Nicholas 'Nick' Ryan Edwards

Nicholas “Nick” Ryan Edwards, 20, died Saturday, April 14, 2018.

Nick was born in Halifax County to Brian Keith and Melissa Yarboro Edwards.

He was a graduate of Roanoke Rapids High School, Class of 2015, and loved playing Frisbee Golf.

In addition to his mother, Nick was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Debbie Thorne and paternal grandfather, Ray Edwards.

Surviving are his father, Brian K. Edwards and Amy Nowell; sister, Emli Elizabeth Edwards; brother, Dustin Mark Mountford, all of Roanoke Rapids; paternal grandmother, Betty Lou Edwards of Roanoke Rapids; maternal grandfather, Willie Yarboro and wife Pat, of Littleton; uncle, Chip Edwards and Debbie Smith, of Zebulon, NC and uncle, Willie Yarboro, Jr.

Reverends Layne Wallace and Randy Martin will conduct funeral services Tuesday, April 17, 2018, at 2:00 pm at Rosemary Baptist Church where the family will also receive friends in the fellowship hall prior to services from 12:30pm to 1:45pm.

Interment will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery.

Betty Clarke Harris

Betty Clarke Harris, 60, of Bath, NC, died Saturday, April 14, 2018 at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, NC.

Betty was born in Richmond, VA., the daughter of the late W. Lawrence Clarke and Evelyn Weaver Clarke. 

She graduated from Furrman College in Rocky Mount, Va., then graduated from the Nursing Program at Wilson Community College.

She obtained her Bachelors of Science Degree in Nursing, and her Master of Science in Nursing from East Carolina University. 

Her Nursing career included serving as a Flight Nurse for East Care; working in different departments at Vidant and was currently a Nurse Education Specialist in the East Carolina Heart Institute.

Betty loved the ocean, sand, and fishing. Most of her spare time was spent at the coast casting her fishing rod and taking in God’s beautiful creation. 

Surviving are: a brother, Edward Lawrence Clarke and his wife, Janet Tindall Clarke, of Roanoke Rapids, NC; a niece, Nicole Clarke Luck and her husband, John Michael Luck of Houston, TX. Also, two great nephews; Colin Clarke Luck and Noah Graeme Luck of Houston, TX, and all of her nursing family at Vidant.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 28, at 4:00 pm in the Inter-Faith Chapel at Vidant Medical Center, Greenville, NC. with Rev. Jane Rose officiating.

Major Richard Bly Williams

Major Richard Bly Williams, USAF, Retired, 74, of Pleasant Hill died Wednesday, April 18, 2018 in his residence.

Maj. Williams was born March 3, 1944 in Pulaski Co., Arkansas, the son of Jimmy Carl Williams, Sr and Emily Ragland Williams.  

He received a Masters Degree in Industrial Engineering from Oklahoma State and a Masters Degree in Computer Science from American University.   

He played, and taught, chess and won the base championship while stationed at Lackland AFB.  

While at Lackland, he also played on the championship winning football team there.  Maj. Williams was an avid runner, and enjoyed playing both golf and baseball. He worked for a while with the FBI in Washington, DC; and also served professorships at Arkansas Tech University, UALR and Arkansas State University.  

Survivors include his wife, Patricia Conwell Williams; sons, Richard James Williams of Grady, AR, Michael Wayne Williams of Russellville, AR; grandchildren, James David Williams of Van Beuren, AR, Alexis Ann Williams of N Little Rock, AR; great-granddaughter, Littie Danielle Williams; his brother, Jimmy Carl Williams, Jr of CA; nephew, Jimmy Carl Williams, III of AR; and an aunt, Josephine Rowan, of Little Rock, AR.

Maj. Williams requested to be cremated and a memorial service to be held at a later date.

Jerry Bradley Hux

Jerry Bradley Hux 57, of Roanoke Rapids, died Friday April 20, 2018.

