Inez C. Wheeler

Inez C. Wheeler, 80, passed away Thursday, May 3, 2018, at her home in Roanoke Rapids.

Inez was born September 22, 1937, in Hamilton, Alabama, to the late Oma Lee and Anderson Coons.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Leon Earl Wheeler, Sr.; her brothers, Arnold Coons and Donald Coons; her sister, Mary Jean Coons and her adoptive parents, Rev. Daniel and Mae Hux.

Inez traveled throughout the United States with her husband and family as called on by the Air Force.

Upon her husband’s retirement from the Air Force they settled in Roanoke Rapids as their home.

She was raised in Hamilton, Alabama, until she was 12 years old when her parents passed away and she with other siblings moved to Roanoke Rapids where they lived with Rev. Daniel and Mae Hux.  

Under their guidance she accepted Christ and continued to serve Him throughout her days.

She loved spending time with her sister, Peggy Haskins, as well as a large extended family that would frequently gather to enjoy fellowship, laugh, and remember all the good times they shared.  

Inez was a loving wife and mother that always had much love to give to anyone in need. She contributed to various charities and volunteered in home and foreign missions/ministries at Roanoke Rapids Church of God.

Inez is survived by her children, Earl Wheeler, Jr. and his wife Vicki, James Keith Wheeler and his wife JoAnn Wheeler and Renee Alston and her friend Gerald; her sister, Peggy Haskins and Gene; her grandchildren, Christopher Wheeler and his wife Tiffany, Matthew Wheeler and his wife Stephanie, Lance Wheeler, Jennifer Newsome, Emmie Garner and her husband Glenn, Josh Wheeler, Miranda Wheeler, Ben Wheeler, Sarah Daugherty and her fiancé Emery Cribb, Cole Daugherty, Courtney Harper and Blake Alston; Pat Newsome and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 12:00 P.M. Monday, May 7, 2018, at the Roanoke Rapids Church of God with Rev. Jerry Waters officiating.

Burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 10:30 – 11:30 A.M. at the church prior to the service.

Maggie Nowell Garner

Maggie Nowell Garner 88, of Roanoke Rapids, died Sunday, May 6, 2018, surrounded by her loving family.

Maggie was the daughter of the late Ransome and Ora Monroe Nowell. She was also preceded in death by her husband, John Wesley Garner and her sisters, Mable Daniels and her husband, J.C., Hazel Pay and her husband, Bob and Mary Ann Lee and her husband, Dude; brothers, Herbert Nowell and his wife, Hattie, Wilbur Nowell and his wife, Vivian, Ralph Nowell and his wife, Dorothy, James Nowell and his wife, Bessie, George Nowell and Robert Nowell and his wife, Mary.

She was a charter member of Good News Baptist Church.

Maggie is survived by her daughter, Sheila G. Alford of Roanoke Rapids, two granddaughters, Karen Alford of Roanoke Rapids and Weslee A. Billiter and her husband, Jeff of Rocky Point, NC., two great grandchildren, Brody Billiter and Parker Billiter; her sister-in-laws, Sister Nowell of Weldon, Edith Gay and Elizabeth Walston both of Roanoke Rapids; special best friends, June Willey of Roanoke Rapids, Frank and Kathy Fulcher of Durham and Buck and Bonita Aycock of Red Oak and several nieces and nephews.

Rev. Jimmy King will conduct funeral services at Good News Baptist Church on Wednesday May 9, 2018 at 11:00 a.m.

Interment will follow in the Garner-Medlin Family Cemetery on three Bridges Rd in Roanoke Rapids.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7-8:30 p.m. at Askew Funeral and Cremation Services 731 Roanoke Ave Roanoke Rapids.

Sara Ruth Lynch Purser

Sara Ruth Lynch Purser peacefully departed this world on May 3, 2018.

Her parents, Aaron Watson and Mary Martin Lynch, her husband, William Wesley Purser and two sisters Mary Elizabeth Lynch Hill and Martha Ellen Lynch Lowman, preceded her in death.

