Eddie Vaiden 'Buck' Pearson

Eddie Vaiden “Buck” Pearson passed away Wednesday, June 3, 2015 at Transition Hospice Home in Raleigh, NC.

Buck was born August 7, 1961 in Roanoke Rapids to William and Irma Dianne Williams Pearson.  He was a lifelong Dallas Cowboys fan who loved horror movies, The Rolling Stones, The Doors, Rob Zombie and Greek Mythology.

Buck was preceded in death by his mother: Irma Dianne Williams Pearson; his grandparents: William and Gertrude Pearson, Eddie and Inell Williams; two uncles: Carl Steve Pearson and Johnny Earl Pearson.

He is survived by his father: William Vaiden Pearson; his sister: Joy Denise Pearson; his special sister: Patooty Cheyenne Pearson; his special brother: Hugsy Paul Pearson, family Dachshund: Jimmy Pearson and little buddies “Chucky” and “Ted”; his aunts: Daphnea W. Thompson (Bernard), Debra Chambers, Pamela P. Wrenn(Tom), Alice Mae Pearson all of Roanoke Rapids, Geraldine P. Martin of Gaston, NC, Madeline P. Cifers(Bud), Alice R. Pearson, Dale P. Davis (Stanley), Cynthia P. Johnson (Dale) and Crystal P. Capps all of Emporia, VA; uncle: Benny R. Pearson(Barbara) of Roanoke Rapids; great aunts: Jeanette Carroll of Gaston, NC, Doris Allen of Skippers, VA and Erma Edwards (William) of Rose Hill, NC,; his favorite cousin and friend: Carl S. Pearson, Jr. (Sharmon) of Pleasant Hill, NC; good friends: Larry “Buddy” Wells, Winfield Morris, Kira Edmondson and Rose Abernathy all of Roanoke Rapids; lifelong best friend: Andrew James “Jay” Borrell of Vicksburg, Michigan.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, June 9, 2015 at Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Service with Bane Angles, Minister officiating.

Burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7:00 – 8:30 P.M. Monday, June 8, 2015 at the funeral home and other times at the home of Debra Chambers, 1313 Chase Avenue.

Raymond Andrew 'Buddy' Bass Jr.

Raymond Andrew "Buddy" Bass, Jr., 83, of Belmont passed away June 4, 2015 at Carillion Assisted Living Center. He was born June 15, 1931 in Halifax County, a son of the late Raymond Andrew Bass and Bessie Marshall Bass.

Buddy was a Recipient of The Order of The long Leaf Pine; was a member of the North Carolina Real Estate Commission and chairman for two terms; a graduate of East Carolina University, where he played football. He owned Bass Construction and Realty of Fayetteville, NC and was a pilot and a member of Cape Fear Flying Association. He currently attended New Hope Presbyterian Church.

 Survivors  include his Wife of 55 years, Joan Cable Bass; Son, Greg Bass and wife, Debbie of Fayetteville, NC; Daughters, Lisa Morris and husband, John of Belmont,  Susan  Bass and fiance, Brad Hickman of  Greenville, NC; Sisters, Tommie Cubine of Virginia Beach, VA and  Carolyn Aumente of Maryland; Grandchildren, Raymond Bass,  Jason Moore, Erin Morris, Tyler Morris White, Emily Bass, and  Hannah Bass; great grandchildren, Townes Raymond White, Garret Moore, Aubryn Bass and Stella Bass. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by Sisters June Jackson, Mary Young Robinson, and Beb Cash.        

A funeral service will be held at 3:00PM, Sunday at New Hope Presbyterian Church with Reverend John Pruitt officiating. The family will greet friends following the service in the fellowship hall.

The family will also celebrate Buddy's life at 1:00PM, Tuesday at St. Marks Episcopal Church in Halifax, NC

Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Cody Ryan Roundtree, age 23 of Roanoke Rapids, NC passed away June 2, 2015 after a long courageous battle with “The Disease of Addiction.“

Cody was born July 9, 1991 in Halifax County North Carolina. Cody loved his two children more than words could say.

