Jimmy Norfleet Brown Sr.

Mr. Jimmy Norfleet Brown Sr., age 82, passed away Wednesday, October 26, 2016.

Mr. Brown was born October 6, 1934 in Bertie County, NC, the son of the late John Brown and Bertha Hoggard Brown. He was also predeceased by his wife, Hazel Brown, a daughter Barbara Brown Pearce, his brothers and sisters, Joseph Brown, Evelyn Brown Tripp, Ella Leigh Brown Clark, Raymond Brown. Curtis Brown, J.D. Brown and Woodrow Brown. He was a retired mechanic.
He is survived by his daughter Vicki Brown Collier and her husband Ricky, his sons, Jimmy N. Brown Jr. and Joseph Brown. A long time special friend, Robin Hoggard. A sister, Lillian Gandee, A brother, Bobby Brown. His grandchildren, Sharon Knowles, Melinda Myers, Matthew Myers, Karen Williams, and Megan Williams. His great grandchildren, Mason Palazzolo, Eisley Myers, Kaleigh Williams and Waden Williams.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 29, 2016 at 2:00 PM at Woodland Full Gospel Church in Woodland, NC. Burial will follow at
Stoney Creek Cemetery in Ahoskie, NC.
The family will receive friends at the home of his granddaughter Melinda Myers, 2222 Hwy 13 North, Ahoskie, NC Friday from 7:00 until 8:30 PM.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 pm, with a Visitation prior to the Funeral, from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm, on Saturday, October 29, 2016 at First Baptist Church, 250 Webb Hill Street, in Roanoke Rapids, NC. The Interment will take place immediately after the Service in the Jones Family Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids, NC.

Andrew Alton Turner, 77, died at his home Tuesday, October 25, 2016.

Mr. Turner was born in Marble Rock, Iowa, August 2, 1939, and is preceded in death by his parents the late Ralph Preston and George Turner and Elizabeth Istad Preston Turner. After his service with the United States Air Force, Mr. Turner started his career in sales in Eastern North Carolina. He soon learned that with his deep and soothing voice, his niche was in broadcasting. He started “easy listening” radio stations from Pennsylvania to Texas and several states in between. In addition to his parents, Mr. Turner was also preceded in death by his brother, Mike Preston; father and mother-in-law, Mack and Hazel Rhea and his son-in-law, Andy Howard.
Surviving are his wife, Janet Rhea Turner, of the home; sons, Andrew “Andy” Alton Turner, Jr. and wife, Debbie, of Goldsboro, NC, Steven “Steve” Rhea Medlin and wife, Jenny, of Great Falls, VA; daughter, Lori Medlin Howard of Roanoke Rapids; sisters, Charlotte Parcher of Mason City, Iowa and Roma Jackson of Denison, TX. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Ashlie Turner Smith and husband, Dylan, Katlin “Katie” Elizabeth Howard, Matthew Steven Medlin and Brian Thomas Howard.
The family will receive friends at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service Saturday, October 29, 2016, from 5-7 pm. Dr. Lavell Waters will conduct funeral services at Quankie Baptist Church Sunday, October 30, 2016 at 3:00 pm followed by graveside services in the church cemetery.

Beatrice 'Bea' Tidwell Griffin

Beatrice “Bea” Tidwell Griffin was born in Jackson on January 23, 1920, and went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, October 25, 2016.

Bea was preceded in death by her parents, Simon and Elizabeth Tidwell, and her husband of 72 years, Joseph John Griffin. She was a member of Woodland Baptist Church in Woodland, North Carolina.
She is survived by her two sons, Robert Staten Griffin of Tampa, Fla. and Joseph Gary Griffin of Punta Gorda, Florida and one granddaughter Genoa Griffin Fedyszyn of St. Petersburg, Florida.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 2:00 on Wednesday, November 2, 2016 at Woodland Baptist Church in Woodland, North Carolina. The service will follow at 2:00. All arrangements are being handled by Massey Funeral Home in Jackson, North Carolina.

