Mr. Cola Harrison age 89, of Ahoskie, NC, passed away Tuesday, December 15, 2015, at Vidant Roanoke Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie, NC.

Mr. Harrison was born September 29, 1926, in Bertie County, NC, the son of the late Lonnie Harrison and Rosa White Harrison. He was also preceded in death by his former wives, Jesse Mae Vaughan Harrison, Irene Overton Harrison and Elsie Piland Harrison.
He was a charter member of Higher Ground Pentecostal Holiness Church, a Board Member, faithful, and a devoted statesman of Higher Ground Church .
He is survived by his daughter, Angela Smithwick. Eight step-children, Donald Overton, Johnny Overton, Brenda Piland, Rena Stroud, Tom Piland, June Garris, Vicky Piland and Rebecca Bailey. Two grandchildren, William Brown and Justin Smithwick and several step-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held Friday, December 18, 2015, at 2:00 PM at Ahoskie Cemetery with Rev. Ray Faircloth officiating.
The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Aulander, NC, Thursday, December 17, 2015, from 6:00 until 8:00 PM.

Mrs. Mildred Irene Parker Stephenson age 98, of Seaboard,  passed away Saturday, December 19, 2015.

Mrs. Stephenson was born June 14, 1917, in Northampton County, NC, the daughter of the late W.T. and Bessie Howell Parker. She was also predeceased by her husband Samuel B. Stephenson, her son, Samuel P. Stephenson and her siblings, John Parker, Iva Cordle and William Parker.
A quiet and gentle lady who was affectionately know as “Mil” to her family, she is survived by her son, Joel Stephenson and his wife, Debbie of Weldon, NC, her two granddaughters, Lynn Barefoot and her husband Wesley of Four Oaks, NC, Beth Pelter and her husband David of Raleigh, NC, and her four grandchildren, Nicole, Ava, Jordan and Lily and several nieces and nephews.
Mil enjoyed sharing her love of cooking and baking with her family and friends. She also loved reading cookbooks, playing bridge and gardening.
The family wishes to express their gratitude to Mil’s caregivers who were so kind and faithful to her.
Services will be held at Seaboard Baptist Church, where she was a member,  Tuesday, December 22, 2015 at 11:00 AM with Rev. Jim Cox officiating.
The family will receive friends Sunday, December 20, 2015 at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson, NC from 3:00 until 5:00 PM.

Jesse Lee Hobbs, 80, died Monday, December 21, 2015, at his residence in Oxford, NC.

Mr. Hobbs was born in Greensville County, VA, April 5, 1935, to the late Otha Hobbs and Eunice Norwood Hobbs.

He served his country for more than 20 years in the Army National Guard and also was a tree climber for Asplundh for more than 20 years.

His children loved him and will miss him dearly.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Hobbs was preceded in death by his two grandsons, Ollie Bowling and Timothy “Timbo” Hobbs.

Surviving are his children, Roberta Hobbs of Oxford, NC, Teresa Taylor of Littleton, NC, Richard Hobbs of Gasburg, VA, and Todd Hobbs and wife, Donna, of Lawrenceville, VA. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Chris and wife, Angie, Tiffany, Jesse, and Josh.

The family will receive friends at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service Wednesday, December 23, 2015 from 6:00 to 8:30 pm.

Pastor Bobby Griles will conduct a graveside service at Fountain Creek Baptist Church Cemetery Thursday, December 24, 2015, at 11:00 am.

Beverley was born January 10, 1960, the daughter of the late Mike Wilkerson and Mary Wilkerson.
She is survived by her husband, David Dupuy, her step-father, Douglas Brewer, her half brother, Zane Brewer and her adopted family Susan and Dale Piland and their children Valerie and Christy.

Jasolyn Averie Schaller, infant daughter of Melanie Cox Schaller and Jason Andrew Schaller, passed away Christmas Day, December 25, 2015 at Halifax Regional Medical Center in Roanoke Rapids.

She was predeceased by her grandfather, Mickal Schaller, paternal great grandfather, Jim Nichols, her great grandparents, AC Patty, Janice Patty, Billy Cox, and her great great grandparents George and Ola Storey and Fletcher and Louise Brown Merritt.
In addition to her parents she is survived by her sister, Noelle Johnette Moore, her maternal grandparents, Nanette and John Cox, her paternal grandmother, Beverly Schaller, Her uncles, Mickal and Skipper Schaller and Scott Cox. Her paternal great grandmother, May Nichols, her maternal great grandparents, Jimmy and Dorothy Storey.
Services will be held Monday, December 28, 2015 at 1:00 PM at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids with Rev. Jeremy Kobernat officiating.

