Michael Wayne Kidd

Michael Wayne Kidd (Mike aka “The Little Debbie man”), 69 of Durham, NC passed away Monday, April 9th at Rex Hospital.

He was born in Roanoke Rapids, NC to William and Audrey Kidd.  

He grew up farming with his parents and two older brothers (Billy and Wray Kidd). He married Dorothy (Dot) White of Roanoke Rapids at the age of 19 and they had two children (Kevin and Shannon).

Once he moved to Durham; he did everything from a manager at Pine State, open and run several convenient stores, radio station public relations, sales at Long Beverage, being his own Little Debbie independent distributor, and finally in the last couple of years was a Little Debbie distributor owner.

He married Peggy of Watertown, NY in June 2002. He was a big man with an even bigger heart for his friends and family, especially his four grand boys (Greyson, Dylan, Cameron, and Jackson). He was an avid golfer who loved putting events together in the spirit of competition but more importantly a community. He will sorely be missed but his presence in the community will never be forgotten.   

Mr. Kidd is survived by his wife, Peggy L. Kidd; daughter, Shannon Kidd Santos (Mike); son, Kevin Michael Kidd (Janice Seate); grandchildren, Greyson Thomas Kidd, Dylan Michael Santos, Cameron James Kidd, Jackson Eli Kidd; brothers, William Lee "Billy" Kidd (Carol), Thomas "Wray" Kidd (Dianne); nephew, Christopher Thomas Kidd (fiancé Shannon Gorka); step-sons, Jeffrey and Timothy Branche.

A memorial visitation will be Friday, April 13 from 6p-8p at Clements Funeral Home in Durham.  On Saturday, April 14th we will have a memorial service and burial at the family cemetery located at 8238 US Highway 158, Seaboard, NC at 2pm.

In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to Autism Society of NC, 306 Summit St., Asheville, NC 28803 and Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), 5510 Six Forks Rd, Ste. 107, Raleigh, NC 27609.

Betty Jo Hobbs Spradlin

Betty Jo Hobbs Spradlin, 50, died Saturday, April 14, 2018, in Halifax Regional Medical Center.

Betty was born in Pulaski County, Missouri, October 11, 1967, to the late Sally Carroll.

Known as “Ms. Betty” by her students, she touched the lives of so many children that she taught while working in the child’s day care industry.

She loved her church and was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She was affectionately known as “MeMa” to her grandchildren.

Surviving are her husband, Richard Spradlin; five daughters, Katie Edwards (Daniel McElwee), Vickie Edwards, Stephanie Edwards Davis and husband Bill, Courtney Edwards and fiancé Luis Enriquez and Nikki Srpadlin; two sons, Wesley Spradlin and wife Ashley and James Spradlin and one sister, Tammy Olson.

Also surviving are nine grandchildren, Emma, Keegan, Brendon, Grayson, “Little” Luis, Isaac, Eli, J.T. and Aliyah.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, April 17, 2018, at Askew Funeral Service- Jackson Chapel, Jackson, NC from 6-8 pm.

Rev. Ricky Browder will conduct funeral services Wednesday, April 18, 2018, at Potecasi Baptist Church at 11:00 am.

Interment will follow in Milwaukee Cemetery.

Nicholas “Nick” Ryan Edwards, 20, died Saturday, April 14, 2018.

Nick was born in Halifax County to Brian Keith and Melissa Yarboro Edwards.

He was a graduate of Roanoke Rapids High School, Class of 2015, and loved playing Frisbee Golf.

In addition to his mother, Nick was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Debbie Thorne and paternal grandfather, Ray Edwards.

Surviving are his father, Brian K. Edwards and Amy Nowell; sister, Emli Elizabeth Edwards; brother, Dustin Mark Mountford, all of Roanoke Rapids; paternal grandmother, Betty Lou Edwards of Roanoke Rapids; maternal grandfather, Willie Yarboro and wife Pat, of Littleton; uncle, Chip Edwards and Debbie Smith, of Zebulon, NC and uncle, Willie Yarboro, Jr.

Reverends Layne Wallace and Randy Martin will conduct funeral services Tuesday, April 17, 2018, at 2:00 pm at Rosemary Baptist Church where the family will also receive friends in the fellowship hall prior to services from 12:30pm to 1:45pm.

Interment will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery.

John A. St. Sing, 74, of Emporia, VA, died Thursday, April 5, 2018. He was born in Halifax County ,NC, son of the late Thomas J. and Katie Carter St. Sing.