Burial will follow in the Bethlehem Baptist Church Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids.

Mr. Joe Cephus Lassiter age 82, of Ahoskie, NC passed away October 21, 2016 at his home.

Mr. Lassiter was born March 8, 1934 in Hertford County, NC, the son of the late Walter and Mary Lassiter. He was also preceded in death by a son, Andy Lassiter.
He is survived by his wife, Katherine Lassiter. His sons, Joe Lassiter and his wife Terry and Mike Lassiter and his wife Helen. His grandchildren, Dillon Lassiter, Chelesea Lassiter, Lofton Lassiter, Gracie Lassiter and Sandra Martin.
A Memorial Service to Celebrate Mr. Lassiter’s Life will be held Saturday, October 29, 2016 at 11:00 AM at Open Arm’s Church with Rev. Randy Miller officiating.
The family will receive friends at 10:00 AM prior to services at the church.

Rachel Keeter Hux

Rachel Keeter Hux, 78 of Roanoke Rapids passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 27, 2016 at her home.

Rachel was born December 23, 1937 in Halifax County to the late Sam F. Keeter and Mary Green Keeter. She was also preceded in death by her husband, W. B. Hux.

Rachel was faithful and dedicated member of Rosemary Baptist Church where she had served as deacon, as well as other roles. Rachel was actively involved in her community, she was a sitting Halifax County Commissioner, served on the Board of Trustees of Halifax Community College, Halifax County Business Horizons, as well as many other Boards. More importantly she Loved her children, grandchildren, family and serving the people of Roanoke Rapids and Halifax County.

Rachel is survived by her children, Jerry Hux, Robin Isles and her husband David; her grandchildren, Jordan, Sammy and Matt Isles all of Roanoke Rapids; her brothers and sisters, Ronald Luke Keeter and his wife Mary of Aurelian Springs, Linda Wrenn, Katherine Lee and her husband Glen both of Roanoke Rapids, Joan Webster and her husband Alvis of Graham and Tommy Keeter and his wife Polly of Gasburg,VA; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 P.M. Monday, October 31, 2016 at Rosemary Baptist Church with Dr. Layne Wallace and Rev. Randy Martin officiating. Burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 – 8:00 P.M. Sunday, October 30, 2016 at Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Service and other times at the home.

Rebecca “Becky” Sillery Newsome 60 of Roanoke Rapids, died Sunday October 30, 2106.

Becky was born in Newport, NC on January 3, 1956 to the late Charles Doyne and Janice Turnell Sillery. Becky was a registered nurse and worked for many years in the birthing center at Halifax memorial and Halifax regional medical center until her retirement this year.

Becky is survived by her daughter Amanda Newsome Tripp and her husband Johnny of Roanoke Rapids; her son Corey Newsome and his wife Tracey of Myrtle Beach, SC and her grandson John Cason Tripp.

Memorial services will be held Tuesday at 7 P.M. in the chapel of Askew Funeral and cremation services in Roanoke Rapids with Rev Ken Arrington officiating.

The family will receive friends after the service until 8:30 P.M.

Mr. Daniel W. Miller age 61, of Aulander, NC passed away Sunday, October 30, 3016 at Vidant Roanoke-Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie, NC.

Danny was born June 30, 1955 in Baltimore, Maryland, the son of the late Daniel Marvin Miller and Elizabeth Reed Miller. He was also predeceased by a son James Michael Miller, a grandson, Bruce Justin Miller and a sister Virginia Brickhouse.
Danny received his Associate Degree in Nursing at Vance-Granville Community College and worked at Northside Behavioral Health at Vidant Roanoke Chowan Hospital.
He is survived by his wife Vivian Bray Miller, his son, Jeffrey Skye Miller, three sisters, Joy Cooper, Jody Smith and Kim Comstock.
A Memorial Service to Celebrate Danny’s Life will be held Saturday, November 5, 2016 at 10:00 AM at Open Arms Church with Rev. Joe Lassiter
officiating.

