J. Glenn Williams

Mr. J. Glenn Williams, passed away at his home in Roanoke Rapids early Saturday morning at the age of 88.  

Mr. Williams a native of Roanoke Rapids was born September 18, 1926 to the late Eli Buren and Effie Nethercutt Williams.  

Glenn proudly served in the military during both World War II and the Korean War,  after which he continued with the government in civil service combat systems for more than 25 plus years, retiring from Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Norfolk, Va.  

In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his brothers, J. Calvin and Paul L. Williams; and his son Steve Alan Williams.

Glenn is survived by his wife of 17 years, Mrs. Margaret G. Williams; his daughters Glenda Williams of Littleton; and Rhonda Williams Stern of Halifax; his youngest brother David Eli Williams of TX.  He is also survived by his grandsons Michael Hux and Jason Hux.  

A memorial service will be held Saturday, December 27, 2014 at 1:00 PM in the chapel of Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service with Rev. Bob Redmond officiating.

Reber Paul

Paul Cribb of Roanoke Rapids, NC, passed away on December 23rd after an extended illness.  He was surrounded by the family who cherished him.  

Paul Cribb was a true family man who loved his family.  He was preceded in death by the love of his life and wife of 49 years, Elizabeth Cribb.  He is survived by his wife Virginia Cribb who cherished him and extended his life with her love and devotion. He will be greatly missed by his children, Paul Cribb, Jr, and wife Donna, Suzie Cribb Harton and husband, John, Cindy Cribb Tyler, and husband Kevin, Troy Cribb and wife Donna, Kevin Cribb and wife Candal. He has grandchildren and great grandchildren who also held a place in his heart and will miss him dearly.

 Paul started and finished his career with Roses Stores.  He started in the stockroom with a $4 per pay period check, to being promoted to Assistant Manager, Manager, and Regional Manager,  He loved his work and his employees.

 He was a true Wolfpack fan with 3 of his children attending NC State. His NC State Christmas tree will shine brightly in his honor this year.

 There was a celebration of life held at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service Wednesday, December 24, 2014 at 11:00 am, officiated by Rev. Jeremy Kobernat.

 Dad spent his youth at Kennedy Home in Kinston, NC, part of the Baptist Childrens Home, where the other orphans were his brothers and sisters and the first place he truly felt loved and wanted.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation made in his memory to Kennedy Home.  Please contact Brian Baltzell at bdbaltzell@bchfamily.org.  The funds will go directly to that facility.

Connie Glover Meadows, 71, died peacefully Thursday, December 25, 2014, at Halifax Regional Medical Center.  

Connie was born in Watauga, TN, June 3, 1943, to the late Carl Glover and Beatrice Barnett Glover.

 In addition to her parents, Connie was preceded in death by her husband, Homer Meadows, Jr.  Also preceding her in death were infant twin brothers, and several aunts.

Surviving are her daughter, Martha Ellen Meadows, with whom she made her home for many years; special uncle, Aaron F. Glover and daughter, Diane Glover Carr and her family of Tennessee.  Also surviving is her “four-legged” granddaughter, Sable.

A special thanks goes to Dr. Mario Fiorilli and his nurse, Aimee Turner, for their excellent care, as well as, her Gentiva Home Health Team of Belinda Medlin, RN, Tim Allen, PT and Carol Hagan, CNA; also to special friends, Rosa Paschall of Wilson, NC, Loraine Coker of Gaston, NC, Christine Williams of Roanoke Rapids, NC and Sheila Shaw of Canton, NC.   

The family will have a private service to celebrate Connie’s life at a later date.

Joyce Virginia Griffith Casper

Joyce Virginia Griffith Casper age 69 of Murfreesboro, NC passed away on December 26, 2014 at her home surrounded by her loving family.

Mrs. Casper was born December 24, 1945 in Hertford County North Carolina the daughter of the late Lucille Hedgepeth Vann and Nathaniel Griffith.

Joyce will be remembered first and fore most as a wonderful mother, wife and grandmother too her two boys. She was a dedicated member to Ashley’s Grove Baptist Church her entire life, too her community and those she served through home health care.

