Arthur Lee Wollett Sr.

Arthur Lee Wollett, 84, died Saturday, October 14, 2017, at Universal Healthcare/North Raleigh. Arthur was born in Halifax County, November 12, 1932, to the late Henry and Maude Alston Wollett.

He was a veteran and proudly served his country with the United States Army.

Arthur was preceded in death by his brother Bob Wollett of Lynchburg, VA, and sister Camille Boseman of Halifax County, NC.

Surviving are his wife, Carolyn Crawley Wollett of the home; daughter Kim Abshire and husband, Kip; son, Art Wollett, Jr. and wife, Lou Ann, both of Wake Forest; grandchildren, Kameron Abshire and wife, Melissa, Kari Cross and husband, Braxton, Koy Dillard and husband, Trey, Kyle Abshire and wife, Jessica, Kristopher Abshire and fiancée, Hannah, Sarah Midgette and husband, Justin, Aaron Wollett, Zachary Wollett, Christian Wollett, and Arthur Lee Wollett, III (Trace). Also surviving are his great grandchildren, Michaela and Henry Abshire, Paityn and Paige Cross, Anna and Parker Dillard, Elijah and Grace Abshire, and Everly Midgette.

Rev. Roy Porter will conduct funeral services at Harris Chapel Baptist Church Wednesday, October 18, 2017 at 2:00 pm.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to service beginning at 1:00 pm also at the church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Betty  Briggs, 77, of Enfield, died Sunday, October 15, 2017, at her home surrounded by her loving family.

Betty was born in Columbia, SC, and was the daughter of the late Darnell B. and  Howard T. Hornsby, Sr.

She loved quilting and spent almost every day at her sewing machine. She made quilts for the Veteran’s hospital and the Ronald McDonald House.

Betty is survived by her husband of 41 years, John Alfred Briggs of the home, her son James Christopher Vaughan and his wife, Cristel, of Roanoke Rapids, her daughters, April Vaughan McKee and her husband Steve of Nashville, NC and Kim Briggs Mann and her husband, Gary of Raleigh, her sisters, Linda B. Whitfield and her husband, Marvin of Fairmont, Ga., Deborah B. Murphy and her husband, Scott of Niceville, FL., Carol B. Smith of Darlington, her brother, Howard T. Hornsby, Jr of Lafayette, Ga., five granddaughters, Allison McKee Askew, Christina Vaughan, Jaci Vaughan, Karly Mann, and Kelly Mann, three great-grandchildren, Riley Askew, Londyn Askew and Ryker Askew.

Funeral Services will be held Wednesday at 2 P.M. in the Chapel of Askew Funeral and Cremation Services in Roanoke Rapids with Rev Susan Joyce officiating.

Interment will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids.

The Family will receive friends Tuesday from 7-8:30 at the Funeral Home 731 Roanoke Ave Roanoke Rapids, NC.

Patricia Walters Brown, 72, of Charles City, passed away on Thursday, October 12, 2017.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Leonard and Linda Walters. Patricia was a member of Hardy Central Baptist Church.

Left to cherish her memory are her children, Linda Bowen, Kevin Renn (Teresa) and Joshua Brown; 12 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, four sisters, three brothers, several nieces and nephews; and her special friend, Alfred Loving.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, October 17, at Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave., Richmond, Va. 23231.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, at Hardy Central Baptist Church, 4655 Darbytown Rd., Henrico, Va. 23231.

Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Mary Elizabeth “Betty” Millen, 73, died Wednesday, October 18, 2017, at Nash UNC Hospital in Rocky Mount.

Betty was born in Halifax County, November 17, 1943, to the late James L. and Adele Davis Wood. 

She was a long-time member of Little Country Baptist Church and a loving mother and grandmother. 

In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her husband, James Robert “Bob” Millen.

Surviving are her son, Christopher “Kris” E. Kling and wife Darlene of Roanoke Rapids and her grandchildren, Erika Jordan Kling and Ronnie Wayne Sanderson.

Rev. James Jenkins will conduct a graveside service Sunday, October 22, 2017, in Cedarwood Cemetery at 2:00 pm. 

The family will receive friends at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service prior to graveside services from 12:30-1:30 pm.

Alan August Martini, 72, of Roanoke Rapids, NC, died Wednesday, October 18, 2017, at his residence.