Mr. Edward Burton Lee, age 80, of Jackson, NC passed away Monday, October 31, 2016 at Signature Health Care in Roanoke Rapids, NC.

Mr. Lee was born May 29, 1936 in Carnegie, Penn., the son of the late Raymond C. Lee and Alma Carrie Hawkins Lee.
He was a US Air Force Veteran and retired as an officer with the Federal Protection Bureau. He loved playing music and was an excellent musician.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Jones Lee. His daughter, Heather Caldwell and her husband Kelly. His granddaughter, Virginia Tamargo. Also a brother, Robert Allen Lee. His sister-in-law, Elaine Pearson and her husband Jimmy.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, November 3, 2016 at 2:00 PM at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson with Rev. Warren Heitzenrater officiating. Burial will follow at Jackson Cemetery.

Alice Hawkins Thompson, age 80, of Roanoke Rapids, NC passed away on Friday November 4, 2016.

A native of Halifax County, she was born on September 25, 1936 to the late Jim Davis and Carrie Daisy Hawkins. Alice was preceded in death by her husband, Monroe Edward Thompson; by her brothers Davis Hawkins, Van Hawkins, Hubert Hawkins and John Hawkins; her sisters, Clyde Hawkins, Maybell Hawkins, Bessie Shaw and Nellie Byerly.

Alice is survived by her daughter, Connie C. Rook and her husband, Gene of Roanoke Rapids; her granddaughter, Stefanie Long and her husband, Calvin of Roanoke Rapids; and her great-granddaughter, Emzlie Long of Roanoke Rapids.

A graveside service will be held on Sunday, November 6, 2016 at 2:30 P.M. at the Hawkins Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery with Rev. Henry Stephens officiating.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, November 5, 2016 from 7:00 to 8:30 P.M. at Askew Funeral and Cremation Services of Roanoke Rapids and other times at 225 Walter Ave. Roanoke Rapids, NC.

Becky was born July 22, 1952 in Cataret County to Benjamin C. Horrell and Margaret English Horrell. She was preceded in death by her father and her sister, Sheila Bennett.

She is survived by her mother, Margaret Horrell of Roanoke Rapids: her brothers and sisters, Randy Horrell and wife Debbie of Raleigh, Rev. John Mark Horrell and wife Sheida of Melbourne, FL, Rev. Justin Horrell of Quincy, FL, Holly Suggs, Jennifer Suggs, Austin Horrell and Kyran Boney all of Roanoke Rapids.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, November 8, 2016 at Roanoke Rapids First Pentecostal Holiness Church with Rev. John Mark Horrell, Rev. Matthew Smith and Rev. Justin Horrell officiating. Burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

Clyde Eddress Bush

Mr. Clyde Eddress Bush passed this life surrounded by his family and friends during his last moments on Friday, November 4, 2016 at UNC Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Bush was a native of Cannon County, TN. He was born March 9, 1933 to the late Suggs and Florence Parker Bush. He was also preceded in death by his son, Bobby E. Bush, Sr and his brother, Roy L. Bush.

Mr. Bush graduated from high school and joined the United States Army. After serving his country Mr. Bush joined the labor movement devoting his career to improving working conditions for men and women. He retired as Joint Board Manager from Roanoke Valley Southeastern Region Unite Union in 1996. Upon retiring Mr. Bush enjoyed spending time on his farm and being with family. He had a deep interest in politics, history, family genealogy and farming, all of which was rooted in his sincere desire to improve the lives of others.

