Ervin Marshall 'Shorty' Lee

Ervin Marshall “Shorty” Lee, 72, of Roanoke Rapids passed away Sunday, September 24, 2017, at Liberty Commons in Weldon.

Mr. Lee was born July 16, 1945, in Halifax County to the late Henry Edward Lee and Jenny Wood Lee. He was also preceded in death by his daughter, Emma Jean Lee; his grandson, T.J. Nelson.

He was a member of First Baptist Church. He loved fishing, NASCAR, music and helping with the Eagles Club. He retired from J. P. Stevens and Bibb Company with over thirty years of service.

Shorty is survived by his daughter, Jennifer Lee and her fiancé Douglas Keeter, III and his children, Douglas Keeter, IV and Caimen Keeter; his sister, Carolyn Carter and her husband Roy all of Roanoke Rapids; his nephew, Kenny Ray and his wife Tammy; his great nieces, Ashley Casey and Tiffany Ray; his special friend Rosie.

The family would like to give special thanks to the nurses, Kitchen staff and Housekeeping staff at Liberty Commons and Cindy Elam.

Graveside services will be held 1:00 P.M. Wednesday, September 27, 2017 at Cedarwood Cemetery with Rev. Michael Little officiating. The family will receive friends from 11:00 – 12:30 P.M. Wednesday at Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Service and other times at the home of his daughter, 503 West 4th Street, Roanoke Rapids.

Glenyce Merritt Haigler

Glenyce Merritt Haigler, 70, of Roanoke Rapids passed away on Friday, September 22, 2017.

She was the daughter of the late William Dallas and Beulah Blondie Cross Merritt.

Glenyce was a member of First Christian Church. She also had been with Ralph’s Barbecue since 1984.

Glenyce is survived by her three sons, Jay Haigler of Roanoke Rapids, NC, Brandon Haigler of St. Petersburg, Fl, and Houston Haigler of Roanoke Rapids, NC; her niece, Tracy Haigler Carter of Cary, NC; her special cousins, Kim Amerson and her husband, Bill, of Roanoke Rapids, NC, Christina Cross of Chicago, IL, Gavin Woodruff and his wife, Melissa, and many other Cousins and Special Friends.

Memorial Services will be held on Friday, September 30, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at First Christian Church with Minister Bane Angles officiating.

Interment will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery.

The family will receive friends on Thursday September 29, 2017 from 6:30 until 8:00 p.m. at Askew Funeral & Cremation Services of Roanoke Rapids, NC.

Delores Jane Peele

Delores Jane Peele, 60, died at her home Sunday, September 24, 2017.

Delores was born in Suffolk, VA, December 23, 1956, to the late Otto and Mary Carpenter Asbell. 

She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who loved her family. In addition to her parents, Delores was preceded in death by her husband, Michael Gene Peele and brother, Rusty Asbell. 

Surviving are her daughters, Deborah Mays and husband, Michael, Kitty Parker, Cynthia June Cook and husband, “Fred” Cook, all of Roanoke Rapids; brother, Timothy Asbell and wife, Virginia, of Faber, VA; sisters, Ann Thomas and husband, Phillip, of Chuckatuck, VA, and Sheila Smith of Elizabeth City, NC; grandchildren, Timothy Roger Shearin, Jr., Harley Renee Shearin, Dallas Wayne Walton, Emily Morgan Shearin, Austin Gene Walton, Briana Mays, Toma’s Mays, ones she loved like her grandchildren: Braxton Harrell, Tyler Garner and Morgan Walker; great grandchildren, Kolson Michael Shearin, Sophia Lula-Paige Epps, Braylin Scott Johnson, and “one on the way,” Baleigh Jane-Lynn Edwards. Also surviving are her dog, Paco, special friend, Elaine Cummings and several nieces and nephews.

Rev. Randy Martin will conduct a service remembering Delores’ life, Saturday, September 30, 2017, in the chapel at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service at 11:00 am. The family will also receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to service beginning at 10:00 am.

The family has suggested memorial contributions be made to: UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, External Affairs Office, UNC-CH CB# 7295, Chapel Hill, NC 27599-7295.