Alan was born in Green County, WI, the son of the late August and Eileen Elmer Martini. Alan spent his working life in Wisconsin farming, after moving to Roanoke Rapids, he was employed with the Roanoke Rapids Graded  School District.

He is survived by: his wife Lynne Reasa Martini; a daughter, Lana R. King and her husband David, of Roanoke Rapids, NC; a Son Dale A. Martini and his wife Elizabeth, of Wake Forest, NC; a sister, Mary Martini, of Yuma, AZ; a brother Ron Martini and his wife Karen, of Monroe, WI; four grandchildren, Caleb Horn and Carter Horn of Roanoke Rapids, NC, Noah Martini and Charlotte Martini of Wake Forest, NC.

A memorial service will be held at First United Methodist Church, 339 Roanoke Ave., Roanoke Rapids, NC, Saturday, October 21, 2017, at 11:00 AM, with Rev. Wanda Ogden, officiating.

Turner Person Jones, age 101, of Gaston NC, died Thursday, October 19, 2017, in Rocky Mount, NC.

He was born in Johnston County, son of the late Ezekial and Alona Jones. Mr. Jones was retired from the Town of Gaston as Water and Street Superintendent. He was a member of Gaston Baptist Church.

Mr. Jones was preceded in death by his wife, Edna Norris Jones; a son, Earl Jones; infant daughter, Shirley Faye Jones; brothers, Roland and Obie Jones; sister, Alice Butler.

Surviving are two sons, Wayne Jones (Janice), of Roanoke Rapids, Gary Jones (Significant other, Tammy), of Conway,NC; two daughters, Deanie J. Manning (Henry), of Gaston, Glenda J. Rowland (Joe), of Roanoke Rapids; 15 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, 1 great great grandchild; special caregiver, Laura Thompson.

The family extends a special thank you to the staff of Pruitt Home Health and Hospice.

Funeral Services will be held at 4:00 pm Sunday, October 22, 2017, in the Chapel of Wrenn, Clarke and Hagan Funeral Home with Rev. Julian Mills and Rev. Tim Andrews  officiating. Burial will follow in Old Cedarwood Cemetery.

Joanne Terry Gibson, 64, of Littleton, NC, died Wednesday, October 18, 2017, at her residence. 

Joanne was born in Danville, VA, the daughter of the late Winfred P. Terry and Louise Slayton Terry. 

She graduated from North Carolina State University, in 1991 and was a Certified Public Accountant with Clifton, Larson, Allen.

She is survived by: her husband Michael Dale Gibson; a brother, Jay Howard Terry, of Danville, VA, and a nephew, Patrick Jay Terry of Danville, VA.

Funeral services will be conducted Monday, October 23, 2017, at 3:00 PM, at Enterprise Baptist Church, 404 Enterprise Road, Littleton, NC, with Dr. Darren Lambert and Dr. Michael Cloer, officiating. 

The family will receive at the church from 1:30 PM until 3:00 PM.

A graveside service will be held Tuesday, October 24, 2017, at 11:30 AM, at Highland Burial Park, 3049 North Main Street, Danville, VA.

Linda Ann Brown Morris, 64, passed away Friday, October 20, 2017.

Linda was born July 31, 1953 in Halifax County to the late Wade Horne and Vernie Davis Horne. She was also preceded in death by her son, Gary Steven Wicker; by her sister, Judy; her brother, Richard.

She was a most caring mother and nana, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend who will be truly missed.

Linda is survived by her son, Steve Brown and his wife Barbee of Greensboro; her daughter, Amanda Brown and her husband Michael Judge of Roanoke Rapids; her fiancé, Keith Boyd of Boydton, VA; her grandchildren, Tori, Brittany, Aliyah, Wesley, Rob and Paislee; her great-grandchildren, Kaedence and Cole; her brothers, James, Kelly, Mike and Ronnie; her sisters, Helen, Jane, Janet, Sharon and Susan; many nieces and nephews; very special best friend, Connie.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Monday, October 23, 2017 in the chapel of Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Service. Burial will follow in the Macon Price Cemetery in Gaston. The family will receive friends from 5:00 – 7:00 P.M. Sunday at the funeral home and other times at the home of her daughter, 412 East 3rd Street, Roanoke Rapids.

Pamela P. Salmon, age 49, of Roanoke Rapids, NC, died Friday, October 20, 2017, at Wake Medical Center, Raleigh, NC. 