Ruth was born on February 14, 1933, in Henrietta, NC.

She was a graduate of Greensboro College.

She was an educator, serving as a full time teacher before becoming a substitute teacher and tutor for many years.

Prior to moving to North Carolina, she served as President of the Junior Woman’s Club in Fort Valley, GA, receiving the Irene Watts Outstanding Club Member Award.

She was also a member of the Gourmet Club of Perry, GA, the Perry Art Club, the Bridge Club, and taught wedding cake decorating on the PBS station.  

She was active in the Episcopal Church while in Georgia and North Carolina.  

While at Saint Mary’s of High Point, she led numerous programs in the church including the Matthew 25:40 Outreach Group, chairing the 100th Anniversary of Saint Mary’s, Youth Group leader, and more.

She was a long-serving board member of the Piedmont School, and received the Governor’s award for Senior Volunteer of the Year for her service.

She also served as a board member of the Urban Ministry and Habitat for Humanity.

Purser was an accomplished oil painter and served as President of the Oak Hollow Square Dance Club.

She was a loving wife, mother and friend to many. She always looked for the best in all people. She laughed a lot, served others constantly and was kind to everyone.

Three sons, Allen Wesley Purser and daughter-in-law Jan Moore Purser, Lee Edward Purser and daughter-in-law Molly Ferris Purser, and Martin Lynch Purser survive her.

All three were Eagle Scouts and college graduates.

She is also survived by four grandchildren: Rebecca Michelle Purser, Katlyn Emily Purser, Sara Katherine Purser and Aaron Thomas Purser, an Eagle Scout, numerous nieces and nephews and a multitude of friends.

A celebration of her life will be held at Saint Mary’s Episcopal Church in High Point, NC at 11am on May 18th.

Edward Randolph Shell

Edward Randolph Shell, 82, of Roanoke Rapids, passed away Friday, May 11, 2018, at Liberty Commons.

Randolph was born October 12, 1935, in Halifax County to the late Herbert Edward Shell and Blanche Neal Shell.

He was also preceded in death by his wife, Grady McNeil Shell.

Randolph was Co-Owner of Shell Electric.

He is survived by his son, Edward Randolph Shell, Jr.  “Randy” of Atlanta, GA; his brother, Tom Shell and his wife Dot of Roanoke Rapids.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, May 15, 2018 in the chapel of Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Service.

Burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7:00 – 9:00 P.M. Monday, May 14, 2108 at the funeral home. The family requests that everyone attend the funeral and visitation in casual attire. Jeans and shorts are acceptable.

Barbara Faye Bohanon Pittman departed this life on Friday, May 11th, 2018, at Vidant Hospital in Greenville, NC, surrounded by her loving family after losing her battle with cancer.

She was 70 years old.

She was born on March 25, 1948, to James and Faye P. Bohanon.

Along with her deep love and care for her family and friends, she loved meeting new friends, traveling and everything Elvis Presley.

Her sweet, precious memory will be forever treasured by her loving daughter, Sandy Ferrell Dixon and her husband Jeffrey; her mother, Faye P. Bohanon; her dear grandchildren, granddaughter, Ashley Collins Bellamy and her husband Brad and her great granddaughter Jerzee Bellamy; and grandson, Charles Cameron Podruchny; her two step granddaughters, Kelly and Caitlyn Dixon; her big brothers, James “Jimmie” Bohannon and D.D. “Bo” Bohanon; two nieces, Tammy Clark and her husband Bob, and Carol Dee Bohanon; two nephews, Michael Bohanon and his wife Kim and daughter Ashlyn, Brian Bohanon and his wife Robin and sons Seth and Carson; her stepdaughter, Towana Blackmon and her husband Michael and her step grandson Chase; her Aunt, Elaine Turner and her husband Robert, her special friend, Rose Grant; and her granddog, “Presley”and many other family and friends.

