Daniel Dwight Bowman Sr.

Daniel Dwight Bowman Sr., 91, died Wednesday, March 21, 2018, at Williamston House in Williamston, NC.

Mr. Bowman was born, August 1, 1926, in Marion, NC, to the late David Anderson and Elizabeth Carter Bowman.

Mr. Bowman was a United Methodist minister for more than 50 years, as well as having built churches from Kentucky to North Carolina with the Church of The Nazarene.  

He was also a WWII veteran having served in the United States Navy.

He loved woodworking and gardening.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Bowman was preceded in death by his daughter, Susan Carroll Chandler; brothers, Robert Lee Bowman, David Carter Bowman, and David Anderson Bowman and his sisters, Elizabeth Silver, Florence Flinchum and Helen Spencer.

Surviving is his wife of 70 years, Dolores Conley Bowman of Windsor; daughters, Sandra Brock and husband, Ron Justice, of Cofield, NC, Barsha Hasty and husband, Rupert, of Williamston, NC, Bobbe Vanags and husband, Johnny, of San Antonio, TX; son, Danny Bowman and fiancé, Betty Jones, of Milwaukee, NC; grandchildren, Suzanne Hudson, Sean Chandler, Shanna Chandler, Todd Bowman, Lee Jones, Candace Bowen, Joshua Brock, Kyle Brock, Starlynn Nipper Hasty and Ashleigh Hasty. Also surviving are 17 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.  

Rev. Jim Cox will conduct funeral services at Askew Funeral Service Jackson Chapel, in Jackson, NC, Sunday, March 25, 2018, at 2:00 pm.

The family will receive friends at 1:00 pm, one hour prior to the service.

Interment will follow in Milwaukee Cemetery follow the chapel service.

Flowers are accepted and the family has suggested memorial contributions be made to Alzheimer's Association- Eastern NC Chapter, 3739 National Drive, Suite 110, Raleigh, NC 27612 and/or Williamston House, 160 Santree Dr., Williamston, NC 27892.

Medie Woodruff Merritt, 92, passed from this life into her eternal home on Wednesday, March 21, 2018.

A native of Northampton County, Medie was the daughter of the late Clyde H. Woodruff and Lucille Hargrave Woodruff.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer L. Merritt; a brother, Thurman Woodruff Sr.; and a sister, Sue Woodruff Davis.

A retired homemaker, Medie enjoyed sewing, crafting, and gardening, as well as spending time with her family and friends.

Mrs. Merritt is survived by a son, Samuel T. ”Dickie” Jordan of Roanoke Rapids; a daughter, Helen Jordan Draper of Ahoskie; step-sons, Lawrence W. (Linda) Merritt of Clearwater Fla., and Daniel S. “Steve” (Frances) Merritt of Roanoke Rapids; a step-daughter, Linda C. Hopkins (Ronnie) of Elizabeth City; brothers, Lynn and Glenn Woodruff of Roanoke Rapids; sister, Jean Hargrove of Newport News, Virginia; numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren.

Graveside Services will be held Monday, March 26, 2018, at 11:00 A.M. at Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids with Minister Steve Merritt officiating.

The family will receive friends at Wrenn Clarke & Hagan Funeral and Cremation Service from 10:00 A.M. until service time.

Kalleope "Kally" Philosophos Shuart, 91, of Lake Gaston, passed away on Friday, March 23rd, 2018.

She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Jim Shuart; four sons, Mark, Kent, Todd and Glen Shuart; three sisters, Maria Calomeris, Olga Sens and Georgia Raspa; eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 28, 2018 evening at Askew Funeral Service in Roanoke Rapids.

Funeral service and interment will be 1 p.m. Thursday, March 29, 2018 at Lakeside Lutheran Church in Littleton with Father Paul Christy officiating.

Neil Stuart Lewis, 58, of Halifax, passed away Sunday, March 25, 2018, at his home.

Mr. Lewis was born October 18, 1959, in Halifax County to the late Kindred Elton Lewis and Peggy Cannon Lewis.

He was a sweet and loving husband, attended Calvary Baptist Church and worked at Kapstone for 28 years.