She was born in Halifax County, daughter of the late Milton and Barbara Taylor. 

Mrs. Salmon was a registered nurse, working for Halifax Regional Medical Center for many years.

She is preceded in death by a sister, Sandra Pernell.

Surviving are her husband, Earl Salmon, of Roanoke Rapids; father, Richard Pernell (Susan), of Virginia; two daughters, Jennifer Glasgow (Buck), Brittany Gregory (Fiancee,Cory Butler), all of Roanoke Rapids; brother, Richard Earl Pernell,Jr , of West Virginia; sisters, Belinda Taylor, of Roanoke Rapids, Peggy Pernell, Suzette Floyd, Susan Ann Clark, all of Virginia; grandchildren, Noah, Dean, and Piper Glasgow, Bryson and Ainsley Butler.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm Wednesday, October 25, 2017, in the Chapel of Wrenn, Clarke, & Hagan Funeral Home with Dr. Dennis W. Gregory,Sr. officiating. Burial will follow in New Cedarwood Cemetery.

Nancy Ann Womble Crocker

Nancy was born and raised in Chatham County, North Carolina.  She was the second child born to George Moody Womble and Maud Odell Hearn Womble of the New Elam Church Community, Chatham County N.C. In 1953, Nancy married Dean Stanley Crocker, Jr. and moved to Seaboard, N.C. where she resided until recent years. 

Nancy was preceded in death by her husband, Stanley in 1970, her mother and father, Nancy's older sister, Rubye W. Scott and husband Scotty, Nancy's brother, George C. Womble and spouse, Treva. Also, sister-in-law Garnette Crocker Tuten and husband, Sam, and brother-in-law L. M. Stevens.  

She was a woman of faith, dignity, determination, fun, and humor. Nancy had a strong ability to persevere in adversity. Nancy was involved in many church and community activities and organizations. She was a sincere friend and neighbor willing to share her hospitality, kindness, and time to all.

Nancy is survived by her daughters, Mary Dean Crocker Oliver and husband Keith; Nancy Anne Crocker Tillery and husband Jim; three grandchildren Laura D. Oliver, Corey B. Oliver, and Todd D. Bowman; and survived by one sister, Dorothy W. Stevens of Cameron, N.C. Many special nieces and nephews, each one of them special to their Aunt Nancy.

The family is appreciative of the special devotion, care, and love provided by Magnolia Gardens caregivers and staff.

Arrangements are being handled by Wrenn Clarke and Hagan Funeral Home with visitation at their facility Wednesday, October 25, 2017 from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m.  Graveside services will be held Thursday October 26, 11:00 a.m., Town of Seaboard Cemetery, services will be conducted by Rev. Steve McElroy.

Charlotte Smith Wheeler, 76, of Jackson died Saturday October 28, 2017.

Charlotte, a native of Northampton County, was the daughter of the late Frank Norfleet and Nettie Jenkins Smith. She was also preceded in death by her son, William “Bill” Wheeler, her sister, Regina Dickens, and two brothers, Mark and Carroll Smith.

Charlotte was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She was a long time member of Jackson Baptist Church where she was the treasurer for many years.

She is survived by her husband, Otis Wheeler, her daughters, Angie Wheeler and her fiancée’ Jeffrey Blanton of Jackson and Nettie W. Edwards of Roanoke Rapids; five grandchildren, Chad Wheeler, Hunter Wheeler, Trevor Edwards, Babriel Wheeler and Colby Edwards; her sister, Dezma Medlin of Florida, her brother Gerald Smith and his wife Betty of Trenton, Ga., and several Nieces and Nephews.

A Memorial service will be held Thursday, November 2, 2017, at 2 P.M. at the Jackson Baptist Church with Rev. Jim Cox and Rev. Warren Heitzenrater officiating.

Interment will follow in the Jackson Cemetery.

Henry Earl “Pete” Hall of Gaston, NC, on October 28, 2017 went home to be with his lord and savior Jesus Christ surrounded by his family.

He was born on, April 26, 1951, in Roanoke Rapids, NC, son of the late Grover Lee Hall and Helen Dora Jones Hall of Gaston.

Henry was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. 

He was baptized Jan. 4, 1998, at Lakeview Park Baptist Church. 

He loved spending times with family, playing the piano and guitar at church, working hard to take care of his family and talking to people about the lord and being saved.

