Joseph Bernard Harris, 77, died Saturday, September 26, 2015, at Duke University Hospital.

Joseph was born in Halifax County, December 18, 1937, to the late Jesse B. Harris and Jewel Harris. In addition to his parents, Joseph was preceded in death by his daughter, Janie Echerd.

Surviving is his wife, Glenda Jean Harris, of the home; two sons, Joseph “Joey” B. Harris, Jr. and wife Carol, of Midlothian, VA and Marty Dale Harris and wife, Samantha of Roanoke Rapids; three daughters, Trudy Campbell and husband, Vernon, of Rocky Mount, Debra O’Neal and husband, Dennis and Theresa Taylor and husband, Joe, both of Roanoke Rapids; two brothers, Danny Harris and Carlton Harris, both of Roanoke Rapids; two sisters, Geraldine Tripp of Roanoke Rapids, and Vicky Harris of Ahoskie. Also surviving are thirteen grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Rev. Frank Stansbury will conduct a memorial service to celebrate Joseph’s life, Wednesday, September 30, 2015 at 2:00 pm at South Rosemary Baptist Church.

Barbara Bottoms Phillips, age 59, passed away on Saturday, September 26, 2015.

She was the daughter of the late Harold Milton and Maude Williams Bottoms.

Barbara was a dedicated employee with Halifax Regional Medical Center for 35 years and was currently working for the Town of Weldon.

She is survived by her fiancé, Danny Clay of the home; Barbie Clay Calhoun and her husband, Chuck, Daniel Clay and his wife, Diane, Brandon Clay and his wife, April, all of Roanoke Rapids; seven grandchildren; and her life-long friends, Dena Wright, Jenny Lee, Clara Garris and Joanne Barrett.

Graveside services will be held on Wednesday, September 30, 2015 at Crestview Memorial Cemetery at 2:00 PM with Rev. Randy Martin officiating.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, September 29, 2015 from 7:00 to 8:30 PM at Askew Funeral and Cremation Services.

Ivey Mae Cooke Lassiter age 65, of Ahoskie, NC passed away Wednesday, September 30, 2015 at her home after a brief illness.

Mrs. Lassiter was born June 9, 1950, in Hertford County, NC, the daughter of the late Willie Cooke and Margaret Lane Shepard Cooke.
She is survived by her husband, Clarence Ray Lassiter, her son Kenneth Lassiter and a brother, Oscar Wayne Cooke. Also two grandchildren, Tina Marie Adkins and Ivey Lassiter.
A Memorial Service will be held at a later date.

Phillip Durwin Kidd Sr.

Mr. Philip Durwin Kidd Sr. age 60, of Rocky Mount, NC died Monday, September 21, 2015 at Nash General Hospital.

Mr. Kidd was born December 30, 1954 in Ebony, VA, the son of the late Richard Allen Kidd and Iva Marie Pierce Kidd.  He was also predeceased by a daughter, Rose Marie Kidd.

He is survived by his children, Philip Durwin Kidd Jr., William Thomas Kidd, Jennifer Lynn Kidd and Nicholas Wayne Kidd.  Four brothers, Allen Kidd, William Roscoe Kidd, Bobby Dale Kidd, and Cullen Cave Kidd.  His sister, Becky Kidd.

The family will have a special time together to Celebrate Mr. Kidd’s life.

Arrangements are being handled by Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids.

Christopher was born November 23, 1984 in Roanoke Rapids, NC. He was an electrician. He was preceded in death by his father, Timothy J. Finch, a grandmother, Snowdean Finch and an aunt, Amanda Lewter.
He is survived by his daughter, Natalie Finch and her mother Kristen Hammack . His mother Judy L Boyd and stepfather Andre of Littleton, NC. His brothers,
Michael Finch and his friend Tonya of Garner, Adam Pope of Wilson and a sister, Asya Boyd of Littleton. His maternal grandfather, Howerton Finch Sr. of Weldon. His paternal grandparents, James and Berniece Lewter of Roanoke Rapids. His uncles and aunts, Donnie Lewter, David Lewter and his wife Kelly, Michelle Jackson and her husband Doug, Gene Finch, Howerton Finch Jr, Angie Wright, Priscilla Edwards and her husband Dennis. His lifelong friend, Tyrone Garner and many cousins and other special friends.
Funeral services will be held, Saturday, October 3, 2015 at 2:00 PM at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids with Rev. Steve Conwell and Rev. Larry Matthews officiating.
The family will receive friends Saturday, beginning at 1:00 PM at Massey Funeral Home prior to services.