Mr. Lewis is survived by his wife, Shasha Zhang; his father-in-law, Jian Guo Zhang; his mother-in-law, Suzhen He; his brothers, Steve Lewis and his wife Janna and Stan Lewis and his wife Sue; his sister, Sherry Conner and her husband Kenneth; his aunts and uncles and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, March 31, 2018 at Calvary Baptist Church with Rev. Randy Martin officiating.

Louise Bryant Drake

Louise Bryant Drake, 86, passed away Sunday, March 25, 2018.

She was born, January 8, 1932, in Roxobel, NC, to the late Clarence and Nell Bryant.  

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Drake was preceded in death by her husband, William Thomas Drake and her two brothers, Clyde and Charles Bryant.  

Mrs. Drake was a loving mother and grandmother who enjoyed every moment with family and friends.

Surviving are her children, Joan Massey and husband, Tommy, and son, Michael Drake. Also surviving are her grandchildren, Jeff Massey and wife, Brook, Jason Massey and wife, Alyssa and Garrett Drake. In addition, she has three great grandchildren, Everett, Emma, and Avery Massey.

She was a member of Rehoboth United Methodist Church where she was the church pianist for many years and a devoted church member.  

The family will receive friends at Askew Funeral Service- Jackson Chapel in Jackson, NC, Tuesday, March 27, 2018, from 7-8:30 pm and other times at her daughter’s home at 1115 Bethel Church Road, Pleasant Hill, NC

Kenny Bryant, nephew of Mrs. Drake, will conduct services Wednesday, March 28, 2018, at 2:00 pm at Rehoboth United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the Roxobel-Kelford Cemetery.

Savannah Rae Holcomb, infant daughter of Ricky Holcomb and Ashley Hardy, died Tuesday, March 27, 2018, at Halifax Regional Medical Center.

In addition to her parents, Savannah is survived by her brothers; Wyatt Mason and Robert Richardson, grandparents; Bo and Rhonda Hardy, Ricky and Sissy Holcomb, and Tony and Gayle Stamper, great grandparents; Wilbur Casey, Nancy Hardy, and Vivian and Earl Stamper.

Savannah was predeceased by great grandparents; Bonnie Casey, Bo Hardy Sr., Ruth Holcomb, and Dorothy Brock.

Graveside services will be held Saturday, March 31, 2018, at 1:00 P.M. at the Hardy Family Cemetery with Dr. Dennis Gregory officiating. The family will receive friends after the service.

Mrs. Mae Belle Osborne Carter

Mrs. Mae Belle Osborne Carter, 76, of Rhea Smith Road, died March 28, 2018 at home.

A Lee County native, she was born January 21, 1942, the daughter of James Clifton Osborne and Minnie Lovegrove Osborne.

Mrs. Carter was retired from American Enka Textiles; and, was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.   

She enjoyed being a wife, mama, grandma and homemaker, as well as growing and taking care of flowers.

She is survived by her husband of nearly 60 years, Vernon Ray Carter; daughters, Juanita Rahuba (Gene) of Greensboro, Cynthia Pike and Faye Woodruff (Eddie) all of Roanoke Rapids, Susan Godsey of Manteo; brother, Robert Osborne; and cousin, Mildred Staton , both of Scotland Neck; grandchildren, Peggy, Linda Gail, Diane, Randy, James, Michael, and Bobbi Sue; and 10 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a sister and brother-in-law, Hilda and Ray Moore; brothers, Jimmy Osborne, Haywood Hackney, Theo Hackney; and nephews, Jimmy Osborne, Jr, Randy Osborne, and David Moore.

The family will receive friends from 6 - 8 pm Friday at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service.

The funeral service will be held at 3 pm Saturday in the Hockaday Funeral Home Chapel.  

 Interment will follow in Corinth United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Blanche Holland Paul Price

Blanche Holland Paul Price passed away March 25, 2018, at Carolina Rest Home. She was 97 years old.

Blanche was born November 5, 1920 in Norfolk Virginia and graduated from Maury High School.

She and her second husband, Charles Price, founded Price’s Refrigeration and Heating Services, Inc. after moving to Lake Gaston in 1971.

She was preceded in death by her parents, the late Walton B. Holland and Blanche Hargrove Holland, by her first husband, Vernon R. Paul and her second husband, G. Charles Price.