He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of 46 years, Myrtis Ann Taylor Hall of the home; his daughter, Elizabeth Ann “Liz” Moore  (Timothy) of LaCrosse VA; his son, Danny Earl Hall (Monica) of Roanoke Rapids; his sister, Margaret Lassiter (Johnny) of Roanoke Rapids;  his brother Richard Hall (Pam) of Gaston; grandsons, Michael Moore (fiancé Keisha) , James Moore of LaCrosse, VA, Quintin “D.J.” and Brenden Hall of Roanoke Rapids;  great granddaughter, My’Asiya  Moore, of LaCrosse VA and many in laws, cousins, nephews, nieces, friends and church family. 

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, his sister, Gwendolyn Jane Rook, his brother Eddie Lee Hall and numerous other relatives.

The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses, nurse Michael and staff of Duke Raleigh Hospital, our family, friends, and church family for their patience, kindness, prayers, and support. It has meant the world to us to have each of you in our lives and during this time.

Visitation will be Tuesday, October 31, 2017 at Wrenn Clarke & Hagan Funeral Home from 6:30 -8:30 pm and other times at the home of Myrtis Hall.

Lucille Rook Dickens, age 96, of Roanoke Rapids, died Tuesday, October 31, 2017.

She was born in Hopewell, Virginia,and attended Women’s College, Greensboro, NC (now- UNC -G). 

She was a member of First United Methodist Church, where, when she was 7 or 8 years old, she walked to the Church by herself and placed her membership. She remained active in the Church all he life serving in many capacities on numerous committees.

Mrs. Dickens won a state championship in High School for shorthand and typing.

She began her career with the Roanoke Rapids Graded School System as a secretary and earned a position as Finance Officer. 

She worked in the school system for more than 30 years. During her leisure time Mrs. Dickens enjoyed knitting and crocheting. She served as a volunteer with Health Link.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Howard Dickens, grandson, Lorin Harrington, two brothers, Wade and Clifton Rook; sister, Gladys Rook Ogburn.

Surviving are her son, Charles Dickens, of Roanoke Rapids; daughter, Angie D. Merritt (Marshall), of Roanoke Rapids; grandchildren, Geoff Harrington(Rachel), Thomas and Christopher Dickens; great grandchildren, Ginger and Bradley Harrington.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 pm Thursday, November 2, 2017, at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Cory Oliver officiating. Burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery. 

The family will receive friends at the Church one hour prior to the service. 

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church or the Union Mission.

Helen Nicholson Hargrave, 87, of Roanoke Rapids, died Tuesday, October 31, 2017, at Halifax Regional Medical Center.

She was born in Halifax County, daughter of the late James G. Nicholson and Lucy Beale Nicholson. Mrs. Hargrave  was a member of Rosemary  Baptist Church. She served many years as a volunteer at Halifax Regional Medical Center where she worked in the coffee shop.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Clyde W. Hargrave, Sr.; brothers, James Grant Nicholson,Jr, Ray Nicholson, Carlon W. Nicholson, Robert “Bobby” Nicholson, Thomas Nicholson; sister, Priscilla Black.

Mrs. Hargrave is survived by her son, Clyde W. Hargrave Jr, (Pam), of Kitty Hawk, NC; two daughters, Shirley Hargrave Allen (Johnny), of Roanoke Rapids, Susan Hargrave Larkins (Al), of Rocky Mount, NC; grandchildren, Jennifer Allen Pinyan (Steve), of Rocky Mount, NC, John M. Allen,III, of Roanoke Rapids, Seth D. Hargrave (Heather), of Willow Spring, NC, Nicole B. Barney Lee Jones

Barney Lee Jones, 90, of Regency Drive in Nashville, formerly of Roanoke Rapids, passed away Friday, November 3, 2017, at home.

Barney was born June 6, 1927, in Bossier Parrish, La, to the late Levi Jones and Orilla Holland Jones. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Marie Jones Kelch; his brother, Benjamin Jones; and his son-in-law, P.J. Burnsworth.

He was a devoted family man who loved his family. He also loved bass fishing.