Mr. St. Sing retired as Sergeant with the Emporia Police Department with more than 33 years of service. He loved his family and community.

Preceding John in death were his wives, Carolyn Taylor St. Sing and Doris Willis St. Sing.

Surviving are his son, David St. Sing (Pheobee); step daughter, Kaye Jackson; grandchildren, David N. St. Sing, Dustan Jarratt (Emily), Sarah Jackson (Daniel),Lynsey Overstreet (Keith); six great grandchildren, among them, Hudson Jarratt, Reed and Audrey Overstreet.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00pm Monday, April 9,2018, at Echols Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Greensville Memorial Cemetery.The family will receive friends at the Funeral Home Monday from 11:00 am until 1:00pm

Elizabeth Carol Winston Howell

Elizabeth Carol Winston Howell passed away at her home in Seaboard, North Carolina, on Saturday, April 7, 2018.

Carol was born on January 2, 1935, in Raleigh.

She grew up in Granville County, North Carolina, and attended Oak Hill High School.

Carol received a B.S degree in Home Economics from Woman’s College of the University of North Carolina in Greensboro.

After graduation, she served as an Assistant Agent and a Home Agent in the North Carolina Agricultural Extension Service in Northampton county for 3.5 years. She then taught high school at her alma mater for one year before returning to Northampton county to make her home, becoming a wife, mother, and grandmother deeply devoted to her family.

Carol was an active member of the Seaboard Baptist Church, where she served as a Sunday School teacher, the director of Bible School, and a member of the Women’s Missionary Union. She was also an active participant in her community in both formal and informal ways—for example, as a Meals on Wheels volunteer, an organizer for the town’s Christmas parade, or the first one to pitch in when an elderly neighbor needed to visit the grocery store or children were clamoring for a ride to the pool.

Carol generously shared her time and resources with her friends and family, and her giving spirit was a blessing for her community.

Carol was preceded in death by her parents, George and Mildred Winston of Grassy Creek, NC, and her husband of 54 years, Charles Cornelius Howell (C.C).

She is survived by her brother: George Turner Winston (Cathy) of Roanoke, VA; her children: Catherine MacAllister (Mark) of Pittsboro and Elizabeth Parrish (Phil) of Wendell; her grandchildren: Manon Howell MacAllister and Cade Alan MacAllister of Raleigh; and her step-grandchildren: Matthew West Parrish and Elizabeth Ann Parrish of Clayton.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 on Wednesday, April 11, 2018 at Seaboard Baptist Church, with the Rev. Randy Miller and the Rev. Rick Gaskins officiating.

Burial will follow at Seaboard Cemetery. The family will receive friends following the services at Seaboard Baptist Church Fellowship Hall.

Charlie Tripp, Jr, 98, of Roanoke Rapids, died Saturday, April 7, 2018, at Signature Healthcare of Roanoke Rapids.

 

He was born in Halifax County, son of the late Charlie Tripp,Sr and Annie Spain Tripp. Charlie was retired as a cab driver and formerly worked at J.P. Stevens Company.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lillian Tripp; two sons, Floyd Earl Tripp and Charles Edward Tripp,III; siblings, Oscar Tripp, Grover Tripp, Samuel Tripp and Maria Tripp; great grandchild, Samuel Justin Tripp.

Charlie is survived by a daughter-in-law, Christine Tripp; three grandchildren, Stacy Tripp (Cheryl), David Wayne Tripp (Melinda), Carol Griffin; great grandchildren, Christopher Earl Tripp, Stephen Shane Tripp, Jessica Elaine Tripp.

A graveside service will be held at 2:00 pm Wednesday, April 11, 2018, at Cedarwood Cemetery with Dr. Dennis W. Gregory officiating. The family will receive friends at Wrenn, Clarke, & Hagan Funeral Home from 1:00 pm until time of service.

Mary Vann Joyner died Sunday, April 8, 2018 at Liberty Commons Nursing Center in Weldon.

Born in Northampton County, December 7, 1920; she was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, C. Linwood Joyner and her son Charles M. Joyner.

Mary is survived by her sons, C. Linwood Joyner, Jr. and his wife, Winni of New Bern, Michael V. Joyner of Zebulon; Grandchildren, Lin Joyner and wife Cindy of Charlotte, Charles M. “Chuck” Joyner and his wife Susan of Jackson and Mary “Molly” J. Westover of Vanceboro; four great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild and her daughter-in-law, Elaine Joyner of Roanoke Rapids.

