Rebecca 'Becky' Dickens Moore

Rebecca “Becky” Dickens Moore, 95, of Roanoke Rapids, died Friday, December 22, 2017, at home after a brief illness.
 
Mrs. Moore, a native of Halifax County and the daughter of the late Forrest Dickens and Bessie C. Dickens was a long time member of Rosemary Methodist Church where she taught the four-year-old Sunday School class for over 30 years.  Mrs. Moore was a life time member of the Eastern Star and sold Tupperware for over 50 years.
 
Mrs. Moore was preceded in death by her husband, John L. Moore, Jr., her parents, and six brothers and sisters, Birdie, Richard, Samuel, Howard, Nisha and Frazier.
 
Mrs. Moore is survived by her three daughters: Phyllis Moore of Durham, Ann Moore of Roanoke Rapids, and Johnni Moore (Jimmy Knight) of Kenly. She is also survived by Raymond DiMartino, who was loved by her as a son. Also left to miss her daily treats and loving care is her constant companion, Boo-Boo.
 
The family extends special thanks to her caregivers Laverne Taylor and Doris Harrison.
 
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Masonic Home for Children in Oxford, N.C.
 
Visitation will be on Wednesday, December 27th at 1:00 p.m. at Rosemary Methodist Church followed by the funeral service at 2:00 p.m.  in the church.   Burial will follow at Cedarwood Cemetery.

Monroe, NC, Elizabeth Kay Dunlow Campbell, 36, passed away December 22, 2017. Liz was born in Greensville County Va. on April 10, 1981 to Ronald Scott Dunlow and Deborah S. Derrick.

A service to celebrate her life will be held at 3:00 PM Tuesday, December 26, 2017 at Ebenezer Baptist Church,1417 Unionville-Indian Trail Rd. Indian Trail, NC 28079. The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 2:00 PM. Burial will follow at Price Cemetery.

Liz is survived by her children; Greyson Campbell, and Hannah Campbell, mother; Deborah Derrick (Steve), brother; Matthew Dunlow, sisters; Melissa Mullins, Sandy Cortright, aunts; Nancie Sasser, Kay Howard, Shelby Bradshaw, uncles; Kenneth Sasser, Brian Dunlow, Herby Dunlow, step brother; Michael Derrick, step sister; Amanda Parker, and special friend Stephanie Smith.

Liz was preceded in death by her father Ronald Scott Dunlow.

Jean Patterson Somogyi, 43, of Roanoke Rapids passed away Friday, December 23, 2017 at her home.

Jean was born August 20, 1974 in Halifax County to Gene Ray Patterson and the late Paula Hux Patterson.

Jean loved her babies and always said the only steps in her house were those that led to the front door. She always put everybody else first. I love you forever, I like you for always, as long as I’m living, my mama you’ll be.

Jean is survived by her husband, Rich Somogyi of the home; her father, Gene Patterson of Roanoke Rapids; her grandmother, Irene Morgan of Roanoke Rapids; her children, Corey Jenkins and his wife Jayme of Darlington, Paige Elizabeth Turner of the home, Adrienne Turner Powell and her husband Michael, Stephanie Turner and her companion Lee Elks both of Roanoke Rapids and Brittany Turner and her fiancé Aaron bellman of Wilson; her grandchildren, Daylan Jenkins and Rayleigh Powell; her sisters, Lara Ann Perkinson and her husband Eddie and Crystal Patterson Davis and her husband Larry both of Roanoke Rapids; her special companions, Zoey, Cloey, Storm and Boots; her special caregivers, her second mama, Aunt Betty Conner, Aunt Becky Allen, Aunt Laura Elmore and her niece, Christy Nae Nae Davis; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

The family would like to give a special thanks to Jean’s working wife, Karen Tharrington, Tammy Rodwell and Dr. Isaac Miller.

A memorial service to celebrate Jean’s life and the lives of nurses will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, December 30, 2017 in the chapel of Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Service with Chaplain Joshua Pair and Dennis Parnell officiating. The family request that all nurses wear scrubs and all others attend in casual attire.

Jason Lee DeBerry

Jason Lee DeBerry died unexpectedly on December 21, 2017. 

He was born June 20, 1975 in Roanoke Rapids. 

He graduated from Northwest High School. 

At age eighteen he joined the Army. 