William 'Billy' Ernest Herbert Sr.

William “Billy” Ernest Herbert, Sr., age 84, of High Point, previously of Weldon, passed away on Wednesday, September 30, 2015.

He was the son of the late William Alfred and Lucille Dozier Herbert.

Billy served his country in the US Air Force. He was a graduate of Wesleyan College, received a Master of Divinity degree from Duke University, and was a member of the Eastern District of North Carolina Conference of The United Methodist Church serving as minister of several churches in eastern North Carolina.

He was retired as Junior Vice President of W.S. Clark and Sons in Tarboro, NC ,and was also a Mason.

He is survived by his wife, Frances Buck Herbert; his daughters, Pamela H. Gregory and her husband, Mark of Greensboro, Karen H. Mueller and her husband, Thomas of Greensboro, Lori H. Bagwell and her husband, Woody of Winterville; his son, William “Bill” Herbert of Portsmouth, VA; 17 grandchildren; and 23 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be on Tuesday, October 6, 2015 at 2:00 PM at the chapel of Askew Funeral and Cremation Services with Pastor Chuck Barber officiating.

Interment will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery in Weldon.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, October 6, 2015 from 12:30 PM until service time at Askew Funeral and Cremation Services.

Nita Mae Spence, 83, died Saturday, October 3, 2015 at her residence in Colonial Heights.

Nita was born December 10, 1931 in Northampton County to the late Wayland Bass and Lena Matthews Bass.

In addition to her parents, Nita was preceded in death by her husband, Pete Spence; brothers, David and Herman Bass; sister, Lily Mae Paul and granddaughter, Christy Michelle Spence.

Surviving are her sons, David E. Spence and wife Judy, of Chester, VA, Jerry Spence and wife, Tammie, of Colonial Heights; brother, James Bass and wife, Barbara, of Richmond; sister, Maggie Turner of Roanoke Rapids and a special friend of the family whom she thought the world, Roy Bacon.

Also surviving are ten grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren.

Rev. Michael Little will conduct a graveside service at Crestview Memorial Cemetery Thursday, October 8, 2015 at 2:00pm.

The family will receive friends at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service the same day prior to the graveside service beginning at 12:00 pm.

The family has requested memorial contributions be made to Encompass Hospice: 1030 Bon Air Rd. Richmond, VA 23225.

Margaret Crew Draper age 81, of Jackson, NC passed away Friday, October 2, 2015 at Kindred Hospital In Greensboro, NC.

Margaret was bon March 15, 1934 in Wayne County, NC, the daughter of the late Joseph Elmo Crew and Rennie Brewer Crew. She lived most of her life in and around the town of Jackson.
She was preceded in death by a son, Douglas Wayne Draper and a brother, Billy Crew.
She is survived by her son, Kent Wiggins, his wife Charlene; grandchildren, Matthew and Shannon Wiggins all of Cary, NC.
A very special friend, who was like a son, John Young and his family of Jackson; a brother, Earl Thomas Crew and his wife Brenda of Rich Square. Also her step children, Brenda Draper Byrum, Donna Draper Newsome and Calvin Draper Jr. and their families; nieces Kelly King and Shelley Griffis , nephews, Steven Crew and Jay Crew, their families and their mother, a dear friend, Jean Rushing of Brunswick, GA.
Margaret handled all of her funeral arrangements. She chose cremation and her ashes will be scattered at a later time as instructed.
The family will received friends Saturday, October 10, 2015, from 3:00 until 5:00 PM at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson, NC.

Ann Marie Jenkins Critcher, age 75, of Roanoke Rapids, passed away on Saturday, October 3, 2015.

She was the daughter of the late Eugene Harvey and Minnie Walker Jenkins.

She was a loving wife and loved her family and friends.

Ann loved Calvary Church where she attended her whole life.

She was a wonderful cook and was famous for her macaroni and cheese.

Ann and her husband, Bobby loved flowers and enjoyed maintaining a beautiful yard that won several awards.