Jerry, a native of Halifax County, was the son of the late William Bradley “W.B.” and Rachel Keeter Hux.

He graduated from Roanoke Rapids class of 1980.

He worked most of his life with the family business of Rufus B. Hux and Son General Contractors.

He was a life-long member of the Roanoke Valley Rescue squad. He was also involved with several fire and rescue departments in Halifax and Northampton Counties.

Jerry is survived by his sister, Robin Hux Isles and her husband, David, of Roanoke Rapids, his nephews, Jordan, Sammy and Matt Isles all of Roanoke Rapids; his uncles, Ronald Luke Keeter and his wife, Mary of Aurelian Springs and Tommy Keeter and his wife, Polly of Gasburg, Va., his aunts, Katherine K. Lee and her husband, Glen and Linda K. Wrenn both of Roanoke Rapids, Joan Webster and her husband Alvis of Graham; several cousins, good friends, Wesley Porch of Roanoke Rapids, Paul Nowell of Weldon and his loving family at Signature Healthcare in Roanoke Rapids.

Funeral Services will be held Tuesday April 24, 2018, at 2 P.M. at South Rosemary Baptist Church with Rev. Dennis Joyner and Rev. Barry Gardner officiating.

Interment will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids.

The family will receive friends Monday from 7-8:30 at Askew Funeral and Cremation Services, 731 Roanoke Ave Roanoke Rapids.

In lieu of flowers the family has ask that donations be made to a local volunteer fire or rescue organization of your choice in honor of Jerry.

Anna Tsambounieris, 93, of Karpathos, Greece, residing in Oxford, NC, passed away on Sunday, April 22, 2018.

Born in Greece to the late Ioannis Dimarhos and Argyroula Matsangos-Dimarhos, Anna was preceded in death by her loving husband, Giorgos Ioannis Tsambounieris.

Anna is survived by her three beloved daughters: Maria Frangos and husband Vasilios of Roanoke Rapids, NC; Argyroula Piperis and her husband Vasilios of Oxford, NC; and Rigopoula Talarantas and husband Minas of Corpus Christi, TX; her three sons: Ioannis Tsambounieris and wife, Hatzinoula of Roxboro, NC; Elias Tsambounieris and wife, Maria of Boiling Springs, NC; and Michael Tsambounieris and wife, Anastasia of High Point, NC; her thirteen grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

The family will be gathering in loving memory of their mother for a viewing at Askew Funeral & Cremation Services 731 Roanoke Ave, Roanoke Rapids, NC on Saturday, April 28, 2018 from 12:30 to 2:00 P.M.

Anna will then be returning to her native home in Spoa, Karpathos for burial.

Reverend Arnold Gordon Cooper

Reverend Arnold Gordon Cooper went to be with Lord Jesus on Sunday, April 22, 2018, at 6:35 p.m., after a parting kiss from his beloved bride Bessie Mae Newsome Cooper.

At the time of his passing, he was residing in Boonsboro, Maryland.  

He had spent his last two months under the gracious care of the Veterans Hospice facility in Martinsburg, West Virginia, until he succumbed to natural causes on the 22nd.

He was born on April 4, 1931, to William (Jack) Thaniel Cooper and Reva Mae Cooper Starke. He was known to his childhood friends as Possum.

He was their second child and is survived by his siblings, Mary Lee Hobbs and Norman Payne Cooper.  

He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Dorothy Mae Ushery, and his eldest brother, Roy Thaniel Cooper.

He married the love of his life, Bessie Mae Newsome Cooper on July 3, 1954, in Emporia, Virginia, and remained his faithful companion until his death.

He served his country in the U.S. Army from February 6, 1951 through February 5, 1954, including the time he spent on the front lines during the Korean War as a machine gun operator. He was part of the 7th Calvary. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, Korean Service Medal (4 bronze stars), Army Occupation Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, United Nations Service Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal.

He was a fine, self-taught musician and sang tenor.