Survivors include her husband Bobby Ray Casper of Murfreesboro, NC; Daughter Tambra Vann Johnson and husband Michael of Winterville, NC and two grandsons Colton Blake Johnson and Gavin Michael Johnson; Step sons Kenneth Ray Casper and wife Andrea of Shallotte, NC and Bobby Deryl Casper also of Shallotte, NC; Two sisters Annie and Mildred; Three brothers Billy, Dennis and Bobby; Special sisters Katherine Skinner and Clonnie Frances; Sister-in-law Shirley Campbell; Brothers-in-law Richard Casper and his wife Carolyn and Wayne Casper.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, December 30, 2014 at 2:00 PM at Ashley’s Grove Baptist Church with Rev. David Ross and Rev. J.N. Baggett officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends Monday, December 29, 2014 at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson, NC from 6:00 until 8:00 PM

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Ashley’s Grove Baptist Church or Community Home Care & Hospice of Roanoke Rapids, NC. Per Mrs. Casper’s request if you choose to send flowers, please send those flowers that can be replanted to live on in her memory.

Virginia Lassiter Staples

Virginia Lassiter Staples age 90 of Jackson passed away December 27, 2014 at Pine Forest Rest Home in Potecasi, NC.

Virginia was born December 27, 1924 in Northampton County North Carolina the daughter of the late Benjamin Cartland Lassiter and Gertie Maude Bryant Lassiter. Mrs. Staples was also preceded in death by her first husband Thomas Newsome, her second husband Luther “L.B.” Staples and her son Larry Newsome.

Survivors include her daughter Pamela Newsome Bennett and husband Eric of Selma, NC; Six grandchildren Jonathan Newsome and wife Christy of Lasker, NC, Phillip Newsome of Lasker, NC, Adam Newsome and his wife Jessica of Severn, NC, Heather Newsome Futrell and her husband Wynn of Murfreesboro, NC and Tillman and Oliva Bennett of Selma, NC and six great-grandchildren.

A memorial service to celebrate the life of Virginia Staples will be held Wednesday, December 31, 2014 at Jackson Baptist Church at 11:00 AM with Rev. Warren Haizenberger officiating.

Hazel Cushing Clay Cox 81, of Roanoke Rapids, died Saturday December 27, 2014 at her home with her family by her side.

A native of Halifax County she was the daughter of the late William Edward and Bertha Hilton Cushing. She is also preceded in death by her husband Thomas Hugh Clay.

Hazel is survived by her daughters, Faye C. Gonzalez and her husband, Raul C. of Portsmouth, Va. and Iris C. Moseley and her husband, Howard S. of Roanoke Rapids; three sons, Steven H. Clay of Marietta , Ga.; Thomas Owen Clay and his wife, Pam of Orlando, Florida and Jimmy Clay and his wife, Mary Jane of Roanoke Rapids; her sister Betty Cushing Deberry of Roanoke Rapids; three grand children Jennifer Thompson, Jeffrey H. Arwood and James Eric Clay; two great grand children Matthew Arwood and Jackson Gautier.

Graveside Service will be held Tuesday December 30, 2014 at 11:00 A.M. at Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids with Rev. Randy Martin officiating.

Arrangements are being handled by Askew Funeral and Cremation Services in Roanoke Rapids.

 

Edward Wayne Legault

Edward Wayne Legault, age 59, of Tunis passed away on December 27, 2014 at his residence.

He was born on August 27, 1955 to John W. and Rose Spinale Legault in Lawrence, Massachusetts.

Edward worked as a truck driver for over twenty years. He loved spending time on the Chowan River boating with his family and friends. Edward was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose for a number of years. He loved his family and enjoyed spending time with his loving wife.

 He was preceded in death by his parents, and two siblings, Roger and Michelle Legault.

Edward is survived by his loving wife, Joy; nine siblings, Vivian and her husband Mark Yeargreau of New Hampshire, Jay Legault of Norfolk, VA, Frances Doucette of New Hampshire, Rose and her husband James Holden of New Hampshire, Arthur and his wife Lisa Legault of Massachusetts, Corinna Parker of Maine, Eugene Legault of Massachusetts, Mary and her husband Richard Ogiba of Massachusetts, and David Hatch of Massachusetts, along with several nieces and nephews, as well as, great nieces and nephews.

 A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 3, 2015, at 11:00 am at the Closer Walk Ministry Church, in Tunis, NC with Pastor Mike Blowe officiating. The family will receive friends in the church following the service.