Blanche leaves behind her daughter, Lois P. Blum and her husband, Fred D. Blum of Springfield, Virginia, her son Ronald W. Paul and his wife Virginia D. Paul of Lake Gaston; grandchildren, Janet B. Lynch and her husband, Charles of Clifton, Virginia; David Keith Blum and his wife Leesa of Fairfax Station, Virginia, Christopher G. Paul and his wife Tracie of Roanoke Rapids and John T. Paul and his wife Tonya of Emporia, Virginia and eight-great grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held Tuesday April 3, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel of Askew Funeral and Cremation Services in Roanoke Rapids with Rev. Rick Russell officiating.

The family will receive friends following the service at the Funeral Home.

David Braswell Camp

David Braswell Camp, Jr., 82, of Roanoke Rapids, died Thursday, March 28, 2018.

David, a native of Halifax County, was the son of the late David Braswell Camp, Sr. and Onie Alene Glover Camp.

He served his Country in the United States Army. While in the Army he attended the Navy school of music. He was a member of Rosemary United Methodist Church. He retired from Champion International Paper mill with 40 years of service.

David is survived by his wife Jean Camp, his daughter, Karen Camp-White of Virginia Beach, Virginia, his son, William "Billy" Camp and his wife, Lychel B. Camp of Roseburg, Oregon; five grandchildren Christina, Victoria, Louis, Kristen and Chris; two great-grandchildren Allie and Madison; his brother, Jimmy Camp of Littleton.

Memorial services will be held Wednesday, April 4, 2018 at 1 P.M. at Rosemary United Methodist Church with Rev. Steve McElroy officiating. Military honors will be rendered.

The family will receive friends following the service in the fellowship hall.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the family at Rosemary United Methodist Church, 900 Jackson St., Roanoke Rapids, NC 28780.

Deborah  “Debbie” Peffer  Braswell, 63, of Littleton, NC, passed away on Monday, April 02, 2018.

A native of Halifax County, she was born to the late Leon Long and Margie Pepper Peffer.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Douglas Wayne Braswell, Sr., her sister, Linda Peffer Owens and her brother, Leon Long Peffer, lll.

She is survived by her sons, Richard Long Braswell, Douglas Wayne Braswell, Jr. both of Littleton, her granddaughter, Emily Paige Braswell, sister, Darlene Taylor and her husband, Bobby of Kinston, two brothers, David Peffer of Roanoke Rapids and Terry Peffer and his wife Susan of Henderson, brother-in-law Johnny Braswell of Roanoke Rapids and a host of beloved nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be held Thursday April 5, 2018 at 2 P.M.  in the Chapel of Askew Funeral and Cremation Services in Roanoke Rapids with Rev. Randy Martin officiating.

Interment will follow in the Braswell family cemetery in Littleton.

David Elwood 'Woody' Woodard

David Elwood 'Woody' Woodard

Mr. David Elwood "Woody" Woodard, 82, of Roanoke Rapids passed away Thursday, April 5, 2018 at UNC Hospitals with his loving family by his side.

Woody was born in Wayne County on May 31, 1935, the son of the late William and Estelle Woodard.

He served his country in the US Army.  

In 1962 he moved to Roanoke Rapids, where he became known as the "Lanceman."  

He retired from Lance, Inc. and later worked at Ralph's Barbecue, but the highlight of his career was when he became "Mr. Woody, the Bus Driver" for Roanoke Rapids Graded School District.

Woody was a faithful member of Victory Baptist Church where he served as deacon, usher, greeter and soul winner.

He loved all people and he loved life.

Woody is survived by his wife, Naomi; his daughter Vickie Blackley of Dyersburg, TN; his son Gene Woodard and wife Cheryl of Roanoke Rapids; his daughter Phyllis Ramsay and husband Stan of Morehead City; his daughter Grace Lucas and husband Danny of Roanoke Rapids; five grandchildren, April York and husband Donnie of Ripley, TN; Brandon Woodard of Roanoke Rapids; Brittany Clements and husband Brandon of Emporia, VA; Zachary Lucas and wife Karen of Matthews, NC; and Savannah Lucas of Roanoke Rapids; six great-grandchildren, Bailey York and Bryce York of Ripley, TN; Cade Clements, Presley Clements, Saylor Clements and Anniston Clements of Emporia, VA; and Baby Boy Lucas - due in May, of Matthews, NC; two sisters, Essie Smith of Goldsboro, NC and Linda Shaver of Apex, NC; and one brother, Harold Woodard of Princeton, NC.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Layton Woodard, Leamon Woodard and Melvin Woodard; and by his sisters, Ann Giddings and Jesse Parnell.