Norma Jean Wall Barlowe, 83 years young, died Tuesday, September 26, 2017, at Halifax Regional Medical Center. 

Norma was born in Halifax County, June 5, 1934, to the late Chester and Leacy Wall. 

In addition to her parents, Norma was preceded in death by six brothers and one sister.

Surviving are her husband of 63 years, Marvin G. Barlowe; children, Curtis Barlowe and wife, Susan, Gerald Barlowe and wife, Joan, and Judy Barlowe; grandchildren, Benjamin Jay Barlowe and wife, Katelynn, Patricia Jean Barlowe, Eva Lee Barlowe, Ashley Lane, Jordan Lane and wife, Ashley, Brittaney Dieppa and husband, Pablo Dieppa. Also surviving are her great grandchildren, Flora Belle Barlowe, Theodore Jay Barlowe, Adyson Spencer, Aubrie Dieppa, Finnlie Grace Lane and Brooklyn Lane. 

Pastors Randy Martin and Jeremy Kobernat will conduct a memorial service Saturday, September 30, 2017 at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service at 3:00 pm. 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to service beginning at 2:00 pm.

Geneva  Jewel 'Jo' Crawley

Geneva  Jewel “Jo” Crawley, 89, passed away peacefully Wednesday, September 27, 2017 at her home.

She was born October 28, 1927, in Halifax County to the late Olin Crawley and Jessica Dickens Crawley. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Sebastian Cabot Crawley, Jr.; her son Hugh Cabot Crawley; her grandson, John Sebastian Crawley.

Jo was a devoted wife who dearly loved her husband and her number 1 priority was her family. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. 

She made her home a place you could go to and feel welcome, safe and loved. Most times you would find her in the kitchen and the conversations held around the table make up some of our fondest memories. 

She was a homemaker in every sense of the word and she built her home with a gentle hand, a warm heart, a sweet smile and a whole lot of love.

She is survived by her children, Ron Crawley and his wife Jean of Mount Dora, FL, JoEllen Williams and her husband Kirk of Sanford, FL, Jeff “Bear” Crawley and his wife Bobbie of Roanoke Rapids; her grandchildren, Cabot “Pete” Crawley and his wife Crystal of Aurelian Springs, Chris Crawley and his wife Heidi,  Gabe Crawley, Lance Crawley, Brad Crawley, Steve Hall and his wife Sierra and Robin Hall; sixteen great-grandchildren; and special caregivers Ms. Mary, Jessica Crawley and Kali Shaw.

Graveside services will be held at 3:00 P.M. Sunday, October 1, 2017 at Crestview Memorial Cemetery with Rev. Andy Sloan officiating.  The family will receive friends at Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Service from 1:00 – 2:30 P.M. prior to the service and other times at the home.

Louise Burton Gorham Jones

Louise Burton Gorham Jones, 88, of Roanoke Rapids, passed away on Wednesday September 27, 2017.

Louise was a member of Rosemary United Methodist Church for 46 years and a member of Battleboro Methodist Church for 40 years. 

She was employed with the City of Roanoke Rapids and with RBC Centura Bank in Rocky Mount. 

Louise was preceded in death by her mother Katie Mae Moss Cooke, her father Thomas Ballard Cook, her infant daughter, Katherine, her sister Julia Cooke Pullen, and her husbands William R. “Billy” Burton and Thomas Marshall Gorham. 

She is survived by her daughter Kathy Boseman (Wayne), her son William R. “Bill” Burton, her brother David Thomas Cooke (Julie).  Her grandchildren Aleisha Pearcey (Bubba), Allison Coleman, Ashley Boseman (Thomas), Andrea Padron (Jerry).  Great-grandchildren Jaime Pearcey (Zack), Alexis Pearcey, Jay Coleman, Jasmine Coleman, Leanna Carroll, Eldon Padron.  Great-great-grandchildren Aden and Noah. Her lifelong friends Mary Ann Jones and Louise “Twiddy” Woodroof. 

Louise had a special angel/caregiver Peggy Fajna.