Left to cherish his memory are his mother Rose Hamill Roundtree and father William Gilbert Roundtree, III and fiancé Jeanna Dunlow; His two sons Corbin Roundtree and Caiden Roundtree both of Roanoke Rapids; His two sisters Bobbi Barber of Halifax, NC and Kassidy Roundtree of Roanoke Rapids; His two brothers William “Cooter” Roundtree, IV of Darlington, NC and Jacob Roundtree of Roanoke Rapids; His Step-Brother Tyler Shearin of Roanoke Rapids; His maternal grandmother Hazel Hamill of Weldon, NC; His paternal grandparents William Rountree, Jr. and Edith Rountree of Roanoke Rapids; His niece A’Lexus Roundtree and nephew William Gilbert Roundtree, V; His special friends Jennifer McLeod, Jennifer Davis Dunlow and Melody Baldwin. His girlfriend Samantha Thompson of Roanoke Rapids; and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, June 9, 2015 at 11:00 AM at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids with Pastor Jeremy Kobernat officiating. Burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Monday, June 8, 2015 at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids from 6:00 until 8:00 PM

James Jerry Perry

James Jerry Perry, 88, of Roanoke Rapids, died Saturday June 6, 2015.

James, a native of Halifax County was the son of the late Arthur James and Thelma Mitchell Perry. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Pauline Lynch Perry, his sister, Jane Winstead, his brother, E. V. Perry and his son-in-law, Wayne Lewis.

 James served his country in the United States Navy during WWII. He was a faithful member of Calvary Baptist Church and retired from Halifax Linen as Superintendent with 60 years of service.

He is survived by his daughters, Linda P. Mason and her husband, Linwood of Roanoke Rapids, Dianne P. Long and her husband, Wayne of Halifax; his son, Kenneth Wayne Perry and his wife, Cindy of Hickory; two sisters Barbara Barrett of Roanoke Rapids and Daphine Ferguson of Emporia, VA; his grandchildren, Brent Mason and his wife, Wendy, Craig Mason and his wife, Terry, Brian Lewis and his wife, Angela, Kendra Barrett and her husband, Mike, Kristin Pierce and her husband, Terry, Kevin Fisher and his wife, Amy, Keith Fisher and his wife, Amy, Chris Long and Christina Keeran; fifteen great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, June 9, 2015 at 3:00 PM at Calvary Baptist Church with Rev. Randy Martin and Rev. Mike Barrett officiating.

Burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery with Military Honors.

The Family will receive friends from 1:30 PM until service time on June 9, 2015.

Thelma Mae Sugg, age 71 passed away June 4, 2015 at Kitty Askins Hospice Center in Goldsboro, NC.

Thelma was born April 3, 1944 in Greene County North Carolina the daughter of the late Kirby Blount Sugg and Eula Mae Herring Sugg.

She was also preceded in death by three brothers Joshua Suggs, Sidney Suggs and Melvin Herring.

Thelma was a loving mother and cherished her family very much and oh boy did she love her Pepsi Cola.

Left to cherish her memory are her son Jimmy Lee Kornegay and his fiancé April Turner of Roanoke Rapids, NC; Her two sisters Eula Brown and Linda Dawson both of Kinston, NC; Her three grandchildren Jimmy Lee Kornegay, Jr., Matthew Turner and Brianna Turner all of Roanoke Rapids, NC. Also many loving nieces and nephews.

A service to celebrate the life of Thelma Mae Sugg will be held Thursday, June 11, 2015 at 2:00 PM in the Chapel of Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids, NC with Rev. Dale Russell officiating.

Mrs. Doris Bridgers Ricks age 84, passed away Sunday, June 7, 2015 at Pine Forest Rest Home in Potecasi, NC.