He felt the calling of God on his life to become a preacher and attended Tennessee Temple from 1969 - 1972. He pastored People's Baptist Church in Frederick, Maryland, for 16 years, Nimitz Missionary Baptist Church in Nimitz, West Virginia, for 7 years and Lakeview Park Baptist Church in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, for 15 years until his retirement in 2010.

He and Bessie moved to Martinsburg to be near their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He continued to preach in his retirement until his health would no longer permit it.

He is survived by his wife, Bessie Mae Newsome Cooper, his daughters Janis Flickinger, Margie Stemple, Sandra Crumpton, Rebecca Hatch and his son, Arnold G. Cooper, Jr. along with their spouses, 13 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren with one on the way.

He spent his life serving the Lord and serving others. He was a rare treasure and beloved by all who knew him.

The service to celebrate Reverend Cooper's life will be held at 11 o'clock Saturday morning, April 28, 2018 at Victory Baptist Church, 2360 Bolling Road, Roanoke Rapids, NC.  

Interment will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 - 8:00 pm Friday at Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Service, 507 US Hwy 158 West, Roanoke Rapids.

A memorial service will be held at 6:30 pm Monday, April 30 at the Lighthouse Baptist Church, 15251 Falling Waters Road in Williamsport, Maryland.

Mr. Gary Winston Thomas

Mr. Gary Winston Thomas, 58, of Roanoke Rapids died April 27, 2018, in his home.

Gary was born May 26, 1959, in Halifax County, a son of Lloyd Winston Thomas and Shelvie Jean Vaughn Thomas, both of whom preceded him in death.

He served in the US Navy; then became an excellent welder.   

Gary worked at Caledonia prison where he was a kitchen supervisor.

Gary loved his daughter and his entire family.  He liked woodworking, fishing, skiing and fabricating.

Survivors include his daughter, Jamie Lynn Hux; his brothers, Ricky, Pat and Gary Thomas; and his former wife, Donna McKibbon.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 pm Tuesday at River City Church, 64 Washington St., in Roanoke Rapids.

The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall after the service.

Cremation services are under the care of Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Service.

Barbara Jean Mills, 79, of Gaston, passed away Sunday, April 29, 2018, at her home.

Barbara was born May 20, 1938, in Halifax County to the late James Willis Mills and Thelma Louise Pittman Mills.

She was also preceded in death by her brother, James Douglas Mills and her sister, Rebecca “Becky” Sykes.

Barbara was a loving sister and aunt.

She is survived by her nephews, Tony Sykes and his wife Sharon, David Mills and his wife Billie Jo and Danny Mills; several great nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 P.M. Thursday, May 3, 2018, in the chapel of Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Service with Dr. Julian R. Mills, Sr. officiating.

Burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery.

Louis V. Mann Jr.

Louis V. Mann,Jr., 81, of Roanoke Rapids, passed away on Friday, April 27, 2018, surrounded by family in his home.

Louis was born December 27, 1936, in Richmond, Va., to the late Louis V. Mann, Sr. and Thelma Adams Mann.

A graduate of the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company Apprenticeship Program, he spent seven years with the company in various positions.

He spent 14 years with Champion Paper Company in such positions as instrument maintenance mechanic, millwright, and machinist, also responsible for machinery balancing and vibration analysis.

Louis was an Instrumentation Mechanic instructor at Roanoke-Chowan Technical Institute in Ahoskie.

After leaving this position, he spent time as a self-employed Instrumentation Contractor for his company, Eastern Controls. He also held the position of Instrumentation and Electrical Design Supervisor for Hydrocarbon Construction Company, Houston, Texas. Once he returned to Halifax County, Mr. Mann held various positions in industrial maintenance, later leading to him heading the Industrial Maintenance Program at Halifax Community College.

In addition, he spent time as a licensed real estate broker and owner of several small businesses.

He is preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Peggy Allen Mann and Brother E. Carroll Mann.