She was predeceased by her Father, James Bohanon, her late husband Benjamin Pittman and her sister in law, Joyce D. Bohannon.

The family will receive friends from 3:00pm to 5:00pm on Sunday, May 13th, and the memorial service will be held on Monday, May 14th, 2018 at 3:00 pm at  Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service in Roanoke Rapids, NC.

Warren 'Tex' Davis

Warren “Tex” Davis, 76, of Roanoke Rapids, died Monday, May 14, 2018, at his residence.

He was born Aug. 12, 1941, to the late Joe Davis and Marilyn Wheeler Davis.

Along with his deep love and care for his family and friends, he loved the Outer Banks, camping and crossword puzzles. His greatest love was spending time with his grandchildren.

He retired as a dedicated boiler operator after more than 40 years of service from International Paper, now known as KapStone Paper and Packaging.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Priscilla Hux Davis of the home. He is also survived by his three children, Sandra and husband, David Bonomo, Pete and wife, Leslie Davis, and Lori Acree.

He also leaves behind three beautiful grandchildren, Ashlynn Davis and Meagan and Reagan Acree.

Visitation will be held from noon to 1 p.m., followed by a memorial service at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 17, at Wrenn, Clarke & Hagan Funeral and Cremation Service in Roanoke Rapids, which is handling the arrangements.

Shirmon L. Bennett, age 86, of Roanoke Rapids, died Tuesday, May 15, 2018, at Signature Healthcare of Roanoke Rapids.

He was born Dec. 4, 1931 in Greensville County, Va, son of the late Atwell and Florence Bennett.

Shirmon was a retired logger and was a resident of Carolina Rest Home.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Sharon Bennett; sister, Catherine McAdams, brother, Wilson Bennett.

Surviving  are his son, Dennis Keith Bennett (Teresa), of Roanoke Rapids; daughters, Tammie Cooke (Mike), of Portsmouth,Va, Kim Edwards (Glenn), of Roanoke Rapids; sister, Jean Powell, of Richmond, Va; brother, Alton Bennett, of Skippers, Va; special friend, Annetta Casper, of Roanoke Rapids; 7 grandchildren,;5 great grandchildren.

A graveside service with Military honors will be held at 10:00 am Thursday, May 17, 2018, at Greensville Memorial Cemetery, Emporia, Va, with Dr. Dennis W. Gregory Sr. officiating.

The family will receive friends Wednesday evening, May 16, 2018, at Wrenn, Clarke, & Hagan Funeral Home from 7:00 until 8:30.

Patricia “Pat” Henderson Tart of Roanoke Rapids, NC, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, May 15, 2018.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 29 years, James D. Tart; her parents, Ray and Lillian Henderson; her sisters, Phyllis Campbell, Vivian Rikard and her brother Steve Henderson.

“Pat” enjoyed her 32 year employment at The Quality Shop in Roanoke Rapids.

She was active in the community appearing as “Miss Daisy” at Lakeland Theater.

She was instrumental in establishing “The After Five Club” through Stonecraft Ministries and taught the Love Class at Roanoke Baptist Church for many years.

A member of Roanoke Baptist Church for forty four years she loved the Lord and her Church family. She was a true example of a Godly woman and positively influenced people from all walks of life.

She is survived by her daughters, Marlene Lyles and her husband Mike, Lisa Smith and fiancé Dan Williams, son Andy Tart and his wife Rita. Also surviving are “Mama Pat’s” grandchildren, Michelle Imber and husband Chris, Robbie Smith, Robbie Jenkins and his wife, Jessica, Tiffaney Crowe and her husband Jake, Jennifer Wrenn and husband Casey, J.D. Lyles and fiancé Allison Ruble, James Tart and Cassie Lyles and her ten great grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, Rance Henderson and wife Betty, sister, Kay Davis; sister-in-law Mary Henderson and brother-in-law Jerry Rikard.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, May 16, 2018 at Roanoke Baptist Church in Roanoke Rapids from 6:00 until 8:30 P.M. and other times at the home of her daughter Marlene Lyles

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, May 17, 2018 at 1:00 P.M. at Roanoke Baptist Church in Roanoke Rapids with Rev. Rick Rogers

Burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids.