Donald Thomas Fly, 69, passed away Sunday, December 27, 2015. He was born December 25, 1946 in Nash County to the late Garrett and Irma Fly. Donald loved his family and loved beach music. He refereed high school baseball and basketball for 41 years.
He is survived by his son, Brad Fly (Katie) of Holden Beach; grandsons, Jack and Hank; brothers, Garrett “Bud” Wayne Fly (Kathie) and Ron Fly (Jan) of Goldsboro; sisters Ann Parker and Sandra Lamm (Billy) of Nashville and several special nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends Wednesday, December 30, 2015 from 6-8:00 p.m. at Cornerstone Funeral Home.

Mr. Garland Arnold Harris age 83, of Roanoke Rapids, NC passed away Saturday, December 26. 2015, at his home.

Mr. Harris was born March 12, 1932, in Ponca City, Oklahoma, the son of the late George Harris and Helen Moulton Harris.

He graduated from Syracuse University. He was a veteran of the US Army and served his country from 1954 -1956.

He was also preceded in death by his wife June Harris.
He is survived by his sons, Gary Harris and his wife Kathleen, Glenn Harris and his wife Dianne and Graigg Harris and his wife Elizabeth. His grandchildren, Cheyenne, Miranda, Andrew and Rebecca. His great grandchildren, Madison and Dakota. 

A Memorial Service will be held at a later date.
Arrangements are being handled by Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids.

Doris Krueger Stone, 75, died Thursday, December 24, 2015, at Vidant Healthcare in Greenville, NC.

Mrs. Stone was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, February 12, 1940, to the late Gerhard Paul Krueger and Helen Elsie Lohans Krueger.

She was a school teacher where she taught second grade.

After teaching and marriage, she became involved in many community organizations and became a strong voice in many community affairs.

After moving to the Lake Gaston area, she used those strengths and talents in her community and was a member of the Lake Gaston Lady’s Club. S

he was a lifelong Green Bay Packer’s fan and that was evident by her sweatshirt which stated, “I may live in North Carolina, but I am still a Packer’s fan.”

She loved her family dearly and was a loving wife and mother.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Stone was preceded in death by her brother, Donald.

Surviving are her husband of 51 years, Tim Franklin Stone of the home, and her son, Matthew Guy Stone of Portland, Oregon.

A service to remember Mrs. Stone’s life will be held at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service Tuesday, January 5, 2016, at 1:00 pm.

Mrs. Gregory was born January 14, 1937 in Halifax County, NC, the daughter of the late Raz Stansbury and Maude Carter Stansbury.

She was a member of Good Samaritan Baptist Church where she served as a faithful soul winner for her Lord.
She is survived by her husband Dr. Dennis W. Gregory Sr., her children, Tim Lambert and his wife Lisa and Tammy Carpenter. Her stepchildren, Sharon Miles and her husband Jay and Rev. Dennis W. Gregory Jr. and his wife Gail. Her half-brothers, Jessie Walker and Joe Beale. Her grandchildren, Lauren Lambert and her husband Justin Barlow, Timmy Lambert and his wife Caitlin, Kendall Carpenter, Chris Carpenter, J.W. Miles, Jennifer Glasgow and husband Buck, Brittany Gregory, Candice Gregory and Brandon Gregory. Frank was born November 27, 1960, in Norfolk, VA, the son of the late Frank Lewis Spence Sr. and Jean Kline Spence. He was a diesel mechanic for many years.

Alice Turner Perry, 72, died Tuesday, December 29, 2015, in Halifax Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Perry was born, May 26, 1943, in Halifax County to the late Henry Joe Love and Mary Brown Love.

She worked many years with JP Stevens, and later in life, was a caretaker.

She loved her cats, loved to sing and especially loved working in her yard.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Perry was preceded in death by her husbands, Roy Perry and Randall Junior Turner.

Surviving is her son, Randall Junior Turner II and fiancé, Teresa Michelle Connor and daughter, Glenda T. Browder and husband, Gary, all of Roanoke Rapids; grandchildren, Doniphan Browder and wife, Ashley, Travis Browder and fiancé, Meagan Medlin, Jessie Turner, Randall Turner III, and Robert Turner. Also surviving are four great grandchildren and two “on the way”

The family will receive friends Sunday, January 3, 2016, at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service from 6-8 pm.

Rev. Jimmy King will conduct funeral services Monday, January 4, 2016, at Good News Baptist Church at 11:00 am with interment to follow in Cedarwood Cemetery.

Earnest Max Grubb, 88 of Littleton passed away Friday, January 1, 2016.

Earnest was born May 16, 1927 in Davidson County to the late Ernest Grover Grubb and Minnie Lee Cutting Grubb. He was also preceded in death by his brother: Lanny Grubb; his sister: Mary Hill and his grandson: Andrew Grubb.