Doris was born January 18, 1931, the daughter of the late William Harold Bridgers and Ruby Lassiter Bridgers.  

She was also preceded in death by her two daughters, Vickie Ricks Birdsong, Donna Ricks Jones and her son-in-law, Robert E. Birdsong Sr.  

She was a member of Creeksville Baptist Church.

She is survived by her son, Stanley Ricks Jr., her grandchildren, Robert E. Birdsong Jr. and his wife Jerri Kay, Richard “Chubby” Birdsong, Adrienne Nicole Robbins, Mary Beth Birdsong Reed and her husband Terry,

Matthew J. Ricks and his wife Kayla and Justin L. Jones.  Her sisters, Frances B. Jenkins and Joyce B. Storey and her husband Ronald.  Her great grandchildren,  Blake Birdsong, Lacy Robbins, Logan Robbins, Cheyanne Ricks, Maci Ricks, and Terry Reed Jr. Also many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 10, 2015 at 3:00 PM at Creeksville Baptist Church with Rev. Andy Sloan officiating.  

Burial will follow at the Ricks Family Cemetery.

Mollie Elizabeth Reese Whittemore

Mollie Elizabeth Reese Whittemore age 91, fought a long valiant battle with Alzheimer’s disease before losing the battle on June 6, 2015, but she won the war because God took her home.

Mollie was born January 6, 1924 to the late Rufus Reese and Rosa Norwood Reese. She was also preceded in death by her husband George Whittemore. Her brothers Joe, Willie, Tom, Fred and Clifford. Her sisters Nellie Johnston, Katie Neville, Edna Lee, Claudia Reese, Maggie Eason and Edith Strickland.

Mollie quit school in the 12th grade because she said she couldn’t keep up with her studies and continue to work, and thought she needed to work and help the family more than she needed to continue school. She worked from then to 1986 except for four years she took off to be with her newborn daughter. Mollie loved to do rebus and crossword puzzles and was an avid reader. She also loved country and gospel music and, any kind of piano music. She was an excellent cook and tried to feed anybody who came to her home and everybody loved her biscuits. She cooked with love.

Mrs. Whittemore was a long time member of Calvary Baptist Church, but in recent years she had not been able to attend church. She had been in Jacob’s Nursing and Rehab. Center since December of 2012. Very much appreciation to those who did such a wonderful job taking care of Mollie.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughter Sally Seward; Her two grandsons Brian and Eliot Seward; Her sister Estelle Williams; Her friend Joe Law and many loving nieces and nephews. Many thanks to nieces Joyce Burnette, Priscilla Dorer and Linda Hobbs for helping and caring for Mrs. Whittemore until she had to leave home.

Graveside services will be held at Crestview Memorial Cemetery Wednesday, June 10, 2015 at 11:00AM with Rev. Randy Martin officiating.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, June 9, 2015 at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids, NC from 7:00 until 8:30 PM and other times at the home of Joyce Burnette 428 Zoo Road Roanoke Rapids.

Tony Wayne Allen, 49, of Gardner Drive in Gaston passed away Friday, June 5, 2015 at his home.

Tony was born in Halifax County August 27, 1965 to Marvin Junior Allen and Peggy Ann Brantley Allen.  He was preceded in death by his mother: Peggy Ann Brantley Allen; his brother: Darren James Allen.

Tony was a loving son, brother and loyal friend.  He lived life to the fullest.

He is survived by his father: Marvin Junior Allen; his brother: Marvin Wesley Allen both of Gaston.

Graveside services will be held 11:00 A.M. Thursday, June 11, 2015 at Cedarwood Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 9:00 P.M. Wednesday at Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Service and other times at the home.

John Wayne 'Shorty' Byrum

John Wayne “Shorty” Byrum, 79, of Roanoke Rapids, fought a long and courageous battle with cancer and died peacefully on the morning of Friday, June 12, 2015 at his home.  