He is survived by his son, Louis “Pete” Mann, III and wife, Temple, of Roanoke Rapids; his daughter, Debbie Pittard and husband, Randy, of Zebulon, NC; his brother, William Mann and wife, Jerry, of Roanoke Rapids; his sister, Brenda Daws and husband, Clint, of Gulf Breeze, Fla.; his sister-in-law, Barbara Mann, of Raleigh; brother-in-laws Garland “Bubba” Allen and wife Doris, of Littleton; Mervin Allen of Sanford, NC and James Allen and wife Beverly of Littleton; his grandson, Stephen Mann and wife, Stephanie, of Nashville, NC; his granddaughter, Meghan Mann, of Raleigh and fiancé Corey Oliver of Roanoke Rapids; his grandson, Gregory Pittard, of Raleigh; and his grandson, Eric Pittard, of Knightdale.

Visitation will take place from 7:00 p.m.- 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 1, 2018 at Wrenn, Clarke & Hagan Funeral and Cremation Service in Roanoke Rapids.

A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, May 2, 2018 at noon in Cedarwood Cemetery with Pastor Norwood Starling officiating.

Henry L Dixon, 69, passed away Friday April 27, 2018, in Greenville, NC.

He is preceded in death by his Father, Frank Dixon Sr., his Mother, Ida B. Dixon, and his brother, Frank Dixon Jr.

He is survived by his son, Timothy Dixon, his Daughter-in-Law Stephanie Dixon of Greenville, NC and his three grandchildren; Brittany Elmer, Ashley Dixon, and Nicholas Dixon.

He had two nephews; Stephen Dixon and Frank Dixon III of Roanoke Rapids. He had one Great Nephew, Christopher Dixon of Roanoke Rapids. And a special lady in his life, Nancy Dixon of Roanoke Rapids.

He retired from Virginia Dept of Corrections after 27 years and loved his family, WWE Wrestling, and Sweet Tea. He was known for his Kindness and Big Laugh that impacted everyone that knew him.

A graveside service will be held at 2:00 pm Wednesday, May 2, 2018, at Cedarwood Cemetery with Pastor Wayne Marshall officiating.

Lorena Blanton Turner Wilson, 81, of Roanoke Rapids, died Saturday, April 28, 2018. 

Lorena, a native of Roanoke Rapids, was the daughter of the late Rev. and Mrs. Carson Blanton.

She was also preceded in death by her first husband, Louis Daniel Turner; her second husband, Leonard Curtis Wilson; a brother, Carson Blanton, Jr.; and a stepdaughter, June Boseman. 

She is survived by her daughter, Debbie Turner Daniel and her husband, Keith of Roanoke Rapids; her grandchildren, Amy Lynn Daniel Boyer and her husband, John, and Brittany Daniel Lonesky and her husband, Kyle, all of Roanoke Rapids; three great-grandchildren, Bryson Burke, Keagan Boyer, Brooklynn Boyer and the fourth on the way to be born to Brittany; her sisters, Marsha Brown and her husband, Douglas of Roanoke Rapids, and Virginia Hagler and her husband, Gene of Upper Marlboro, Maryland; her brothers, Patrick Blanton of Roanoke Rapids, and Greg Blanton and his wife, Maria of Pine Level; her nieces, Julie Frys and her husband, Brian of Roanoke Rapids, Tiffany Langley and her husband, Josh of Roanoke Rapids, Nicole Blanton of Roanoke Rapids, Brooke Blanton of Wilmington, Phyllis Blanton of Cary, Nancy Trojak of Cary, Kim Garrido and her husband, Jose of Hughesville, Maryland and Jackeline Anaya of Pine Level; her nephews, Jason Brown and his wife, Angie of Roanoke Rapids, and Anthony Blanton of Ocean City, Maryland; her stepchildren, Barry Wilson and his wife, Brenda, and Terry Wilson and his wife, Susan, both of Roanoke Rapids; a special friend, Odell Harrington of Roanoke Rapids; and all of her Turner family. 
Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, May 2, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at Harvest Temple Pentecostal Holiness Church in Roanoke Rapids with Rev. Rudy Draper, III officiating. 
Burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids. 
The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Askew Funeral and Cremation Services, 731 Roanoke Ave., Roanoke Rapids.