He was a charter member of Open Door Fellowship.

Earnest was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He served in the US Navy for 2 ½ years, where he served on the USS Pine Island and was part of Admiral Byrd’s Expedition to the South Pole.

He spent 24 ½ years in the US Air Force during WW II, Korea and Vietnam. He also retired from the NC Department of Corrections Caledonia Prison after 20 years. Earnest loved God, his country, his family and friends, he loved calling the Charlie Beaver Talk Show, outspoken, little gruff, but had a heart of gold, a very generous and caring person. Earnest was also known as the candyman at First Citizens Bank and State Employees Credit Union. After retirement he and his wife traveled extensively.

He is survived by his wife: Mary Cohen Grubb of 63 years, whom he married on Flag Day, his sons: Howard M. Grubb and his fiancé April Trew of Thomasville, NC and Edward M. Grubb and his wife Tamara of Littleton; his daughters: Rebecca Faison and her husband Cecil, Debra Shaw and her husband Julian and Carolyn Keeter and her husband Terry all of Roanoke Rapids; his brother: Steve Grubb of Denton, NC; his sisters: Betty Robinson of Orlando, FL, Barbara Carrick of Denton, NC and Don Rea Keith of Sanford, NC; his grandchildren: Timothy Cain and his wife Candie, Lisa Cain, Bradley Keeter and his wife Stacy, Jerrad Keeter, Gavin Keeter and Victoria Grubb; his great-grandchildren: Wyatt, Ella and Aubree Cain, Landen and Logan Daniel, Lily and Lawsen Keeter, Payton and Brantley Griffin.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 P.M. Monday, January 4, 2016 in the chapel of Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Service. The family will receive friends from 1:00 – 2:30 P.M. Monday at the funeral home and other times at the home of his daughter Carolyn Keeter. Burial will follow at Crestview Memorial Cemetery with Full Military Honors.

Lona was born December 1, 1926 in Conway, NC, the daughter of the late William E. Wall and Hattie Burgess Wall. She was also predeceased by her first husband, Hubert F. Storey and her second husband, Howard C. Simmons, her sisters sand brothers, Delphia W. Futrell, Ruth Wall Brown, Ennis J. Wall, Jesse Wall, Lokie Wall , Willie Mae Wall and also a nephew, Benjamin Wall Brown.
She was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.
She is survived by her stepson, Charles Simmons and his wife Sharon and their daughter, Amy and her step daughter, Charlotte Simmons Gupton and her husband Charles and their sons, Ryan and Scott. Her nieces Brenda B. Watson and her husband Parker and their son, Hank Fuller, Patsy Gravley and her children Jeff Gravley and Angie Thornton. Her nephew's wife, Susanne Brown and her son, David R. Brown and his daughter Haley. Also many other nieces and nephews and special friends.

Judith was born March 10, 1947, in Northampton County to the late Eddie Wardell Futrell and Sarah Elizabeth Little Futrell. She was also preceded in death by her husband Donald Phillips.
Judith was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She devoted her life to her family. She also loved helping others. Judith worked at JP Stevens, Bibb Companies and Westpoint Stevens for 32 years.
She is survived by her children: Sherry Baggett, Donald Phillips, Jr. both of Roanoke Rapids and Michelle Newsome Taylor and her husband Jerry of Halifax; her sisters: Kay Whitehead and her husband Gary of Scotland Neck and Melody Moseley and her husband Chris of Roanoke Rapids; her grandchildren: Mindy King and Sarah Phillips; her great-grandchildren: Adalyn Hudson and Brooklyn Carroll; her nieces and nephews: Lisa Martinez, Tonya Cruz, Billy Brown and Katie Moseley; her special friends: Michael Carroll, Kevin and Todd Delbridge and her church family.

Donald Ray Paynter, age 62, died Sunday, January 3, 2016, at Maria Parham Hospital.

He is preceded in death by his mother, Edna Stegall Paynter.

Donald was a member of Wise Baptist Church. He was his father's caretaker, Gizmo's best friend and companion, a drag racer as well as an avid drag racing fan.

Graveside funeral services will be held at 1:30 PM on Wednesday January 6, 2016, at Wise Baptist Church Cemetery.

She is survived by her devoted husband of 61 years, Ted M. Woodard, her daughters, Karen Gardner and her husband Bobby of Greenville, NC, and Teresa Montgomery and her husband Jeff of Elizabeth City, NC. Six grandchildren, John and Ben Watson, Shelley and Holly Garriss , Laura and Hunter Bright. One great granddaughter, Evi Watson. Also one sister, Louise Vann and her husband George Thomas Vann of Conway, NC.