He retired from J.P. Stephens/BIBB and loved to fish, tell tall tales, and loved all children.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Ellis and Hettie Bell Byrum, three brothers, Roy, Butch, and Thellie Byrum, and a son, John Robert Byrum.

 Those left to cherish his memories include his wife of 46 years, Amarilis Faye Byrum; his sons, Thomas Earl Byrum (Barbara) of Roanoke Rapids, Matthew C. Byrum (Wendy) of Garysburg, Thellie W. Byrum (Linda) of Roanoke Rapids; his daughters, Elizabeth Ann Byrum of Roanoke Rapids and Teresa P. Bennett (Keith) of Roanoke Rapids; thirteen grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, several special nieces and nephews, and many special friends that he thought of as family.

A memorial service will be held at the chapel of Askew Funeral and Cremation Services on Sunday, June 14, 2015 at 2:00 PM with Dr. Chet Rains officiating.

Gold Dean Carawan

Gold Dean Carawan, 90, passed away Thursday June 11, 2015, in Roanoke Rapids.

Gold was born July 12, 1924, in Lowland, NC to the late Clinton Gold Carawan and Iva Camper Carawan.  

As a young boy, the family moved to Roanoke Rapids where he attended Roanoke Rapids Schools, graduating in 1942.  

During WWII, Gold served in the Merchant Marines, later changed to the Coast Guard. He served in the engine room aboard The Red Star under Captain Ross Goodman.  

Gold retired as a supervisor from J.P. Stevens after 38 years of service.  

His hobbies were restoring antiques and wood working.  

He was a member of East 10th Street Church of Christ for over 63 years where he served 30 years in roles of deacon, elder and chairman of the finance committee.  

He was married to the love of his life, Myrtle Jordan for 70 years.  He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, great great grandfather, and friend.  In addition to his parents, Gold was preceded in death by his beloved brother, Harold Carawan and beloved sister, Harriette Johnson.

Surviving are his wife, Myrtle Jordan Carawan of the home; daughters, Lorraine Oliver and husband, Kenny, of Hampton, VA and Peggy Dale and husband, Roosevelt, of Roanoke Rapids; sisters, Louella Arthur of Roanoke Rapids, Nancy Carawan of Chesapeake, VA and Carol Seta of Roanoke Rapids; grandchildren, Rodney Oliver and Kim Hernandez; great grandchildren, Michael Fluet, Chris Hernandez, Ashley Hernandez and Curtis Oliver; great great grandchildren, Haylynn Fluet and Peyton Fluet.  Also surviving is his brother-in-law, Paul Johnson, Sr. and many nieces and nephews.  

Dave Chapman, Minister, will conduct funeral services at East 10th Street Church of Christ on Saturday, June 13, 2015, at 12:00 pm with interment to follow in Cedarwood Cemetery.  The family will receive friends at 11:00 am, one hour prior to service, also at the church in the Clyde P. Wheeler Fellowship Hall.

Mattie Ree Cullom Adkins

Mattie Ree Cullom Adkins, 96, died Friday, June 12, 2015, at her residence on Kyle Road.

She was born March 1, 1919, in Halifax County to the late William George Cullom and Eliza Pittard Cullom.  

Mattie was retired from the Department of Social Services and was a member of Quankie Baptist Church.  

She was a member of the Senior Citizens Club and the Senior Citizens Bowling League.  

In addition to her parents, Mattie was preceded in death by her special granddaughters, Susan Annette Sparks and Wendy Lee Medlin.

Surviving are her daughters, Linda Ann Medlin of Roanoke Rapids, Lois Dean Mills and husband, Charles Edward, Ellen Cullom Phillips, both of Rocky Mount and Sharon Lupton and husband, Jim of Roanoke Rapids; sons Julius Raymond Adkins, Jr. of Littleton and Thomas M. Adkins of Angier; special friend, O’Dell Harrington and many nieces and nephews.  Also surviving are nine grandchildren, twenty-one great grandchildren and nine great -great grandchildren.