Ada Bliss Moore Kirkland

Ada Bliss Moore Kirkland, 104, died Saturday, December 27, 2014, at Liberty Commons Nursing & Rehab Center.  

Bliss was born near Conetoe, NC, Edgecombe County, August 29, 1910, one of eleven children born to Julia Martha Brown Moore and David Oscar Moore.  She was a member of Victory Praise and Worship Center in Scotland Neck, NC and later attended First Pentecostal Holiness church in Roanoke Rapids, NC after moving there.  From an early age, God blessed her with a musical ability to play the piano, a talent which she has shared through the years at the churches she has attended.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest L. Kirkland; parents, Julia Martha Brown Moore and David Oscar Moore; six sisters, Cora Elizabeth Moore, Mable Chessie Cobourn, Martha Delphia Moore, Annie Gertrude Hale, Mary Elizabeth Moore , and Lillie Butler Bradshaw; four brothers, Posie Linwood Moore, Raymond Oscar Moore, David Raymond Moore and Joseph T. Moore.

Surviving is her sister-in-law, Josephine Harris Moore, of Roanoke Rapids, NC and numerous nieces and nephews from multiple generations. 

The family will receive friends Tuesday, December 30, 2014 from 6-8 pm at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service in Roanoke Rapids, which is handling arrangements.  Rev. Tony Smith will conduct a graveside service at Trinity Episcopal Cemetery in Scotland Neck, NC Wednesday, December 31, 2014, at 11:00 am.

For those not familiar with the Scotland Neck area, you are welcome to meet at the funeral home no later than 10:00 am, where a member of the funeral home staff will lead you to the cemetery.

Eldridge Lee Emery

Elridge Lee Emery age 79, of Roanoke Rapids, NC  died Monday, December 29, 2014 at Halifax Regional Medical Center in Roanoke Rapids.

Elridge was born October 4, 1935 in Roanoke Rapids, NC, the son of the late Floyd Emery and Eunice Jeans Emery.  He operated service station’s in Roanoke Rapids, was service manager at Goodyear and Firestone Tire Center’s in Roanoke Rapids. In later years he was a correctional officer at Caledonia Prison for a number of years.

Elridge was also a charter member of the Roanoke Valley Rescue Squad where he had served a Commander and also as Captain for a number of years.  He was a member of First Baptist Church in Roanoke Rapids.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Anne Ross Emery.  His son, Lee Emery and his wife Tammy of Roanoke Rapids.  His grandson, Bryan Emery and his wife Hannah of Greenville, NC. 

Memorial services will be held Saturday, January 3, 2015 at 2:00 PM at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids with Rev. Julian Mills officiating. 

The family will receive friends after the service at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Hubert 'Miles' Edwards Jr.

Hubert “Miles” Edwards, Jr., 77, of Roanoke Rapids, died Monday, December 29, 2014.  

He was the son of the late Hubert Miles Edwards, Sr. and Virginia Dare Hardison Edwards.  He was also preceded in death by his wife Alyce Constance “Connie” Edwards.

He is survived by his sons, Douglas Erwin Edwards of Pittsboro and Sean Owen Edwards of Roanoke Rapids; his granddaughter, Ashley Edwards Deaton and her husband, Wes of Roanoke Rapids; his grandson, Corbin Miles Edwards of Pittsboro; his great grandson, Brayden Miles Deaton; his brother, James Erwin Edwards of Charlotte; his sisters, Winifred Ingram and her husband, Donald of Rock Hill, SC, Mary Ellen Shook and her husband, Jimmie of Garner; and his very special friend, Wilma White of Roanoke Rapids. 

Graveside services will be held on Friday, January 2, 2015 at 2:00 pm at Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids with Rev. Randy Martin officiating. Family will receive friends on Friday, January 2, 2015 from 12:45 to 1:45 pm at Askew Funeral and Cremation Services.

Elizabeth “Liz” Yvonne Smith, 83, of Roanoke Rapids passed away on Thursday, January 1, 2015.  

She was the daughter of the late Reba Seuis Green.  She was also preceded in death by her son, Millard Julian Smith.