Graveside Services will be held on Friday, April 13, 2018 at Garysburg United Methodist Church Cemetery at 2:00 P.M. with Rev. Sue Owens officiating.

The family will receive friends after the service on Friday.

Joseph Elijah 'Buster' Tripp

Joseph Elijah “Buster” Tripp, died Saturday, April 7,2018, at the age of 72.

A native of Halifax County, he was the son of the late Carlton Ray Tripp and Stella Ruby Green Tripp.

Joseph retired from the local textile mill as a loom fixer and also worked many years at Martin Exterminating.

An accomplished musician, he enjoyed playing guitar professionally and for friends and family.

A great father to his children, he mainly loved spending fun times with his family and friends.

Joe is survived by his fiancé, Shirly H. Allen and her children; Cynthia Allen Thomas and James Irvin Allen, all of Roanoke Rapids; his daughter, Cheryl Tripp Lee of Roanoke Rapids; his son, Joseph E .”Jody” Tripp Jr. of Roanoke Rapids; brother, Carlton “Buck” Tripp Jr. of Gaston; sister, Ruby Lena Vandyke of Henrico, N.C.; grandchildren, Dwayne Heustess, Lenzie Hardin, Jeremy Tripp, Jakob Tripp, Julia Tripp and Ava Tripp; great-grandchildren, Tyler, Leland, and Gabby Heustess and Daniel Smith; numerous nieces and nephews that he loved dearly.

Funeral Services will be held Thursday, April 12, 2018, at 2:00 P.M. in the chapel of Wrenn, Clarke and Hagan Funeral and Cremation Service with Pastor Troy Green officiating.

Burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, April 11, 2018 from 7:00 P.M. until 8:30 P.M. at the funeral home.

Mr. Jamie Douglas Strickland, 37, of Halifax died April 9, 2018 at his home.

Jamie was born in Halifax County on September 9, 1980, to Frankie Odell and Doris Jean Harris Strickland.

He was a 1998 graduate of Northwest High School and a 2011 graduate of HCC, where he obtained his degree as a paralegal. Jamie also worked as a house painter.

He was a loving, dedicated father and best friend to his daughter, Halyn Jean Strickland.

Survivors include his daughter, Halyn Jean; his parents, Frankie and Doris Strickland of Roanoke Rapids; his brother and sister-in-law, Anthony "Tony" Strickland and Wendy of Roanoke Rapids; his fiancee, Lindsay Brianne Barmer of Halifax; as well as cousins, aunts, uncles, and a niece, Kimberly Diane Traverse, of Haw River.

Jamie was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Jesse and Doris Ellen Harris; and his paternal grandparents,Johnnie and Gladys Strickland.

The family will receive friends from 6 - 8 pm Friday at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service.   

The funeral service will be held at 1:00 pm Saturday in the Chapel of Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service, with interment to follow in Crestview Cemetery.

Carolyn Elizabeth Gardner Vaughan, 65, died Wednesday, April 11, 2018, in Halifax Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Vaughan was born in Nash County, April 3, 1953, to the late James Alford and Gladys Rider Gardner.

She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Vaughan was preceded in death by her two brothers, Tommy Alford Gardner and James Earnest Gardner.

Surviving are her husband, Tony Elvis Vaughan of the home; daughter, Teresa Harrell and husband Jay, of Roanoke Rapids; son, Tony Curtis Vaughan and wife, Brandy, of Las Vegas, NV; sisters, Janice Strickland of Roanoke Rapids and Barbara Silver of Enfield; grandchildren, Wil Harrell, Austin Vaughan, Cody Vaughan and Emma Carnell. Also surviving are her very special friends, David and Cathy Tuck.

The family will have a gathering of friends to remember Mrs. Vaughan’s life Saturday, April 14, 2018, at Askew Funeral and Cremation Service in Roanoke Rapids from 4:00pm-6:00pm.

Betty Clarke Harris

Betty Clarke Harris, 60, of Bath, NC, died Saturday, April 14, 2018 at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, NC.

Betty was born in Richmond, VA., the daughter of the late W. Lawrence Clarke and Evelyn Weaver Clarke. 

She graduated from Furrman College in Rocky Mount, Va., then graduated from the Nursing Program at Wilson Community College.

She obtained her Bachelors of Science Degree in Nursing, and her Master of Science in Nursing from East Carolina University. 

Her Nursing career included serving as a Flight Nurse for East Care; working in different departments at Vidant and was currently a Nurse Education Specialist in the East Carolina Heart Institute.