Marianne Huber Van Scoyoc, 76, died Sunday, April 29, 2018, at Halifax Regional Medical Center.  

Marianne was born in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, to the late Paul A. Huber and Germayne Fischer Huber.

Surviving are her husband of 57 years, Barry L. Van Scoyoc of the home; their children, Michael Van Scoyoc and wife, Laura, of Glen Allen, VA, David Van Scoyoc and wife, Cathleen, of Crofton, MD, Mark Van Scoyoc and wife, Kimberly, of Lake Wylie, SC and Meghaan Markham and husband, Craig, of Pinehurst, NC; her siblings, brother, Fred Huber and wife, Ilene; sister, Carolyn Galasso and husband, Ralph; Barbara Sivi (deceased) and husband, Ron; and Paul Huber (deceased), and wife, Sally.  Also surviving are his grandchildren, Eric Van Scoyoc and wife, Lauren, Jessica Van Scoyoc, Jacob Van Scoyoc, Allison Van Scoyoc, Matthew Van Scoyoc, Bryan Van Scoyoc, William Van Scoyoc, Sarah Van Scoyoc, Rylan Markham and Karee Markham.

The family will receive friends at Askew Funeral Service- Roanoke Rapids; Friday, May 4, 2018 from 6-8 pm.

Father Pius Wekesa will conduct a Funeral Mass at St. John The Baptist Catholic Church Saturday, May 5, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. with inurnment to follow in the church’s columbarium.

Joyce Leigh Storey, 73, died Tuesday, May 01, 2018, at Vidant Roanoke-Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie.

Joyce was born, April 12, 1945, in Northampton County to the late William Harold and Ruby Lassiter Bridgers. 

She loved her family, husband, children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and all the children whom she babysat over the years. In addition to her parents, Joyce was preceded in death by her sister, Doris Bridgers Ricks.

Surviving are her husband of 56 years, Ronald P. Storey, Sr. of the home; children, Ronnie Storey and wife, Susan of Pleasant Hill, NC; Janet Foot and husband, Jason, Mike Storey and wife, Sandy, both of Conway; sister, Frances Jenkins of Potecasi; grandchildren, Amanda Dixon, Tab Storey, Caleb Shell, Greg Outland, Storie Outland, Jordan Martin, Lauren Storey and Hannah Storey; great grandchildren, Kiersten Flythe, Rylan Dixon, Bryleigh Dixon, Arrionna Benton, Reagan Benton and Ian Outland.  Also, all the children whose lives she touched while babysitting through the years. 

Rev. Andy Sloan will conduct a graveside service in the family cemetery on Northampton County High School Rd. Thursday, May 3, 2018 at 11:00 am.

Jeffrey Thomas Smith, 44, passed away Thursday, April 26, 2018.

Jeff was born in Halifax County and a son to the late Dr. James Ronald “J.R.” Smith and Judy Smith Wilson (Keith) of Roanoke Rapids.

He was a graduate of Halifax Academy, Class of 1992 and obtained a Bachelor of Science in Communications from East Carolina University.

Jeff was preceded in death by his father J.R. Smith, maternal grandfather, Tommy West, paternal grandmother, Gladys Smith, paternal grandfather, Faye Smith, and father-in-law, Douglas Wayne Webster.

