; and his sister Susan Strickland Rose of Clayton, NC.  He is also survived by his nieces Jennifer Finnegan; Ashley Kirk; and Samantha Finnegan.

 A memorial service celebrating his life will be held Tuesday, March 3, 2015 at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service at 6:00 PM.

The family is recieving guests at the home. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Roanoke Valley Adult Day Center 108 East 1stSt. Weldon, NC 27890.

Stanley Mason Johnson Sr.

Stanley Mason Johnson, Sr., 87, of Littleton, NC passed away Wednesday, February 25, 2015 at Stratford Assisted Living in Chapel Hill.

Mr. Johnson was born April 25, 1927 in Halifax County to the late Joseph E. Johnson and Lillie Vaughan Johnson.

He was also preceded in death by his brothers: James E. Johnson, Amos Johnson, Julian Johnson and Roger Johnson; his sister: Elsie Tudor.

He was a member of Lakeview Park Baptist Church and he worked with all types of string instruments.  He loved bluegrass and country music.

He is survived by his wife Peggy Jean Liles Johnson; his son: Stanley Mason Johnson, Jr.; his daughter Peggy Jo Johnson Stowe; his sister Barbara Andrews; his grandchildren: Shelley Stowe Platz and her husband Shane, Anne Lynne Johnson Whitby and her husband Jason, Joseph Liles Johnson, Christopher Taylor Johnson and Alicia Hurst; her great grandchildren: Hailey Marie Whitby, Breanna Jade Whitby and Jessica Rayne Whitby.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Tuesday at Cedarwood Cemetery with Rev. Randy Martin officiating.

Edmun Lewis Jenkins

Edmun Lewis Jenkins, 81, of Roanoke Rapids, passed away Friday February 27, 2015 at his home surrounded by his family.  

Mr. Jenkins was born December 16, 1933 in Halifax County to the late Charlie and Eva Allen Jenkins.  

He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.  

Mr. Jenkins proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War.  He loved tinkering with his tractors, loved farming and raising cattle and horses. 

In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his brothers Cronval Jenkins; and Troy “Buddy” Jenkins; and a sister Seretha Bullock.

Mr. Jenkins is survived by his wife of 62 years Gladys Jenkins; his daughters Gail Exum and husband Richard of Lake Gaston; Wendy Milburn and husband Chuck of Hanna City, IL; and Pam Clapton and husband Mike of Littleton; his grandchildren Christy King; Jeremy Jordan; Kelly Myers; Justin Exum; Kevin Ogburn; and Christopher Clapton.  He is also survived by 11 great-grandchildren; his sister Fannie Reynolds of Roanoke Rapids; and his special sisters-in-law Teenie Jenkins and Dot Jenkins; and a devoted special friend, Pastor Rick Rogers. 

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 4, 2015 at 2:00 PM at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service with Rev. Rick Rogers officiating. Burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery.  The family will receive friends Tuesday, March 3, 2015 from 7:00 to 8:30 PM at the funeral home and all other times at the home of his daughter Pam Clapton, 473 Jack Brown Rd. Littleton, NC.

Walter Floyd Futrell Jr.

Mr. Walter Floyd Futrell Jr. age 74, of Jackson, NC died Monday, March 2, 2015 at his home.

Mr. Futrell was born January 5, 1941 in Halifax County, NC, the son of the late Walter Floyd Futrell Sr. and Neta Hargrove Futrell.

He worked for many years as manager of the ABC Store in Rich Square, worked for Carolina Aluminum, Davis and Company  in Conway and at the Piggly Wiggly. He was a member of Rehoboth United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife Brenda Williams Futrell of the home and a brother, Charles Futrell of Wendell, NC.

A Memorial Service will be held Friday, March 6, 2015 at  2:00 PM  at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson, NC.

The family will receive friends after the service at the funeral home.

Mr. Jones was born in Halifax County, November 20, 1946, to the late James Roy Jones, Sr. and Mary Silverstein Jones.

 He loved his family, especially spoiling the children and grandchildren and his dog, Charley.

 He also had a love for the outdoors and fishing.  He loved his church, where he was a member at Quankie Baptist.

Surviving is his wife of 48 years, Faye S. Jones of the home; son, Jody Jones and wife, Jenny; daughter, Angie Barmer and husband, Jason, all of Roanoke Rapids; brothers, Robin Jones and wife, Cindy, of Texas and Roy Jones and wife, Deborah, of Roanoke Rapids; sister, Diane Gravitt and husband, Bill, of Hampton Roads, VA; seven grandchildren, Kevin Jones, Kimberly Dukes, Hunter Jones, Taylor Jones, Bailey Barmer, Emma Barmer and Gavin Jones.  Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Saturday, March 7, 2015, at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service from 6-8 pm.  Pastors Billy Hardwick and Ray McDonald will conduct a funeral service at Quankie Baptist Church Sunday, March 8, 2015 at 2:00 pm.  Interment will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery.