Joseph Green Whitby

Joseph Green Whitby, age 78, of Roanoke Rapids, died Wednesday, May 16, 2018, at his residence.

He was born in Halifax County, son of the late Charlie L. Whitby and Clovene Overton Whitby.  Joseph was retired from the Paper Mill; he was a veteran of the US Army. He attended the Central Baptist Church for 39 years and also attended Tabernacle Baptist Church.

Preceding Joseph in death were his two brothers, Mickey and Raymond Whitby and a half brother, Vann Tanner.

Surviving are his wife, Elaine Abernathy Whitby, of Roanoke Rapids; two daughters, Lesha Michelle Whitby Jordan (Gene), of Roanoke Rapids, Crystal Elaine Whitby Bennett, of Roanoke Rapids; a half brother, Luther “Boots” Tanner Jr.,of Roanoke Rapids; grandchildren, Mason Hunter Green Jordan, Ashton Victoria Jordan, Jessica Danielle Janine Jordan; one great grandchild, Kingslee Waylon Lloyd Dickens.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm Monday, May 21, 2018, in the Chapel of Wrenn, Clarke, & Hagan Funeral and Cremation Service with Rev. Bruce Wayne Marshall and Rev. Steven Tondee officiating.

Charlotte Wanda Ayres Bryant passed away Sunday, May 20, 2018, at her daughter’s home.

Wanda was born November 26, 1939, in Rockbridge County, Virginia, to the late Harry and Effie Ramsey Ayres. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Matthew Bryant; her sisters, Dawn Burch and Norma Staton; her brothers, Daniel and Douglas Ayres.

Wanda was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

She retired from J. P. Stevens after more than 30 years of service.

Wanda is survived by her daughter, Tammy Fahey and her husband Chris; her son, Timmy Bryant and his wife Christine; her granddaughter, Dana McCoy and her husband Josh; her grandson, Matt Fahey and Natalie France; her great-granddaughter, Leighton Fahey and her great-grandson, Liam McCoy all of Roanoke Rapids; her brothers-in-law, Houston Staton and Larry Burch; her sister-in-law Teresa Ayres and her brother, Ronnie Ayres.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, May 23, 2018 in the chapel of Hockaday funeral and Cremation service with Rev. Wayne Marshall officiating.

Burial will follow in Crestview Memorial Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 12:30 – 1:30 P.M. Wednesday prior to the service and other times at the home of her daughter.

Wilson Augustus Miles

Wilson Augustus Miles passed from his earthly to his heavenly home on Thursday, May 24, 2018, surrounded by his loving family. He was 89 years old.

A Halifax County native, he was born January 30, 1929. Wilson served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

He was an avid outdoorsman and was known to his community, hunting club, family as “Treeclimber.”

Wilson worked for and retired from Roanoke Construction Company.

Wilson was a dedicated son, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ellis Wilson Miles and Betty Brown Miles, two brothers Raymond and Douglas Miles, one sister, Josie M. Pruden, one granddaughter, Courtney Wynn Pittman, sister in law, Doris Miles and brother in laws, Nelson Pruden, Pete Luter and Robert Williams.

He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Lois F. Miles; children and spouses, Wilson Miles Jr (Pia), Tony Miles (Debbie), Wanda Miles (Gary) and Linda Aycock (Wayne);n grandchildren Devon Miles, Scott Miles, Wynn Beale, Carrigan Harris, Alexander Sherman, Gabrielle Sherman; great-grandchildren, Amber Shadrick, Ava Lewis and Samuel Miles;n Brothers and sisters, Morene M. Little (Bobby), Nora M. Warren (E.C.), Mary M. Williamsn (Robert), Emily M. Luter (Pete), Ellis W. Miles (Ethel), Dorothy M. Ennis (Jim), Charles Miles (Jonnie), Donald Miles (Rachel), Betty Clary (David); numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Maxine Hood McElwee, age 88, of Roanoke Rapids, died Saturday, May 19, 2018, at Halifax Regional Medical Center.