She is survived by her daughters, Brenda S. Thompson and her husband, Jesse of Littleton, Terri Smith and Angie Poythress, both of Roanoke Rapids; her sons, Bryan Spacek and his wife, Sandy of Chapel Hill and Mark Smith of Roanoke Rapids; her very special niece, Jill Miles of Littleton; her brother, Fred Leon West of Appomattox, VA; 12 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.

Liz enjoyed her family, especially her grandchildren, working in her yard and loved her flowers and birdhouses.

Family will receive friends on Monday, January 5, 2015 at 11:00 AM at First Pentecostal Holiness Church in Roanoke Rapids followed by a Memorial Service at 12:15 PM with Rev. Margaret Horrell officiating.

Dorothy 'Dot' Elks Keeter

Dorothy “Dot” Elks Keeter, 92, of Halifax, died peacefully on Monday, January 5, 2015 at Hampton Manor in Gaston, NC.  “Aunt Dot” loved to sew, cook, and shop and perfected all of those hobbies.

She was the daughter of the late Alma Harris Elks and was also preceded in death by her brother, James O. Elks and her niece, Dee Elks Clifton.

She is survived by her nephew, Jeff Elks and his wife, Tracy of Weldon; her nieces, Lorri Phillips of New Bern, Tina Carr and her husband, David of Halifax; her great niece, Michaela Phillips of Locust Grove, VA; and several other special nieces, nephews, and special friends.

Dot was a member of Wilroy Baptist Church in Suffolk, VA.  She went to work for Lipton Tea Company in 1955 where she worked until her retirement after 28 years.

Graveside services will be held on Thursday, January 8, 2015 at 1:00 PM at Crestview Cemetery with Rev. Randy Martin officiating.

Sarah Geneva Pierce, age 78 passed away January 7, 2015 at the Bryan Center Health & Rehab. in Windsor, NC.

Sarah was born October 18, 1936 in Martin County North Carolina.

Survivors include her husband Henry Earl Pierce of Windsor, NC and many loving family and friends.

A memorial service to celebrate the life of Sarah Pierce will be held at a later date. The Massy Funeral Home candle of remembrance will burn in remembrance memories and the life of Sarah Pierce.

Charles Monroe Ferguson

Charles Monroe Ferguson, died January 7, 2015.  

He was born July 23, 1942 to Jasper Monroe and Mary Gray Ferguson.  

He was raised on the family farm in Northampton County.  He was a farmer, plumber and truck driver during his life span.

 In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his sister Minnie Joe Lynch.  

He is survived by his children, Warner Monroe and wife Charlotte of Gaston; Laura Dickens of Gaston; and Charles Thomas and wife Ashley of Virginia Beach; 9 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; two sisters Frances Carrol of Gaston; and Eva Clyde Butler of Richmond, Va.  

He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.  He had many Facebook friends that he enjoyed conversing with.

 The family will have a private service at a later date.

William Daniel 'Danny' Martin

Mr. William Daniel “Danny” Martin age 60, of Woodland, NC passed away Thursday, January 8, 2015 at Vidant Roanoke-Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie, NC.

Danny was born April 26, 1954 in Halifax County, NC, the son of the late William Croman Martin and Jane Draper Martin Powers.

 He was a mechanic. He was owner of Martin Motor Sports and Garage in Woodland. 

He was a volunteer with the Woodland Fire Department and also volunteered for ten years with the Woodland Rescue Squad.  

He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and brother.

He is survived by his wife Norma Jean Martin.  His three children, Amanda Lezon  and her husband Jay of Chesapeake, VA, William Daniel Martin Jr. of Woodland and Brian Jason Martin of Milwaukee, NC.  His grandson, Roman Austin Dean Martin of Conway. Two half brothers, Wilson Powers of Chicago and  James Powers of Conway.

A Memorial Service to Celebrate the Life of Danny will be held Sunday, January 11, 2015 at 2:00 PM at Potecasi Baptist Church with Rev. Rick Browder officiating.

The family will receive friends after the service at the home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Woodland Fire Department.

Arrangements are being handled by Massey Funeral Home in Jackson.

James Edward Evans Sr.

James Edward Evans, Sr, 86, of Roanoke Rapids, passed away on Sunday, January 11, 2015.

He was born on August 24, 1928 to the late Isaac Leonard “Lynn” and Senora “Nora” Henderson Evans.  James served his country in the United States Army.  He was an avid fisherman, loved to play pool and ride his bike.