Mr. Bush is survived by his loving wife, Helen Powell Bush; his daughters, Diane Jernigan and husband Danny and Debbie Stephens and husband Donnie of Manchester, TN; his son, Baker Bush of Murfreesboro, TN; his daughter-in-laws, Tammy Bush Sherrill and Janet Smith Bush; his grandchildren, Jeremy Jernigan and wife Andrea of Evansville, IN, Justin Jernigan and wife Stacy, Bobby E. Bush, Jr. and Jonathan Jernigan of Manchester, TN, Jessica Lowe and husband Jordon of McMinnville, TN, Kayla Ater and husband Ben and Josh Stephens of Manchester, TN, Jadon Bush and Jordon Bush of Murfreesboro, TN; ten great-grandchildren. Mr. Bush is also survived by countless nieces, nephews, cousins and many lifelong friends.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 A.M. Monday, November 7, 2016 at New Testament Christian Church with Daniel West, Minister officiating. Burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery. His Grandson’s will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends Sunday, November 6, 2016 at Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Service, 507 Hwy 158, Roanoke Rapids, NC 27870 from 6:00 m- 8:00 P.M.

A memorial service is planned for Saturday, November 12, 2016 at New Union Church of Christ in Manchester, TN where family will receive friends at 4:00 P.M. Services will be conducted by Brother Charles Williams at 5:30 P.M. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Parker Hill Cemetery Fund, c/o Jim Bush, 187 Rodgers Road, Bradyville, TN 37026.

Gertie was born August 17, 1944 in Halifax County, NC, the daughter of the late Lonnie D. Green,Sr, and Gertie Nelson Green. She was also preceded in death by her husbands Alvin Clements and Willie Crews. she worked for many years with New Dixie Oil Corp. and also operated Gertie's Family Store. She is survived by her children Minnie Johnson and husband Ray Bradley of Gaston, NC, George Clements and wife Kathi of Bracey VA and Betty Wilhelm of Woodford VA. Also survived by her grandchildren Christian Love and her husband Brett, she was also her caregiver ,Tori Johnson of Gaston NC, Tara Johnson and her boyfriend Brian Taylor of Roanoke Rapids, her grandsons Edward and Jason Dunlow of Woodford, VA and Adam Clements. Her great grandchildren Joshua Linton, Aaidan and Jaelynn Bryant, Bella Ayersman, and Alayna and Noah Love. She is also survived by her sister Lonie Hawley and her husband William of Chester, VA, James Green and his wife Lynn of Spring Hope, NC, Lonnie Green of Oklahoma and Howard Green of Chester, VA.
The funeral service will be Tuesday, November 8, 2016 at 11:00 AM at Massey Funeral Home. Burial will follow at the Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids.

Herbert B. Reese, 90 of Hwy 48, Roanoke Rapids passed away Monday, November 7, 2016 at his home.

Mr. Reese was born July 6, 1926 in Nash County to the late James Cornelius Reese and Magnolia Bryant Reese. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Owen M. Reese; his sisters Mae Tripp and Anne Bedgood.

Mr. Reese is survived by his sons, Michael W. Reese and his wife Lucinda of Roanoke Rapids and Roy Warwick and wife Christy of Gasburg, VA; his grandchildren, Braxton Reese and wife Amy, Lance Reese and wife Angel, Travis Reese and wife Annie, Aaron Warwick and Eathan Warwick; his great-grandchildren, Courtney, Katie, Owen, Logan, Dylan, Hayden, Jakob and Lily; his brother, J.W. Reese; his sisters, Rachel Harlow and Jeanette Clary all of Roanoke Rapids.

Graveside services will be held 2:00 P.M. Friday, November 11, 2016 at Crestview Memorial Cemetery with Greg Hand, Minister officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:30- 1:30 P.M. Friday at Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Service.

Joseph 'Joe' Arnold Peterson

Joseph “Joe” Arnold Peterson 69, of Roanoke Rapids passed away on Friday, November 11, 2016.

A native of Halifax County Joe was preceded in death by his father Maryland “Buddy” Peterson.

Joe was retired from Dominion Power after 47 years as the reservoir supervisor.

Joe was past President of the Roanoke Rapids Lions Club and was past Governor of the NC Lions club. He was a Jaycee; he loved cooking and was a four time state champion of the NC whole hog cook off. He was involved in many local organizations and fundraisers to help others in his community. Joe was a lover of the land and water, he dearly loved fishing the Roanoke River and hunting in Halifax County.