Sergeant DeBerry  then served in the National Guard where he served proudly in Iraq and Afghanistan from 2003 -2005. 

After his medical separation he worked for Terminix and Orkin. 

In Texas, he worked for Exxon Corporation as a security guard.

He deeply loved his dogs, Missy Bell and Stinky. 

He was a voracious reader who enjoyed history and graphic novels. He enjoyed online gaming and had many online buddies. 

He was interested in Star Wars and Star Trek; moreover, he enjoyed working with his hands and on vehicles. 

His hobbies included fixing and building computers. 

Jason loved his family more than anything else. 

He had a kind and generous spirit. He will be truly missed by all who loved him.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Grady L. and Nancy B. DeBerry; maternal grandparents Dr. George T. and  Rosemarie S. Gardner.

Jason is survived by his father, Glenn Edward DeBerry; mother, Diane G. Stansbury and stepfather, Jack D. Stansbury; two sons, Jason Matthew DeBerry, Jacob Lee DeBerry; brother, Jonathan DeBerry; sisters, Jackie  and Joyce Stansbury and the missing Shonda Stansbury; ex-wives, Amy Whitener and Angel Avoles; niece and nephew, Riley Chase and Colton DeBerry.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm Thursday, December 28, 2017, in the Chapel of Wrenn, Clarke, & Hagan Funeral Home with Roby McLaughlin officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery.

Family and friends will be received Wednesday, December 27, 2017 at the Funeral Home from 7:00 until 8:30

Hazel Carter Grissom, 69, of Roanoke Rapids, died Wednesday, December 27, 2017, at Duke University Hospital.

A native of Roanoke Rapids, Hazel was the daughter of the late Andrew Carter and Betty Brooks Carter.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Grissom, and a sister, Dora Lee Cook. 

Hazel worked as a hairdresser for many years then retired from contractor sales at Moore’s Building Supplies.

Hazel is survived by her son, Kenny Porch and his wife Donna, of Gaston; her brother, Andrew Thomas Carter of Greenville, NC ; brother in law, William Cook Sr. of Gaston; three grandchildren, Chris, Travis, and Danielle Porch, special niece, Betty J “BJ” Carter, with whom she lived, nieces and nephews, Darlene Maxwell, William Cook Jr, Andrew Hallenbeck, and Sherry Vowell.

Wrenn Clarke & Hagan Funeral and Cremation Service is taking care of arrangements where the family will receive friends Saturday, December 30, 2017 from 6:00 until 7:30 P.M. 

No services are planned at this time.

Mr. Ralph Steve Turner, 62, of Jackson, died unexpectedly at his residence on Thursday, December 28, 2017.

Mr. Turner was born in Northampton County on May 5, 1955, the son of James Henry Turner and Trevor Faison Turner, 

 In addition to his parents, a great grandchild, Casen Weeks; and two brothers, also preceded him in death.

Mr. Turner was a truck driver.   He enjoyed fishing, hunting and "talking junk."

Survivors include his sons, Kenneth and Steve Turner; daughter, Jennifer Howard; brothers, James and Mack Turner;
sisters, Mary Spence and Sandra Brown; 13 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 - 8 pm Tuesday, January 2, 2018 at Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Service.

The funeral service will be held at 1:00 pm Wednesday in the chapel of Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Service.  

Due to the expected cold weather, the burial in Crestview Memorial Park will be private.

Shirley Jean Lassiter Edwards, 74, of Big John Store Road passed away Friday, December 29, 2017 at her home.

Shirley was born January 16, 1943 in Johnston County to the late Zacheriah Lassiter and Martha Nola Bryant Lassiter. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Thomas Edwards.

She is survived by her daughters, Darlene Jernigan and her husband Danny of Jackson and Lynne Bryant and her husband John; her grandchildren, Ashley Nicole Meadows, Charles Alexander “Alex” Meadows and his wife Christina and Thomas Osmore Jernigan and his wife Chelsea; her great-grandchildren, Silas Thomas Jernigan and Anderson Nicole Jernigan; her sisters, Brenda Gooding, Joyce Dawson and Jackie Kyle.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

William Edward Terry

William Edward Terry, 81, of Roanoke Rapids, died Friday, December 29,2017, at Autumn Village Nursing Facility in Beulaville, NC.