He is survived by his wife, Emma Sewell Evans; his sons, James “Jimmy” E. Evans, Jr. and his wife, Sue of Littleton, Barry S. Evans and his wife, Kelly of Roanoke Rapids; his grandchildren, Kristy Griffin, Michael Evans, Scott Barefoot, Valerie Turnage, Elizabeth Evans, Matthew Evans; his great grandchildren, Bland Turnage, Carson Griffin, Graci Barefoot, and Will Barefoot.

Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, January 14, 2015 at 2:00 PM at the chapel of Askew Funeral and Cremation Services with Dr. Layne Wallace officiating. 

Interment will follow at Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids.

 

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, January 13, 2015 from 7:00 to 8:30 PM at Askew Funeral and Cremation Services in Roanoke Rapids.

Betty L. Tyler

Betty L. Tyler

Betty L. Tyler (Barnes) passed to her eternal home surrounded by her family on January 11, 2015.

She fought cancer with courage being involved with her treatment at all times. She never let it stop her from doing whatever she wanted to do until she could do no more.  

She and Al traveled to blue grass festivals, particularly for the gospel music.

She is survived by her husband, Albert Barnes, sister June ”Paige” Davis, brother-in-law Everette Davis, niece, Jackie Davis Pufky (John), nephew William Davis, two great nephews Gavin and Mitchell Pufky, grandchildren Amanda Trent Barnes (Brandon) and Edwin Trent, Jr., and one great grandchild, Lucas Barnes (Poodie Cakes). 

Betty was a graduate of Johnston-Willis Nursing School and worked as a surgical nurse for many years before becoming the data base administrator for the Department of Anesthesia at VCU Medical Center from which she retired.

The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson Tuesday, January 13, 2015, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

A graveside service will be held Wednesday, January 14, 2015 at 1:00 PM at Severn Cemetery, Severn, NC.

A Memorial Service will also be held Friday, January 16, 2015 at 2:00 PM at Skipwith Methodist Church.

Her smile and delightful sense of humor will truly be missed by all.

Evelyn Marie Martin Strickland

 Mrs. Evelyn Marie Martin Strickland age 83 of Ahoskie, NC and formerly of Rich Square died Monday, January 12, 2015 at Creekside Care Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Mrs. Strickland was born September 9, 1931 in Northampton County, NC, the daughter of the late Ravie Martin and Ruby Askew Martin.  

She was also predeceased by her husband, John Strickland, a daughter Rose Strickland and a son, Randy Strickland. She was a member of Bethany United Methodist Church.

She is survived by a son, Johnny Strickland, her sisters, Mona Martin Rose and Virginia Martin Gilliam, and her brother Marvin Martin. Also her grandchildren, Kelli Witcher and her husband Jason and Richard Strickland and his wife Amy.  Her great grandchildren, Joeb Whitcher, Hannah Witcher and Kamdya Strickland.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 17, 2015 at 2:00 PM at Bethany United Methodist Church in Milwaukee with Rev. Mike Blowe and Rev. Suzanne Cobb officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Lawn Cemetery in Rich Square.

Memorial contributions may be made to Bethany United Methodist Church.

Michael Grant 'Mike' Newsome

Michael Grant Newsome, 67, of Roanoke Rapids, died Friday, January 16, 2015 at his home.

Mike, a native of Roanoke Rapids, was the son of the late Frank John Newsome and Geraldine Butler Rowbottom and his step father, William A. Rowbottom.

Mike was retired from the City of Roanoke Rapids and was an avid NC Tarheel fan.  Most of all, he was a beloved coach in the area, coaching men and women’s teams, but his love was the many youth teams that he coached throughout his life.  

Mike had coached at Roanoke Christian School, Chaloner Middle School, Halifax Academy, Roanoke Rapids High School, KIPP Pride High School, and many summer league travel teams.

He is survived by his wife, Jeane Myrick Newsome; his sisters, Peggy Graumlich and her husband, James of Peoria, IL, Patricia Grooms and her husband, Fred of Roanoke Rapids; his brother, Linwood Newsome and his wife, Nancy of Whittier, NC; his niece, Sara G. Memorial services will be held on Sunday, January 18, 2015 at 2:30 PM at Rosemary United Methodist Church with Rev. Bob Redmond officiating.  The family will receive friends following the service in the fellowship hall.