Joe is survived by his wife, Joan Cooke Peterson, their daughter, Beth P. White and Chris Fitts of Darlington and their son Jody Peterson and his wife, Melissa of Roanoke Rapids, three grandsons, William Jacob White, Joseph Zachery White and Jaxson Aaron Peterson; his mother, Annie Wagner of Rocky Mount; his sister Barbara Jean Silver of Roanoke Rapids; two brothers, Robert Peterson of Roanoke Rapids, Jerry Peterson of Littleton; brother and sister-in-law Rodger and Toshi Cooke of Scottsdale, Arizona and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Monday November 14, 2106 at 2 P.M. in the chapel of Askew funeral and cremation services with Rev. Sue Owens officiating.

Arrangements are being handled by Askew Funeral and Cremation Services in Roanoke Rapids, where the family will receive friends Sunday from 3-4:30 p.m.

Nola Evans Jones, 86 of Zoo Road South, Roanoke Rapids passed away Sunday, November 13, 2016 at her home.

She was born October 26, 1930 to the late Harold Jackson Waters and Martha Carlisle Waters Gordon. She was also preceded in death by her husbands, Andrew Evans and Arthur Jones; her brother, Bonnie Waters; her sister Mildred Snowden.

Nola was a member of Harvest Temple Pentecostal Holiness Church. She was a retired seamstress. Nola was a loving mother, grandmother and nanny, a true matriarch of the family. She was a dear friend to all who knew her and helped everybody that she could.

She is survived by her children, Frank Evans (Susan) of Gaston, Thenie Cullom, Mildred Ogburn and Judy Warren (Eddie) all of Roanoke Rapids; her step-children, Sandra Woodruff (Lewis), Nelson Jones (Kathy) and Linda Jones; her grandchildren, Angela Wright (Frank, Jr.), Frankie Evans, David Cullom, Gary Cullom (Jessica), Andrew Ogburn (Megan), Derek Ogburn (Libby), Michael Parks, Christopher Warren; her step-grandchildren, Artie, Elizabeth, Laura and Heather; her great-grandchildren, Rachel, Alexis, Little Dave, Olivia, Brice, Caleb, Carson, Maxton, Haleigh and Brianna; many step great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews; and a special thanks to her caregivers, Charlotte Brickell, Jess Gagnon and Dr. Mario Fiorilli.

Jean Reese Stansbury 86 of Roanoke Rapids NC passed away Wednesday, Nov 16, 2016 at the home of her daughter in N. Prince George, VA following an extended illness.

Mrs. Stansbury was born October 23, 1930 in South Hill, VA to the late James Milton and Gilberta Reese.

She was a long-time member of Lakeview Park Baptist Church. Mrs. Stansbury was a loving mother, Mimmie and Great-Mimmie. She was an example to her family and friends of the importance of a Christian walk.

In addition, to her parents she is preceded in death by her husband of 54 years Alvin Edward
Stansbury, Sr.; her brother Albert Reese of South Hill, Va, Thomas Reese of Ebony, Va, and James Reese of Colonial Heights, Va.; and her sister Elsie Parrish of South Hill, Va;
and several brother-in laws and sister-in laws.

She is survived by her daughter Brenda (Gayle) Stansbury Horne and husband Danny of
N. Prince George, Va; son Alvin Edward Stansbury, Jr. and wife Faye of Prince George, Va; grandsons Bryan Horne and wife Tina of Chester, Va. and Todd Horne and wife Tracie of
N. Prince George, Va.; granddaughters Lindy Iles and husband Dave and Rebecca Sprague and husband Chris both of Prince George, Va. and great grandchildren Cole, Emma, Abbey,

Funeral services will be held Sunday, November 20, at 3:00 PM at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service with Pastor Randy Martin officiating. Burial will follow in Cedarwood
Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids, NC.

The family will receive friends Saturday, November 19, 2016 from 7:00 to 8:30 PM at
Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service and all other times at her home at 449 Zoo Rd. North in Roanoke Rapids, N.C.