Barney is survived by his loving wife, Reva Barnett Jones of the home; his children, Roy Jones of Roanoke Rapids, Ashley Jones and his wife Ann of Durham, Patricia Holloman and her husband Vic of Nashville, Kenneth Jones and his wife Rosemary of Roanoke Rapids, Diane Barnsworth of Uniontown, PA and Gail Porter and her husband Steve of Roanoke Rapids; eleven grandchildren; twenty-one great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild; his sisters-in-law Carol Williams and Martha Hartsoe; a special extended family member, Sandra Griffin; numerous nieces and nephews; and a special thanks to the staff of Kindred Hospice and especially Angela Bridgers and Allison Banszak for their love and caring attention.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Monday, November 6, 2017, at Cedarwood Cemetery in Weldon with Rev. Jerry Waters officiating.

Mabel Christine Cox Harrison

Mabel Christine Cox Harrison 90, of Rocky Mount died Saturday November 4, 2017.

She was born in Roanoke Rapids to the late Eddie Paul and Fannie Doyle Cox.  She was also preceded in death by her husband, brother and her beloved granddaughter, Ann-Elizabeth Doyle Brown.

After attending Cosmetology College in Raleigh she moved back to Roanoke Rapids where she owned and operated Chris’s Hair Styling on east 10th street until her retirement at the age of 73.

She was a lifelong member of First Christian Church in Roanoke Rapids.

Christine moved to Rocky Mount in October 2012 to live near her daughter and family. She was cared for and loved by the people of Breckenridge Assisted living center until her death there earlier this week.

She leaves to cherish her memory her daughter, Cora Brown and her husband, John W. Brown, III of Rocky Mount; her grandson John-Paul W. Brown and his wife, Fahlon of Nashville, NC and her granddaughter Rebekah F. Brown of Charlotte and her nephew Eddie Cox of Titusville, Florida.

Graveside services will be held Tuesday November 7, 2017 at 3 P.M. in the Brown family cemetery at the home with Dr Rob Westlund officiating.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 2-3 P.M. at the Home.

Arrangements are being handled by Askew Funeral and Cremation Services 731 Roanoke Ave Roanoke Rapids.

Kenneth Beauford Robinson

Kenneth “Kenny” Beauford Robinson, 68, of Hwy 48, Roanoke Rapids passed away Saturday, November 4, 2017 at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill.

Kenny was born in Mooresville, NC on May 22, 1949 to Bill and Elsie Huffman Robinson.  He is preceded in death by his father, Bill Robinson; two sons, Kevin and Jeffrey Robinson; his grandson, Brian Bradley.

His favorite pastime was watching episodes of Gunsmoke and Bonanza.

Kenny is survived by his mother, Elsie Robinson; his daughters, Tammy Bradley and husband Dennis, Renee Bradley and fiancé Barney Ashworth, Lara Ann Lassiter and husband Jason, and twin daughters, Lynn Ohlinger and Laura Beebe; his son, Michael “Bennie” Davis; a special grandson Mathew Liles; eight more grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; his brothers, Carl Robinson and wife JoAnn and Mitchell Robinson and wife Wannapha.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 P.M. Wednesday, November 8, 2017 in the chapel of Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Service with Preacher Steven Tondee officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:30 – 2:30 prior to the service.  Burial will follow in Crestview Memorial Cemetery.

Jake C. Cannon, age 78, of Gaston, NC, died Saturday, November 4, 2017, at his residence.

He was born in Mecklenburg County, Virginia, son of the late Josephus and Edith Cannon. Jake was the owner/operator of Jake’s Garage in Gaston. He formerly served in the US Army.

Surviving are his wife, Georgia K. Cannon, of Gaston; son, Douglas Cannon(Belinda), of Alberta, VA; daughters, Carolyn Mangan (Tim), of Roxboro, NC, Tammy Arwood (Will),  Angela Hicks, all of Roanoke Rapids; stepdaughter, Cathy P. Alston Papouloglou, of Fayetteville, NC; stepson, Theodore N. Papouloglou, of Gaston,NC; brothers, Charles Cannon(Judy) ,of Littleton,NC, Richard Cannon(Julia), of Danville, VA; sister, Ethel Harris, of Roanoke Rapids; eight grandchildren; three step grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 am Wednesday, November 8, 2017, at Cedarwood Cemetery with Dr. Dennis W. Gregory, Sr. officiating. 

Wrenn, Clarke, & Hagan Funeral and Cremation Service is taking care of arrangements where the family will receive friends this evening, Tuesday, November 7, 2017, from 7:00 until 8:30.