A special thanks to Community Home Care and Hospice of Roanoke Rapids and her sitters: Peggy Fajna, Melody Hux, Sheryl Dickens, Dru Porch, Gail Endicott, Cathy Allen, Raven Bullock-Barnes, Tammy Moseley, Glenda Lloyd, Kelly Pate, Pam Martin, Rose Adams and Dee Dee Ricks.

Arrangements are being handled by Hockaday Funeral Home and visitation will be Tuesday October 3, 2017 from 7:00pm to 9:00pm and also a visitation on Wednesday October 4, 2017 from 2:00pm to 3:00pm; funeral will follow at 3:00 in the Chapel at Hockaday Funeral home with Reverend Lloyd Long and Chaplin Roy Porter. 

Burial will follow at Cedarwood Cemetery. 

Memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer’s Charity or Community Home Care and Hospice of Roanoke Rapids.

Walter “Danny” Daniel Rook, Jr., 71, of Emporia, VA, died Saturday, September 30, 2017, at his residence.

Danny was born in Roanoke Rapids, NC the son of the late Walter Daniel “Simon” Rook, Sr. He was a retired employee of George-Pacific, Emporia, VA. 

He was active in his community serving on the Greensville County School Board, Industrial Development Association and the Greensville-Emporia Airport Commission. 

An avid deer hunter, he enjoyed his membership in the Brink Hunt Club.

Surviving are: his wife, Doris Williams Rook; Mother Alberta Jones Rook of Emporia, VA; three sons, Jason D. Rook and his wife Rhonda of Emporia, VA, Christopher W. Rook and his wife Lauren of Jarratt, VA, and Daniel Kyle Rook of Emporia, VA; a sister, Patsy R. Brown and her husband Lee of Emporia, VA, two grandchildren, Joshua D. Rook and Emma L. Rook both of Emporia, VA.

The family will receive at Wrenn Clarke & Hagan Funeral and Cremation Service, 1015 W.  5th Street, Roanoke Rapids, NC, Tuesday, October 3, 2017, from 7:00 to 8:30 PM.

Funeral services will be held at Forest Hill Baptist Church, 2103 Pine Log Road, Skippers, VA  23879, on Wednesday, October 4, 2017, at 2:00 PM, with Rev. Rick Ragan officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

William 'Bill' Worley Shelton

William “Bill” Worley Shelton, 90, died Saturday, September 30, 2017, at Greensville Health and Rehabilitation Center, Emporia.

Bill was born in Madison County, NC, January 15, 1927, to the late Henry and Dora Edmonds Shelton. 

He was a retired veteran having served with the United States Navy and had tours in World War II, the Korean Conflict and Vietnam. 

After retiring from the Navy, he worked and retired with Civil Service. 

He loved the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing, as well as, gardening and working in his yard. 

In addition to God and country, Bill loved his family, who was very important in his life.  In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his wife, Mirian Shelton and brothers, Mack, Jimmy and Jack Shelton. 

Surviving are his daughter, Linda Shelton Joyner; brothers, Carl Shelton, Kyle Shelton, Douglas Shelton and Frank Shelton; sisters, Hazel Irby and Margaret Wallace; granddaughters, Sophia Gums and Nicole Elliott and husband, Larry. Also surviving is his great grandson, Robert Shelton Gums. 

The family will receive friends Wednesday, October 4, 2017, at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service from 6:30-8:30 pm and all other times at the home of Linda Joyner, 1504 Pruden St., Roanoke Rapids. 

Rev. Daniel West will conduct a graveside service at Olive Branch Cemetery, Portsmouth, VA, Thursday, October 5, 2017, at 11:00 am.

Marilyn Rose Chambliss Pepper

Marilyn Rose Chambliss Pepper, 71, of Roanoke Rapids, passed away Wednesday, October 4, 2017.

She was born December 20, 1945, in Halifax County to the late Kenneth Chambliss, Sr. and Wilma Edwards Chambliss. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Kenneth Chambliss, Jr.; her sister, Ramona Chambliss; her sister-in-law, Gayle Robinson.