The family will receive friends and family at Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Service from 6 - 8 pm on Saturday, April, 7, 2018.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at Victory Baptist Church, 2360 Bolling Road, Roanoke Rapids, NC, at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, April 8, 2018, with Pastor Jeremy Kobernat presiding.  Interment will follow in Crestview Memorial Park.

John A. St. Sing, 74, of Emporia, VA, died Thursday, April 5, 2018. He was born in Halifax County ,NC, son of the late Thomas J. and Katie Carter St. Sing.

Mr. St. Sing retired as Sergeant with the Emporia Police Department with more than 33 years of service. He loved his family and community.

Preceding John in death were his wives, Carolyn Taylor St. Sing and Doris Willis St. Sing.

Surviving are his son, David St. Sing (Pheobee); step daughter, Kaye Jackson; grandchildren, David N. St. Sing, Dustan Jarratt (Emily), Sarah Jackson (Daniel),Lynsey Overstreet (Keith); six great grandchildren, among them, Hudson Jarratt, Reed and Audrey Overstreet.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00pm Monday, April 9,2018, at Echols Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Greensville Memorial Cemetery.The family will receive friends at the Funeral Home Monday from 11:00 am until 1:00pm

Elizabeth Carol Winston Howell

Elizabeth Carol Winston Howell passed away at her home in Seaboard, North Carolina, on Saturday, April 7, 2018.

Carol was born on January 2, 1935, in Raleigh.

She grew up in Granville County, North Carolina, and attended Oak Hill High School.

Carol received a B.S degree in Home Economics from Woman’s College of the University of North Carolina in Greensboro.

After graduation, she served as an Assistant Agent and a Home Agent in the North Carolina Agricultural Extension Service in Northampton county for 3.5 years. She then taught high school at her alma mater for one year before returning to Northampton county to make her home, becoming a wife, mother, and grandmother deeply devoted to her family.

Carol was an active member of the Seaboard Baptist Church, where she served as a Sunday School teacher, the director of Bible School, and a member of the Women’s Missionary Union. She was also an active participant in her community in both formal and informal ways—for example, as a Meals on Wheels volunteer, an organizer for the town’s Christmas parade, or the first one to pitch in when an elderly neighbor needed to visit the grocery store or children were clamoring for a ride to the pool.

Carol generously shared her time and resources with her friends and family, and her giving spirit was a blessing for her community.

Carol was preceded in death by her parents, George and Mildred Winston of Grassy Creek, NC, and her husband of 54 years, Charles Cornelius Howell (C.C).

She is survived by her brother: George Turner Winston (Cathy) of Roanoke, VA; her children: Catherine MacAllister (Mark) of Pittsboro and Elizabeth Parrish (Phil) of Wendell; her grandchildren: Manon Howell MacAllister and Cade Alan MacAllister of Raleigh; and her step-grandchildren: Matthew West Parrish and Elizabeth Ann Parrish of Clayton.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 on Wednesday, April 11, 2018 at Seaboard Baptist Church, with the Rev. Randy Miller and the Rev. Rick Gaskins officiating.

Burial will follow at Seaboard Cemetery. The family will receive friends following the services at Seaboard Baptist Church Fellowship Hall.

Charlie Tripp Jr., 98, of Roanoke Rapids, died Saturday, April 7, 2018, at Signature Healthcare of Roanoke Rapids.

He was born in Halifax County, son of the late Charlie Tripp,Sr and Annie Spain Tripp.

Charlie was retired as a cab driver and formerly worked at J.P. Stevens Company.

Mary Vann Joyner died Sunday, April 8, 2018 at Liberty Commons Nursing Center in Weldon.

Born in Northampton County, December 7, 1920; she was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, C. Linwood Joyner and her son Charles M. Joyner.