Revs. Billy Hardwick and Ray McDonald will conduct funeral services at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service Monday, June 15, 2015 at 11:00 am with interment to follow at Quankie Baptist Church Cemetery.  The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 9:30 am, also at the funeral home.

Lisa 'Buffy' Edmondson Whitby

Lisa “Buffy” Edmondson Whitby, died Thursday, June 11, 2015.  

She is survived by her husband, Kenny; her son, Holt Gordon of the home; her stepsons, Paul and Reid Whitby; her parents, Gene “Peter Rabbit” and Vivian Keeter Edmondson of Roanoke Rapids; her brothers, Gray Edmondson of Roanoke Rapids and Mark Edmondson of Wilmington; her nephews, Dylan and Landen Edmondson; and Holt’s father, Willie Gordon of Roanoke Rapids.

Lisa was an incredible mom to her son and step sons.

Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, June 20, 2015  at 11:00 AM at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints with Bishop Blain Given officiating.  Interment will follow at Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids. 

The family will receive friends on Friday, June 19, 2015 from 7:00 to 8:30 PM at Askew Funeral and Cremation Services.

Kenneth 'Kenny' Ray Davis

 Kenneth “Kenny” Ray Davis, age 58 passed away on Sunday, June 14, 2015 at St. Mary-Corwin Hospital in Pueblo, Colorado.

Kenny was born August 9, 1956 in Bertie County North Carolina the son of the late classy father Rupert Earl Davis and his loving mother Nancy Jane Johnson Davis. He was also preceded in death by his big brother Larry Wayne Davis.

Kenny did a great job as a husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend to those fortunate enough to have known him.

We will always remember his smile and his infectious laugh and love.

Kenny Ray was a hard worker and wore many hats over the years. The one most important hat of those he wore, was that of a devoted husband and loving father.

His family was the most important thing to him and he was always willing to make sacrifices to provide and protect them. To his two little girls, Dad was their hero. He taught his children how to be tough and raised them to be strong and proud. Kenny and his wife Sandra often enjoyed taking to the road, be it by motorcycle, car or RV. Being raised by a mechanic Kenny Ray would often spend his free time tinkering, rebuilding and restoring vehicles of many shapes and sizes.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, his best friend and his love of 35 years Sandra Dee Davis of Buffalo Gap, TX; His two daughters Shasta McClure of Tuscola, TX and Brooke Valenzuela of Roseville, CA; His two brothers Earl Davis of the Philippines and Jerry H. Davis of Windsor, NC; His sister Judy Conner of Windsor, NC; His five grandchildren, one niece, four nephews and two grand nephews.

Funeral Services to celebrate the life of Kenny Ray Davis will be held Friday, June 19, 2015 in the Chapel of Massey Funeral Home in Aulander, NC at 2:00 PM with Rev. J.N. Baggett officiating. Burial will follow in Edgewood Cemetery in Windsor, NC.

Mildred Smith Stokes

Mildred Smith Stokes, age 100, of Roanoke Rapids, passed away on June 17, 2015.  

She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Henry Melton Stokes.

Mildred retired after 38 years of service from J.P. Stevens Rosemary Mill as a weaver.  She joined First Christian Church at the age of 13 and was an active member there for 87 years.  She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother.

She is survived by her daughter, Joyce “Javotte” Stokes Davis and her husband, Tom of Littleton; her granddaughter, Terri Laneau Lewis and her husband, Blane of Manassas, VA; her grandson, Thomas (Tom) Melton Davis of Lorton, VA; her great grandchildren, Joyce Jennifer Lewis and Kathryn (Katie) Lee Lewis, both of Manassas, VA; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, June 20, 2015 at 2:00 PM at First Christian Church with Minister Bane Angles officiating.  