Mr. Terry was born, August 29, 1936, at Barksdale Field, Shreaveport, LA to the late John Jerome and Shirley Jeanette Jones Terry.  He was a retired Lt. Commander in the United States Navy. 

In addition to his parents, Mr. Terry was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Bruce Terry.

Surviving are his daughter, Heather Harris; son-in-law, Tim Harris, both of Jacksonville, NC; brother, Robert Alvin Terry and wife, Janice of Port Orange, FL; three grandchildren, Kathleen Williams, Alana Williams, and Matthew Williams.  Also surviving are his nephews, Robert A. Terry, Jr. and his wife, Jeannie, of Boynton Beach, FL and James E. Terry and his wife, Meechelle, of Daytona Beach, FL.

Rev. Bane Angles will conduct funeral services in the chapel at Askew Funeral Services, Roanoke Rapids, Thursday, January 4, 2018 at 2:00 pm. The family will receive friends one hour prior to services also at the funeral home. Interment will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery with Military Honors.

Charles Thomas “Tommy” Allen, 78, of Roanoke Rapids passed away Saturday, December 30, 2017 at Halifax Regional Medical Center.

Tommy was born October 31, 1939 in Halifax County to the late Charles Arthur Allen and Ollie Gums Allen.

He was a member of New Hope United Methodist Church and served in the US Army.

Tommy is survived by his wife, Jewel Allen of the home; his children, Cathy Crochet and her husband Clinny and Todd Allen and his wife Paula both of Roanoke Rapids; his grandchildren, Samantha Allen of Gainsville, FL and T.J. Allen, Jr. of Roanoke Rapids; his brother Wayne Allen and his wife Carolyn of Littleton.

Funeral services will be held 12:00 P.M. Tuesday, January 2, 2017 in the chapel of Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Service with Rev. Sue Owens officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery.

Marie Reid May,77, of Bullington Road, Roanoke Rapids passed away Sunday, December 31, 2017 at her home.

Marie was born December 28, 1940 in Warren County to the late James Howard Reid and Viola Carter Reid. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, James Howard Reid and James Thomas Reid; and her granddaughter, Lisa Marie Hale.

She was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church, she loved singing in the choir. Marie retired from J.P. Stevens and she enjoyed cooking and shopping.

Marie is survived by her husband, Clarence “Buck” May of the home; her sons, David May of Knightdale, Stephen May and his wife Gladys of Salt Lake City, Utah and Phillip Allen May and his wife Aura of Wendell; her son-in-law, Jeff Foley of Raleigh; her daughters, Sheila Hale of Raleigh and Susan White and her husband Jerry of Zebulon; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; her brothers, John Perry Reid of Henderson and Robert Lee Reid of Littleton; her sisters, Patsy Parker and her husband Preston of New Hill, Ellen Ellis of Roanoke Rapids and Faye Robertson and her husband Jerry of Henderson.

Funeral services will be held 3:30 P.M. Wednesday, January 3, 2017 in the chapel of Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Service with Rev. Roy Porter officiating. The family will receive friends from 2:00 – 3:30 P.M. at the funeral home and other times at the home. Burial will follow in Crestview Memorial Cemetery.

Joyce 'Linda' Goins-Burnette

Joyce "Linda" Goins-Burnette was born on February 18, 1960 in Halifax County to the late Dorsey & Bertha Goins. She departed this life to eternal rest on December 31, 2017.

Linda, as she was affectionately called, was a lifelong resident of Halifax County. She served in the United States Army, where she served her country until she was honorably discharged. 

She enjoyed spending time with her son, Rayshad; as well as other friends and family, completing Search & Find books, and putting together Jigsaw puzzles.

Linda was a loving and devoted mother, and will be remembered for her fun and loving spirit.  She would lend a helping hand to anyone in need.

She was preceded in death by Father and Mother, Dorsey & Bertha Goins, and brother, Dorsey Jr.