Betty loved the ocean, sand, and fishing. Most of her spare time was spent at the coast casting her fishing rod and taking in God’s beautiful creation. 

Surviving are: a brother, Edward Lawrence Clarke and his wife, Janet Tindall Clarke, of Roanoke Rapids, NC; a niece, Nicole Clarke Luck and her husband, John Michael Luck of Houston, TX. Also, two great nephews; Colin Clarke Luck and Noah Graeme Luck of Houston, TX, and all of her nursing family at Vidant.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 28, at 4:00 pm in the Inter-Faith Chapel at Vidant Medical Center, Greenville, NC. with Rev. Jane Rose officiating.

Major Richard Bly Williams, USAF, Retired, 74, of Pleasant Hill died Wednesday, April 18, 2018 in his residence.

Maj. Williams was born March 3, 1944 in Pulaski Co., Arkansas, the son of Jimmy Carl Williams, Sr and Emily Ragland Williams.  

He received a Masters Degree in Industrial Engineering from Oklahoma State and a Masters Degree in Computer Science from American University.   

He played, and taught, chess and won the base championship while stationed at Lackland AFB.  

While at Lackland, he also played on the championship winning football team there.  Maj. Williams was an avid runner, and enjoyed playing both golf and baseball. He worked for a while with the FBI in Washington, DC; and also served professorships at Arkansas Tech University, UALR and Arkansas State University.  

Survivors include his wife, Patricia Conwell Williams; sons, Richard James Williams of Grady, AR, Michael Wayne Williams of Russellville, AR; grandchildren, James David Williams of Van Beuren, AR, Alexis Ann Williams of N Little Rock, AR; great-granddaughter, Littie Danielle Williams; his brother, Jimmy Carl Williams, Jr of CA; nephew, Jimmy Carl Williams, III of AR; and an aunt, Josephine Rowan, of Little Rock, AR.

Maj. Williams requested to be cremated and a memorial service to be held at a later date.

Jerry Bradley Hux

Jerry Bradley Hux 57, of Roanoke Rapids, died Friday April 20, 2018.

Jerry, a native of Halifax County, was the son of the late William Bradley “W.B.” and Rachel Keeter Hux.

He graduated from Roanoke Rapids class of 1980.

He worked most of his life with the family business of Rufus B. Hux and Son General Contractors.

He was a life-long member of the Roanoke Valley Rescue squad. He was also involved with several fire and rescue departments in Halifax and Northampton Counties.

Jerry is survived by his sister, Robin Hux Isles and her husband, David, of Roanoke Rapids, his nephews, Jordan, Sammy and Matt Isles all of Roanoke Rapids; his uncles, Ronald Luke Keeter and his wife, Mary of Aurelian Springs and Tommy Keeter and his wife, Polly of Gasburg, Va., his aunts, Katherine K. Lee and her husband, Glen and Linda K. Wrenn both of Roanoke Rapids, Joan Webster and her husband Alvis of Graham; several cousins, good friends, Wesley Porch of Roanoke Rapids, Paul Nowell of Weldon and his loving family at Signature Healthcare in Roanoke Rapids.

Funeral Services will be held Tuesday April 24, 2018, at 2 P.M. at South Rosemary Baptist Church with Rev. Dennis Joyner and Rev. Barry Gardner officiating.

Interment will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids.

The family will receive friends Monday from 7-8:30 at Askew Funeral and Cremation Services, 731 Roanoke Ave Roanoke Rapids.

In lieu of flowers the family has ask that donations be made to a local volunteer fire or rescue organization of your choice in honor of Jerry.

Jamie Douglas Strickland

Mr. Jamie Douglas Strickland, 37, of Halifax died April 9, 2018 at his home.

Jamie was born in Halifax County on September 9, 1980, to Frankie Odell and Doris Jean Harris Strickland.

He was a 1998 graduate of Northwest High School and a 2011 graduate of HCC, where he obtained his degree as a paralegal. Jamie also worked as a house painter.

He was a loving, dedicated father and best friend to his daughter, Halyn Jean Strickland.

Survivors include his daughter, Halyn Jean; his parents, Frankie and Doris Strickland of Roanoke Rapids; his brother and sister-in-law, Anthony "Tony" Strickland and Wendy of Roanoke Rapids; his fiancee, Lindsay Brianne Barmer of Halifax; as well as cousins, aunts, uncles, and a niece, Kimberly Diane Traverse, of Haw River.