Entombment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery in Tarboro, NC.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, June 20, 2015 in the fellowship hall of First Christian Church from 1:00 until service time.

Nat Taylor Clements, 70 of Wright Road, Littleton passed away Friday, June 19, 2015 at his home.

Nat was born January 19, 1945 in Greensville County, VA to the late Jesse Simon Clements and Hattie Florence Taylor Clements.  He was also preceded in death by his brothers: Carter Neal Clements,  Alvin Thomas Clements and Richard “Pete” Clements; his sister: Geraldine Clements.

Nat loved farming, auctions and collecting junk.

Nat was survived by his wife of 38 years Betsy Peterson; his children: Tracy Clements and his wife Hazel of Littleton, Jesse Lee Clements of Valley, AL, Danette Clements-Love , Natasha Peterson, and Shannon Peterson all of Roanoke Rapids, Wayne Peterson of Columbia, NC, Susan Thompson and her husband Tony, Vicky Peterson both of Roanoke Rapids  and Ricky Peterson and his wife Kathy of Emporia, VA; his brother: Bobby Clements and his wife Derenda of Gaston; his sister: Betty Byars of Durham, NC; fourteen grandchildren and five great grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 A.M. Nell Rose O'Brien Vaughan

Nell  Rose O’Brien Vaughan, age 88 passed away on June 22, 2015 at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, NC.

Mrs. Vaughan was born March 17, 1927 in Vance County North Carolina, the daughter of the late Clinton Benjamin O’Brien and Mary Grace Sneed O’Brien.

She was also preceded in death by her husband Merle Carter Vaughan, her sister Edna O. Chandler and her daughter Nelda Lassiter and her husband Stephen.

Left to cherish her memory are her sister Helen O. Brame of Bracey, VA; Her three grandchildren Brien Lassiter and his wife Brenda, Jason Lassiter  both of Ahoskie, NC and Hillary Lassiter Lynn and her husband Thomas of Greenville, NC; Her four grandchildren Evan, Alden and Zackary Lassiter all of Ahoskie, NC and Carter Lynn of Greenville, NC.

Funeral services to celebrate the life of Nell Vaughan will be held Wednesday, June 24, 2015 at 2:00 PM at First Baptist Church in Ahoskie, NC with Rev. Daniel Glaze officiating. Burial will follow in Ahoskie Cemetery.

The family will receive friends prior to the service at First Baptist Church in Ahoskie from 12:30 until 1:45 PM. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society c/o 8300 Health Park #10 Raleigh, NC 27615.

Marion Elizabeth Rowell Bellflower, 82, passed away Saturday, June 20, 2015, at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, NC.

Marion was born, May 18, 1933, in Northampton County to the late Tommy Edward Rowell and Olive Rosetta Cox Rowell.  

She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, and aunt.  

In addition to her parents, Marion was preceded in death by her husband, Gordon Bellflower, Sr.; daughter, Peggy Bellflower; granddaughter, Melissa Taylor and her brothers, Garland Rowell and Tommy Rowell.

Surviving is her son, Gordon Bellflower, Jr. and wife, Glena, of Jackson; daughters, Diana Tyler of Rocky Mount, and Gayle Bellflower and special companion, Tommy of Rich Square; sisters, Linda Kidd and husband, Wallace, of Garysburg, Evelyn Wray of Matoaca, VA; brothers, Jimmy Rowell and wife, Lois of Roanoke Rapids, and Donald Rowell and wife, Ida, of Brinkleyville, NC; grandchildren, Steven Taylor, Holly Gordon and husband, James, Jeremy Bellflower and wife, Lisa, John Bellflower and wife, Shannon and Gregory Bolton.  Also surviving are several great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.  

The family will have a private service at a later date.

Andrew Michael Lyle

God’s special miracle, Andrew Michael Lyle, who was given to us 24 years ago on March 8, 1991, passed away Wednesday, June 24, 2015 at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill.  