Surviving are his two sons, Justis and Wesley, and wife, Angie, all of Midlothian, VA; mother, Judy (Keith) Wilson of Roanoke Rapids; brother, Paul (Crystal) Smith of Gaston; niece, Kaylan Smith of Roanoke Rapids; nephew, Jarrett Smith of Gaston; aunts, Carolyn (Steve) Hamill of Littleton and Gloria (Jr) Merritt of Roanoke Rapids; Uncles, Ronny (Lynne) West of Littleton, Gerald (Jane) Smith of Lexington, SC; mother-in-law, Louise (Tommy) Lowry; brother-in-law, Brian Webster; and many cousins.

A private cremation will be held for Jeff.

Friends may visit with the family from 6:30 -  8:00 pm Thursday at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service for a time of remembrance and fellowship.  

An educational scholarship fund for Justis and Wesley has been established.   Memorial donations to that cause may make checks payable to the"Smith Sons Educational Fund" and sent to PO Box 381, Roanoke Rapids, NC 27870.

Mrs. Mattie Tudor Thompson, 88, died April 30, 2018 at Halifax Regional Medical Center.

A Halifax County native, she was born September 9, 1929, the daughter of Willie and Mary Lloyd Tudor.

Mrs. Thompson was a homemaker, and had attended both Gum Chapel and Weldon Pentecostal Holiness Churches.  

She was a loving mother and grandmother.

Mrs. Thompson is survived by her son, Larry Thompson of Roanoke Rapids; her daughters, Rhonda Gregory of Roanoke Rapids, and Nancy Clary and husband Michael of Gasburg, VA; grandson, Robbie White and fiancee' Bobbi Davis Perdue; granddaughters, Teresa Rhodes, Angela Wright (Frank Jr.) and Frankie Evans; eight great-grandchildren; two great-great granddaughters; grandson-in-law, David Rhodes; a loving neighbor and step-daughter, Edna Miles; step-daughter, Ollie Mae Bennett.

In addition her parents, she was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Richard Gregory.

The family will receive friends from 6 - 8 pm Wednesday at Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Service.

The funeral service for Mrs. Thompson will be held at 12:00 noon Thursday from the graveside at Crestview Cemetery.

Pastor Wayne White will preside.

Christopher Dwayne Heustess, 32, of Roanoke Rapids, died Monday, April 30, 2018.

Dwayne was born in Halifax County on September 7, 1985, the son of Christopher Don Heustess and Cheryl Naomi Tripp Heustess.  

Dwayne loved his family, most importantly his kids.

He enjoyed listening to music, and was an avid gamer.

Very artistic, Dwayne also enjoyed history and shows about aliens.  

He was proud to be an excellent welder, and was employed by Merritt Piping and Fabrication as a welder.

Dwayne is survived by his wife, Crystal; his children, Tyler, Leland and Gabi Heustess; his father, Christopher Heustess; his mother, Cheryl Tripp Lee; a brother, Patrick Heustess; a sister, Lenzie Hardin; step-sisters, Tiffany and Heather Lee; grandparents, Donnie and Faye Heustiss, and Winnie Tripp; aunts and uncles, Stacie Ruffin, Sharon and Rusty Miles, Jody Tripp; great-aunts and uncles, Ruby Lena VanDyke, Vickie and Kenny Jenkins, Catherine and Richard Smith, Patsy Heustess, Walter Wheeler and Buck Tripp; mother-in-law, Tammy Norris (Jeff Lassiter); father-in-law, Brian Norris (Crystal); and sisters-in-law, Taylor Lassiter and Sophie Lassiter.

He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Joe Tripp.

The family will receive friends from 6 - 8 pm Friday at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service.

The funeral service for Dwayne will be held at 2 pm Saturday, May 5, 2018 in the chapel of Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service, with Pastor Wayne Marshall presiding.  Interment will follow in Bethlehem Baptist Church cemetery.

Inez C. Wheeler, 80, passed away Thursday, May 3, 2018 at her home in Roanoke Rapids.

Funeral services will be held at 12:00 P.M. Monday, May 7, 2018, at the Roanoke Rapids Church of God with Rev. Jerry Waters officiating.

Burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 10:30 – 11:30 A.M. at the church prior to the service.