Jamie was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Jesse and Doris Ellen Harris; and his paternal grandparents,Johnnie and Gladys Strickland.

The family will receive friends from 6 - 8 pm Friday at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service.   

The funeral service will be held at 1:00 pm Saturday in the Chapel of Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service, with interment to follow in Crestview Cemetery.

Carolyn Elizabeth Gardner Vaughan, 65, died Wednesday, April 11, 2018, in Halifax Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Vaughan was born in Nash County, April 3, 1953, to the late James Alford and Gladys Rider Gardner.

She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Vaughan was preceded in death by her two brothers, Tommy Alford Gardner and James Earnest Gardner.

Surviving are her husband, Tony Elvis Vaughan of the home; daughter, Teresa Harrell and husband Jay, of Roanoke Rapids; son, Tony Curtis Vaughan and wife, Brandy, of Las Vegas, NV; sisters, Janice Strickland of Roanoke Rapids and Barbara Silver of Enfield; grandchildren, Wil Harrell, Austin Vaughan, Cody Vaughan and Emma Carnell. Also surviving are her very special friends, David and Cathy Tuck.

The family will have a gathering of friends to remember Mrs. Vaughan’s life Saturday, April 14, 2018, at Askew Funeral and Cremation Service in Roanoke Rapids from 4:00pm-6:00pm.

Michael Wayne Kidd

Michael Wayne Kidd (Mike aka “The Little Debbie man”), 69 of Durham, NC passed away Monday, April 9th at Rex Hospital.

He was born in Roanoke Rapids, NC to William and Audrey Kidd.  

He grew up farming with his parents and two older brothers (Billy and Wray Kidd). He married Dorothy (Dot) White of Roanoke Rapids at the age of 19 and they had two children (Kevin and Shannon).

Once he moved to Durham; he did everything from a manager at Pine State, open and run several convenient stores, radio station public relations, sales at Long Beverage, being his own Little Debbie independent distributor, and finally in the last couple of years was a Little Debbie distributor owner.

He married Peggy of Watertown, NY in June 2002. He was a big man with an even bigger heart for his friends and family, especially his four grand boys (Greyson, Dylan, Cameron, and Jackson). He was an avid golfer who loved putting events together in the spirit of competition but more importantly a community. He will sorely be missed but his presence in the community will never be forgotten.   

Mr. Kidd is survived by his wife, Peggy L. Kidd; daughter, Shannon Kidd Santos (Mike); son, Kevin Michael Kidd (Janice Seate); grandchildren, Greyson Thomas Kidd, Dylan Michael Santos, Cameron James Kidd, Jackson Eli Kidd; brothers, William Lee "Billy" Kidd (Carol), Thomas "Wray" Kidd (Dianne); nephew, Christopher Thomas Kidd (fiancé Shannon Gorka); step-sons, Jeffrey and Timothy Branche.

A memorial visitation will be Friday, April 13 from 6p-8p at Clements Funeral Home in Durham.  On Saturday, April 14th we will have a memorial service and burial at the family cemetery located at 8238 US Highway 158, Seaboard, NC at 2pm.

In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to Autism Society of NC, 306 Summit St., Asheville, NC 28803 and Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), 5510 Six Forks Rd, Ste. 107, Raleigh, NC 27609.

Betty Jo Hobbs Spradlin

Betty Jo Hobbs Spradlin, 50, died Saturday, April 14, 2018, in Halifax Regional Medical Center.

Betty was born in Pulaski County, Missouri, October 11, 1967, to the late Sally Carroll.

Known as “Ms. Betty” by her students, she touched the lives of so many children that she taught while working in the child’s day care industry.

She loved her church and was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She was affectionately known as “MeMa” to her grandchildren.

Surviving are her husband, Richard Spradlin; five daughters, Katie Edwards (Daniel McElwee), Vickie Edwards (Brock Turner), Stephanie Edwards Davis and husband Bill, Courtney Edwards and fiancé Luis Enriquez and Nikki Spradlin; two sons, Wesley Spradlin and wife Ashley and James Spradlin and one sister, Tammy Olson.

Also surviving are nine grandchildren, Emma, Keegan, Brendon, Grayson, “Little” Luis, Isaac, Eli, J.T. and Aliyah.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, April 17, 2018, at Askew Funeral Service- Jackson Chapel, Jackson, NC from 6-8 pm.

Rev. Ricky Browder will conduct funeral services Wednesday, April 18, 2018, at Potecasi Baptist Church at 11:00 am.

Interment will follow in Milwaukee Cemetery.