She leaves to cherish her memory, a loving son, Rayshad D'Juan Goins; husband, Henry Burnette; Three sisters, Doris Goins Hewlin (Jeffrey), Barbara Ann Goins & Connie Vernet Bell (Theodore Jr).  One brother, Calvin Antonio Goins; Two nieces, Sharon S. & Crystal G.  Three nephews, Darius G., Delveckeo G., & Clarence Jr. Three great-nieces, Davonne S., Ty'Ashia L. & A'Niyah M. Three great-nephews; Xavier & Xzvionne R. & Caleb G. and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

 A Homegoing service will be held 1:00 P.M. Saturday, January 6, 2017 at Greater Saints Chapel Baptist Church, 5411 Ringwood Road, Enfield, NC 27823 with Rev. Willie Peterson, officiating.

Cheryl Ann McLane Bland, 58, died at her home Thursday, January 3, 2018.

Cheryl was born in Franklin, VA, May 3, 1958, to the late Earl Henry and Myrtle Delores Snead McLane.  In addition to her parents, Cheryl was preceded in death by father-in-law, Robert Bland. 

Surviving is her devoted husband of 38 years, Robert W. Bland, Jr. of the home; daughter, Kristina Hubbard and husband, Jereme; son Robert Earl Bland and wife, Kristie, all of Roanoke Rapids; sister, Kathrine Mahoney and husband, Paul, of Indiana; brother, Tommy McLane and wife, Gloria, of Florida; four grandchildren, Kaitlyn Hubbard, Ethan Hubbard, Brianna Bland and Bentley Bland; two step grandchildren, Paige Dickerson and Ahlayna Wallace.  Also surviving is her mother-in-law, Carol Bland of Weldon.

Rev. Larry Matthews will conduct a service of remembrance at Askew Funeral Service, Jackson Street Chapel, Sunday, January 7, 2018, at 2:00 pm. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.

Elmer Levi Grizzard, 90, of Emporia passed away on January 3, 2018.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Vera Lee Pearson Grizzard. He was also preceded in death by brothers, Earl M. Grizzard, Frank E. Grizzard, and Jessie K. “Pete” Grizzard.

He is survived by his son, Ronnie L. Grizzard and wife Penny; daughter, Sharon K. Morton and husband Mark; grandchildren, Jessica Vick Dunn and husband Cody, Ashley Lauren Grizzard and husband Justin Gibson, Brian “Kirk” Grizzard and friend Stephanie Perez; great-grandchildren, Mackenzie Dunn, Arylee G. Dunn, Adyson K. Dunn, Michael C. Dunn, Jr., and Vera Madison Burke; brother, Benjamin T. “Bubba” Grizzard and sisters, Ethel L. Vick, Polly Grizzard, Willie Mae Harris, Barbara Grizzard, Alease Braswell, and Diane Smith.

A church service will be held at Calvary Baptist Church on Saturday, January 6, 2018 at 3:30 P.M., with a graveside service immediately following in Emporia Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Calvary Baptist Church at 3:00 P.M prior to the service.

Betty Gossett Cooper, 73, of Thelma Road, Roanoke Rapids passed away Wednesday, January 3, 2018.

Betty was born August 31, 1944 in Halifax County to the late Johnny Gossett and Nellie Sykes Gossett.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Charles Wade Cooper.

Betty was a longtime member of South Rosemary United Methodist Church, President of the United Methodist Women’s Ministry and the Kitchen Ministry.

She was a very loving wife, mother and grandmother.

She was very involved at Halifax Academy during Becky and Cooper’s time at the school.

Betty was truly a kind and gentle soul, had a great sense of humor, very witty. She always put everybody else first and loved dancing and shaking a tailfeather.

Betty is survived by her daughter, Becky Cooper Davis and her fiancé Marty Limer; her grandson, Cooper McClean Davis; her brother-in-law, Gerald Lynch all of Roanoke Rapids; her nephew, Brian Lynch of Florida; several devoted cousins, Dale Warrick of Bristol, TN, and Lisa Fowler of Knightdale and many devoted friends.

A memorial service to celebrate Betty’s life will be held 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, January 9, 2018 at South Rosemary United Methodist Church with Rev. Sue Owens, Rev. Kermit Lee Braswell and Rev. Richard Hill officiating.

Burial will follow at Crestview Memorial Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 P.M. Monday, January 8, 2018 at Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Service and other times at the home.

Harry Ogburn Fishel Jr.

Harry Ogburn Fishel, Jr. of Roanoke Rapids passed away January 4, 2018, at Vidant Medical Center, Greenville, NC. He was 94 years old. He was born April 27, 1923 in Vaughan, NC, son of the late Harry Ogburn Fishel and Agnes Norman Fishel.