Mary is survived by her sons, C. Linwood Joyner, Jr. and his wife, Winni of New Bern, Michael V. Joyner of Zebulon; Grandchildren, Lin Joyner and wife Cindy of Charlotte, Charles M. “Chuck” Joyner and his wife Susan of Jackson and Mary “Molly” J. Westover of Vanceboro; four great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild and her daughter-in-law, Elaine Joyner of Roanoke Rapids.

Graveside Services will be held on Friday, April 13, 2018 at Garysburg United Methodist Church Cemetery at 2:00 P.M. with Rev. Sue Owens officiating.

The family will receive friends after the service on Friday.

Joseph Elijah 'Buster' Tripp

Joseph Elijah “Buster” Tripp, died Saturday, April 7,2018, at the age of 72.

A native of Halifax County, he was the son of the late Carlton Ray Tripp and Stella Ruby Green Tripp.

Joseph retired from the local textile mill as a loom fixer and also worked many years at Martin Exterminating.

An accomplished musician, he enjoyed playing guitar professionally and for friends and family.

A great father to his children, he mainly loved spending fun times with his family and friends.

Joe is survived by his fiancé, Shirly H. Allen and her children; Cynthia Allen Thomas and James Irvin Allen, all of Roanoke Rapids; his daughter, Cheryl Tripp Lee of Roanoke Rapids; his son, Joseph E .”Jody” Tripp Jr. of Roanoke Rapids; brother, Carlton “Buck” Tripp Jr. of Gaston; sister, Ruby Lena Vandyke of Henrico, N.C.; grandchildren, Dwayne Heustess, Lenzie Hardin, Jeremy Tripp, Jakob Tripp, Julia Tripp and Ava Tripp; great-grandchildren, Tyler, Leland, and Gabby Heustess and Daniel Smith; numerous nieces and nephews that he loved dearly.

Funeral Services will be held Thursday, April 12, 2018, at 2:00 P.M. in the chapel of Wrenn, Clarke and Hagan Funeral and Cremation Service with Pastor Troy Green officiating.

Burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery.

Jamie Douglas Strickland

Mr. Jamie Douglas Strickland, 37, of Halifax died April 9, 2018 at his home.

Jamie was born in Halifax County on September 9, 1980, to Frankie Odell and Doris Jean Harris Strickland.

He was a 1988 graduate of Northwest High School and a 2011 graduate of HCC, where he obtained his degree as a paralegal. Jamie also worked as a house painter.

He was a loving, dedicated father and best friend to his daughter, Halyn Jean Strickland.

Survivors include his daughter, Halyn Jean; his parents, Frankie and Doris Strickland of Roanoke Rapids; his brother and sister-in-law, Anthony "Tony" Strickland and Wendy of Roanoke Rapids; his fiancee, Lindsay Brianne Barmer of Halifax; as well as cousins, aunts, uncles, and a niece, Kimberly Diane Traverse, of Haw River.

Jamie was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Jesse and Doris Ellen Harris; and his paternal grandparents,Johnnie and Gladys Strickland.

The family will receive friends from 6 - 8 pm Friday at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service.   

The funeral service will be held at 1:00 pm Saturday in the Chapel of Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service, with interment to follow in Crestview Cemetery.

Carolyn Elizabeth Gardner Vaughan, 65, died Wednesday, April 11, 2018, in Halifax Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Vaughan was born in Nash County, April 3, 1953, to the late James Alford and Gladys Rider Gardner.

She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Vaughan was preceded in death by her two brothers, Tommy Alford Gardner and James Earnest Gardner.

Surviving are her husband, Tony Elvis Vaughan of the home; daughter, Teresa Harrell and husband Jay, of Roanoke Rapids; son, Tony Curtis Vaughan and wife, Brandy, of Las Vegas, NV; sisters, Janice Strickland of Roanoke Rapids and Barbara Silver of Enfield; grandchildren, Wil Harrell, Austin Vaughan, Cody Vaughan and Emma Carnell. Also surviving are her very special friends, David and Cathy Tuck.

The family will have a gathering of friends to remember Mrs. Vaughan’s life Saturday, April 14, 2018, at Askew Funeral and Cremation Service in Roanoke Rapids from 4:00pm-6:00pm.