Andrew was born in Orange County, NC to Lisa Cannon Lyle and Donald Peter Lyle.  

He was a “die hard” Tarheel fan and Nascar fan.  

He was the recipient of the 2007 Herald Angel and attended East Tenth Street Church of Christ where he loved his church family.  

Andrew loved life, visiting and socializing with everyone; Andrew never met a stranger.  

Preceding Andrew in death was his grandfather, Cecil J. Cannon, great grandmother, Pearlie W. Futrell and great grandfather, James Clyde Futrell.

Surviving is his mother, Lisa C. Lyle and special friend, Tim Hammack of Roanoke Rapids; special grandmother, Ruth F. Cannon of Roanoke Rapids; aunt and uncle, Cheryl and Gwynn Lucas; cousin, Skylar Lucas, all of Pelham, NC; great aunt and uncle, Ruby and Wilbur Floyd of Roanoke Rapids; great uncle, Malcom T. Cannon of Richmond, VA; great aunt and uncle, Phyllis and W.Jr. Brockwell of Lawrenceville, VA.  Also surviving is a special loving caregiver of 12 years, Jackie Bowser.

The family would like to extend a special and heart felt thank you for the wonderful care given to Andrew by the staff at Halifax Regional Medical Center, the Wound Center, UNC Hospitals, Home Health and Hospice, Dr. Robert Campbell, who invented the titanium rod from which Andrew benefitted, Cardinal Innovation, his case worker, Angela Silver and staff and Maxim Health Care in Louisburg, NC.  

The family will receive friends at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service, who is handling arrangements, Friday, June 26, 2015, from 7-8:30 pm. Dave Chapman, Minister, will conduct funeral services Saturday, June 27, 2015, at 2:00 pm at East Tenth Church of Christ with interment to follow in Old Cedarwood Cemetery.

Billy Ray Walker Sr.

Billy Ray Walker, Sr., 69, died Saturday, June 27, 2015, at Wake Med in Raleigh.

Billy was born in Halifax County, June 3, 1946, to the late Bonner Richard and Lona Williams Walker.  

He was a veteran having served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam Conflict.  

In addition to his parents, Billy was preceded in death by his brothers, James R. and Clarence Walker, and his sister, Dorothy Jenkins.  

Surviving is his wife, Judith Ann Walker of the home; son, Billy Ray Walker, Jr.; daughters, Tammy Overton and husband, Joseph, and Tina Walker Ogden and husband, Lenny, all of Roanoke Rapids; sister, Rena Harlow of Weldon; grandchildren, John David Overton and Sara Beth Overton.  Also, surviving are several nieces and nephews.  

The family will receive friends at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service, who is handling arrangements, Wednesday, July 1, 2015 from 7:00-8:30 pm.  Rev. D.A. Leonard will conduct a memorial service to celebrate Billy’s life Thursday, July 2, 2015 in the chapel at Hockaday beginning at 11:00 am.  In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorial contributions be made to a Disabled Veteran or Wounded Warrior Charity of ones chose.

Alvorado Faison Grooms Pearson, 99, of Roanoke Rapids, passed away on Friday, June 26, 2015.  

She was the daughter of the late Henry Martin and Floy Savage Faison.  She was also preceded in death by her husband, Walter B. Grooms; her second husband; and her beloved uncle and aunt, John and “Sis” O’Briant.                       

 She is survived by her son, Fred Grooms and his wife, Patricia of Roanoke Rapids; her granddaughter, Sara Grooms Page and her husband, Kyle of Fayetteville, NC; her grandson, William Wheeler of Roanoke Rapids; and one great grandson, Landyn Page.

A graveside service was held at Cedarwood Cemetery on Saturday, June 27, 2015 with Rev. Randy Martin officiating.  

The family wishes to extend a special thanks to the nurses and staff at Liberty Commons in Weldon, NC.