He was graduate of Warrenton High School and North Carolina State University  with a degree in textiles. He was a member of Kappa Alpha Order. He was employed by Simmons Company in Roanoke Rapids; later, he opened his own real estate and insurance company, where he was very active for many years. He was a member of the Roanoke Rapids Board of Realtors and the NC Assn of Realtors.

Harry was a Southern Gentleman and a quiet man of faith. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved nature. He was a longtime member of First Presbyterian Church, Roanoke Rapids, where he was a former Deacon and taught Sunday School. He received the” Outstanding Older Adult Award” from the New Hope Presbytery in 2001.

Preceding Harry in death were two sisters, Anne Hunter Fishel Polk (James) and Mary Norman Fishel White (James)

Harry is survived by his wife of 66 years, Grace Pettit Jones Fishel; two sons, Hary Ogburn Fishel, III (Jean),of  Lake Greenwood, SC and Frederick McKinney Fishel (kathleen), of Gainsville, Fl; two grandchildren, Julia Anne Fishel, of Honolulu,Hi and Daniel Carter Fishel, of Greenville, SC; nieces, Mary Patterson, Janet, Knox, Anne Douglas and Beverly; nephews, Tasker, Wesley and Edward; a host great nieces, great nephews, great great nieces , great great nephews, cousins, and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am Monday, January 8, 2018, at First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Joseph Sandoval officiating. Interment will be held at 2:30 pm at Sunset Hill Cemetery, Littleton, NC.

Family and friends will be received at the residence.

Josephine Sykes Harp, 83, of Roanoke Rapids passed away on Sunday, January 7, 2018.

She was born in Portsmouth, VA, to the late Robert Jackson and Pearl Mae Chitty Sykes. Josephine was also a member of Roanoke Baptist Church in Roanoke Rapids.

Josephine is survived by her daughters, Helen H. Daniel and her husband Pete of Roanoke Rapids, Renee Hargrave of Roanoke Rapids; her son David Earl Harp and his wife Chrystal of Roanoke Rapids; six grandchildren, Mike Harp, Jr. Paul Daniel, Melissa Carter, Steven Hargrave, Josaha Hargrave and Kristen Hargrave; one great-grandchild; four great-great-grandchildren and her special cousin, Loraine LaClair and her husband Brian of Chesapeake, VA.

Memorial Services will be held at Roanoke Baptist Church in Roanoke Rapids, NC at 2:00 P.M. on Thursday, January 11, 2018 with Rev. Rick Rogers officiating.

Margaret Helen Vojtko Sing, 87, of Weldon, NC passed away on Sunday, January 7, 2018.

She was born in Middlesex, NJ, to the late John and Margaret Berticsh Vojtko. 

Margaret was a 1948 graduate of Perth Ambly High School in Perth Ambly, NJ, and she was a graduate of Lincoln Memorial University in Tennessee and the College of Graduate Studies of W. VA.

Margaret is survived by her daughter, Jane Dimitrio of Roanoke Rapids, NC; her son, Thomas Dimitrio of Weldon, NC; her sister, Elizabeth McGrath of Ormond Beach, FL; her brother, Joseph Vojtko and his wife Susan of Ormond Beach, FL and several nieces and nephews. 

She was a Loving Mother and will be sadly missed by all who knew her, “We love you Mom.”

A memorial Service for Margaret will be held at a later date.

Charles Ray Smith, 71, passed away Friday, January 5, 2018 at UNC Rex Healthcare in Raleigh.

Charles was born November 25, 1946 in Halifax County to the late Lee Mack Ray Smith and Martha Jane Flora Smith and his sister, Carolyn Smith.

He was a loving father and grandfather.

Charles is survived by his son, Cameron Smith and his wife Amy; his grandchildren, Kasey, Erin and Austin Smith; his sister, Martha Moran and her husband Jim; his niece Ashley Warner and her husband Walt and his great niece Hayden Warner.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 P.M. Friday, January 12, 2018 at Ebenezer United Methodist Church with Rev. Steve Formo officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:30 – 2:00 P.M. at the church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Ebenezer United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, c/o Cindy Shearin, 10001 Aurelian Springs Road, Littleton, NC 27850.