She was born in Halifax County, daughter of the late Walter Hood and Mary McDonald Hood. She worked in the retail industry for many years.

Preceding Maxine in death were one son, Danny McElwee; brother, Everett Haslip; sister, Brenda Bisbing; grandsons Baby Arthur McElwee and Larry Tanner, Jr.

She is survived by her sons, Eddie McElwee, of Scranton, PA, Ricky McElwee, of Chester, PA, Jeff McElwee, of Clayton, SC; daughters, Judy Reckeagel, of Chester, PA, Debbie Liles, Cathy Spence, Tammy Watson, Michelle Banty, all of Roanoke Rapids, Shirley McElwee, of Dallas, Texas; brother, Johnny Haslip, of Virginia; sister, Mary “Tad” Vargas; 24 grandchildren, many great grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at 2:00 pm Saturday, May 26, 2018 at Cedarwood Cemetery with Rev. Randy Martin officiating.

Johanna Hildegard (Hilde) Outland, 90, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, May 23, 2018, in her home.  

Hilde first came to Roanoke Rapids in 1948, living here on and off three different times for a total of 45 years.

Since 2012, she has resided in Triangle, VA, with her daughter and family.

Hilde was preceded in death by her parents, Johannes and Katrina Meisel, and two sisters, Erna Neumer and Lotte Lauterbach,all of Kulmbach,Germany, her husband, the Rev. Donald H. Outland, of Roanoke Rapids, and her older daughter, Dana Outland Bray, of Roanoke Rapids.

She is survived by a daughter, Paula Outland Paddock, of Triangle, VA, and two sons–in-law, Keith Paddock of Triangle, VA, and Jim Bray, of Hickory, NC. She is also survived by six grandchildren: the Rev. John Bray and wife, Jennifer, of Cyprus, TX; Stephen Bray and wife, Sherry, of Vanduser, MO; Sarah Bray, of Greenville, SC; Katrina, Heidi, and Christianna Paddock, of Triangle, VA. In addition, she has four great-grandchildren: Hannah, David, Charis, and Paton Bray, of Cyprus, TX; and several nieces and nephews of Germany and Roanoke Rapids.

A Graveside ceremony will take place at Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids at 11:30 AM on Wednesday, May 30 2018 with her grandson Rev. John Bray officiating.

The “Celebration of Home-going” Memorial Service will be held at Engleside Baptist Church in Alexandria, VA, on Friday, June 1, 2018. The Rev. John Bray, grandson, will preside at both services.

Martha Elizabeth Williams Weaver, 85, of Roanoke Rapids, died Thursday, May 24, 2018, at her home.

Mrs. Weaver, a native of Halifax County, was born, May 1, 1933, to the late Archie W. and Ola Mae Gaither Williams.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Weaver was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Weaver; son, David Earl Weaver and her daughter, Gail W. Fox.

Surviving are her daughter, Linda Rainey and husband, Tom, of Fairview, NC; son, Joseph A. Weaver, Sr. of Roanoke Rapids; sister, Eunice Powell of Roanoke Rapids; grandchildren, Jennifer Wood Hudson and husband, James, of Aurelian Springs and Joseph A. Weaver, Jr. and wife, Meredith of Asheville, NC, and a great grandchild, Cody M. Wood.  Also surviving are her loving and resilient caregiver, Bettie Lynch and several nieces and nephews.

Rev. Craig Gaither will conduct a graveside service Sunday, May 27, 2018, at 2:00 pm in Community Center Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will welcome friends after the service at the home.