Marilyn was a loving wife and she loved her family. She loved music, working with kids and was a very giving person. Marilyn was also a member of New Hope United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her husband, Joe Wayne Pepper of the home; her father-in-law, Joe N. Pepper; her brothers-in-law, Jerry Pepper and his wife Shirley and Mike Robinson; her sister-in-law, Linda P. Warren all of Roanoke Rapids; many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Friday, October 6, 2017 in the chapel of Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Service with Rev. Sue Owens officiating.  The family will receive friends from 7:00 – 8:30 P.M. Thursday, October 5, 2017 at the funeral home and other times at the home.

Carl Edward 'E.C.' Peoples Jr.

Carl Edward Peoples, Jr. (E.C.), 73, passed away on Tuesday, October 3rd, 2017.

Carl was born in Henderson, NC, and grew up in Roanoke Rapids.

He graduated from Roanoke Rapids High School in 1962 and the apprentice program at the paper mill.  

He retired from the paper mill after 42 years of service. He was also the welding instructor at Halifax Community College for several years.

Carl was an avid hunter and outdoorsman. He took his skills as a welder and learned the art of blacksmithing, which he enjoyed regularly even on his last day of life.

Above all, he loved his family and his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

He was a member of East 10th Street Church of Christ for 53 years and of Halifax United Methodist Church for 17 years.

Carl was preceded in death by his mother and father, Pearl and Carl Peoples, Sr.

He is survived by his best friend and loving wife of 53 years, Norma Jo; his children Carl III (Sahana), Chuck (Lee), and Christina (Bruce); his grandchildren Eli, Cora, Ella, Langston, Maya, and Bodhi; and step-grandchildren Jonathan and Abby.

The family will receive friends at Askew Funeral Services on Thursday from 7-8:30 p.m.

The Celebration of Life will take place at Halifax United Methodist Church on Friday at 11 a.m. The family will have a private interment service.

Shirley Hartsoe Draper, 75, of Weldon, NC, died Thursday, October 5, 2017, at Halifax Regional Medical Center, Roanoke Rapids, NC.

Mrs. Draper was born in Roanoke Rapids, NC, the daughter of the late Hoyle and Rocky Hartsoe Floyd. 

She graduated from Weldon High School and King’s Business College. Her brother, Buddy Hartsoe also preceded her in death. 

She was a retired bookkeeper with Draper Communications.

Surviving are: her husband of fifty-five years, Johnny Draper, a daughter Lori Draper of Weldon, NC, and a sister Vivian Hartsoe of Candler, NC.

A memorial service will be held in the chapel of Wrenn Clarke & Hagan Funeral and Cremation Service, 1015 West 5th Street, Roanoke Rapids, NC, Monday, October 9, 2017, at 2:00 PM, with Rev. Randy Martin officiating.

The family will receive at the funeral home following the service until 4:00 PM.

Hilda Gray DeBerry Jenkins, 74, of Roanoke Rapids passed away Saturday, October7, 2017 at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill.

Hilda was born August 26, 1943 in Halifax County to the late Henry Carless DeBerry and Mary Magdalene Gerringer DeBerry. She was also preceded in death by her husband, James H. Jenkins.

She was a loving wife and mother and loved her family.

She is survived by her son, Shelton M. Jenkins; her brother-in-law, Wayne Jenkins and his wife Sylvia; her sisters-in-law, Charlotte Rodwell and her husband J.B. and Ann Allsbrook all of Roanoke Rapids; three very special cousins, Lee Barber, Ann Harris both of Elon, NC and Dawn Lambert of Locust, NC; a close friend, Verla Jenkins.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, October 11, 2017 in the chapel of Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Service with Rev. D. A. Leonard and Rev. Sue Owens officiating. Burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7:00 – 8:30 P.M. Tuesday, October 10, 2017 at the funeral home.

Mary Elizabeth Burton Nowell, 87, of Roanoke Rapids, died Wednesday October 11, 2017, at her home.

She was the daughter of the late Jimmie Allen and Eula Mae Barrow Burton and was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Ray Nowell, Sr; her grandchildren April and Jennifer Bridgers, brother, James A. Burton, son-in-law Edward Bridgers her brother-in-law, James A. Stalls.

Mary was a member of First Christian Church and loved going to Oscars Restaurant to eat. She also loved listening to and calling in to the Lake Country talk show.

Mary is survived by her five daughters, Betty N. Bridgers of Roanoke Rapids, Nancy Joyner and her husband, Dennis, of Roanoke Rapids, Jonnie Miles and her husband, Charles, of Roanoke Rapids, Rhonda Turner and her husband, “Punk,” of Roanoke Rapids, Gilda Fowler and her husband, Timmy, of Rocky Mount; her son Robbie Nowell and his wife, Tammy, of Roanoke Rapids; her nine grandchildren, Emily Lawhorn and her husband, Shane, Amy Lynch and her husband, Kevin, Robbie Miles and his wife Heather, Chris Turner, Bobbie Smith and her husband Mike, Justin Nowell, Dusty Nowell, Mandy Reason and her husband, Josh, and Jake Fowler; her fifteen Great grandchildren, several step-grandchildren and several step-great grandchildren; her sister Kathleen Stalls of Roanoke Rapids and her brother, Bobby Burton of Roanoke Rapids.

Mary Ann Clary Hinson

Mary Ann Clary Hinson,86, departed this life on Tuesday, October 10, 2017, at home surrounded by her family at bedside. 

She was born February 11, 1931, to Louis B. and Sallie T. Clary, in Brunswick County, Virginia.

Mary Ann was preceded in death by her parents, her infant son, Paul, husband, Robert Brice Hinson, Sr., and mother-in-law, Annie Ruth Vaughan Hinson Deberry, daughter-in-law, Melisa B. Hinson, her brothers, Parris and Edwin Clary and her sisters, Marcella Jackson, Calvia Clary and Doma Cooper.

She was a loving mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother ("GG") who loved her family dearly. She loved to cook, feed everyone, and watch all the children playing around the house. The love and support she showed her family transcends all words. 

She is survived by her loving family; one sister, Sylvia Clary Davis; children, Robert Brice Hinson, Jr., Tina Hinson Craft and husband Gene, of the home, David Wayne Hinson, Lisa Hinson Barnes and husband Earl Barnes, Louis Brandford Hinson and Celia Hinson Sloop; grandchildren, Jennifer Craft Fields, Stephanie Nicole Harrell, Joshua Earl Barnes, David Wayne Hinson, Jr., Justin Gene Craft, Courtney Hinson Mercer, Teresa Beth Hinson Mallon, Melanie Rene' Sloop, Brandon Louis Hinson and Eric Michael Barnes; great grandchildren, Marianna Mechele Fields, Dalaina Reese Harrell, Emma Ruth Barnes, Lohla Rene' Holzworth, Luke Steven Barnes, Aubree Elise Barnes, Eliam Brice Harrell, Elliana Claire Harrell, and soon to be new great grandson, Adam Louis Mercer.

Graveside Services will be conducted in Old Cedarwood Cemetery, Roanoke Rapids Friday, October 13, 2017 at 12:00 noon. 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to graveside service beginning at 11:00 am at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service.

Flowers will be accepted or donations can be made in her honor to The Alzheimer's Foundation of America at www.alzfdn.org.

Mr. Linwood E. “Gene” Johnson, of Halifax, North Carolina, went to meet his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, Saturday, October 14, 2017, at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was 72.

A native of Roanoke Rapids, he was the son of the late Charlie L. and Eleanor Jean Parkes Johnson. 

He was a Man of God, and spent many happy hours coaching and watching his children and grandchildren play ball.

Gene is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Bettie Smith Johnson, two daughters, Teresa Long and her husband Rabbit, and Shelia Wood and her husband Jimmy. Two sisters, Gloria Dean Dunlow of Roanoke Rapids and Carolyn Jean Johnson of Tennessee, one brother Jackie Wayne Johnson of Tennessee, four grandchildren, Danielle Long Maynard and her husband Chris, Jessie Long Lynch and her husband Aaron, Courtney Gray Wood, and Hayley Cheryl Wood, four great grandchildren, Blake, Brody, Logan and Harper.

Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, October 17 at 2:00 P.M. in the Wrenn Clarke and Hagan Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Ricky Jordan officiating. Burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday, October 16, from 6:30 P.M. until 8:00 P.M., other times at his home.