Ann was survived by her husband of over 52 years, Bobby B. Critcher; her sister, Erma Jenkins Chichester and her husband, J.P. of Chesapeake; and several nieces and nephews.

Her funeral services will be on Wednesday, October 7, 2015 at 2:00 PM at Calvary United Methodist Church, 136 Calvary Church Road, Littleton, NC, 27850 with Rev. Hunter Preston officiating.

Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends prior to the service on Wednesday, October 7, 2015 from 12:30 PM until 2:00 PM in the sanctuary at Calvary United Methodist Church in Littleton.

Mr. James Allen Tripp age 63, of Aulander, NC passed away Monday, October 5, 2015 at Vidant Roanoke-Chowan Hospital.

Mr. Tripp was born July 29, 1952 in Windsor, NC. He was preceded in death by his father, Willie “Sam” Tripp.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara Rhea Tripp, his son, Jason Tripp and his daughter Alyvia Akkerman. His daughter, Renee Freeman and her children, Brooke and Sarah. His mother, Evelyn Brown Tripp of Aulander. His sister, Joyce Mitchell and her son Caleb Mitchell of Washington, NC.
Graveside services will be held Friday, October 9, 2015 at 11:00 AM at The Tripp Family Cemetery with Rev. Buck Leary officiating.
The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Aulander, NC, Thursday, October 8, 2015 from 7:00 until 8:30 PM and other times at the home.

Mr. Robert Henry Jones age 71 of Roanoke Rapids, NC passed away Tuesday, October 6, 2015 at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill, NC.

Mr. Jones was born October 29, 1943 in Emporia, VA, the son of the late Henry Jones and Catherine House Jones.
He is survived by his wife, Cheryl Thomas Jones, his daughters, Teresa Roberts (Doug), Jane Hasty (Steve), all of Roanoke Rapids, two sons, James Grant (Betty) of Jackson, NC and Matthew Jensen (Crystal) of Roanoke Rapids. Two sisters, Ruby Delbridge (Gilliam) and Jeanie Grizzard (Jerry). Nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Walter Herbert Dunn, age 82, of Enfield, passed away on Friday, October 9, 2015.

He was the son of the late Mason and Ella Louisa Dunn.

Walter grew up in Enfield, NC and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He retired from Sears and Roebuck with 35 years, 4 months, and 19 days.

He is survived by his daughters, Bobbie Brown and her husband, Ernest of Enfield, Clara Reagan and her husband, Richard of Roanoke Rapids, Rene Bedell and her husband, Richard of Ocala, FL, Nita Monahan and her husband, Don of Sunrise, FL, Cathy Barnett of Fort Myers, FL; his son, Mason Dunn of High Springs, FL; his brother, Robert Dunn of Enfield; thirteen grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be on Monday, October 12, 2015 at 11:00 AM at Whitakers Chapel Church, 5356 Thirteen Bridges Road, Enfield, NC.

Interment will follow in the cemetery of Whitakers Chapel Church.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, October 11, 2015 from 4:00 to 6:00 PM at Askew Funeral and Cremation Services.

Joyce Sadler Ingram, 75, of Gaston, passed away Sunday, October 11, 2015 at Halifax Regional Medical Center.

Joyce was born May 28, 1940, in Northampton County to the late Charlie Sadler and Pattie John Jordan Sadler. She was also preceded in death by a special friend Robert “Bobby” Johnson; her sisters: Edith Mae Chambliss and Emma Jane Skipper; her brother Charlie Sadler.

She was a member of Roanoke Rapids Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Joyce was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and sister. She never met a stranger and loved everybody. She loved her church, her church family and the Lord. Joyce also loved all animals.

She is survived by her sons: James Edgar Johnston and John Anthony Johnston and his wife Angie; her daughters: Joyce M. Johnston, Patricia Diane Nowell and Donna Darlene Johnson and her husband Wade; her brother: Donald Sadler and his wife Pat; her sister: Nannie Faye Bateman; her grandchildren: Michelle Mercer and her husband Johnnie Ray, James Ray Peterson and his wife Glenda, Ruby Peterson, Justin Tyler Spence and his wife Rachel, Anna Ray Woodruff and Heather Newton all of Roanoke Rapids; and ten great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, October 14, 2015 at Roanoke Rapids Pentecostal Holiness Church with Rev. D.A. Leonard officiating. Burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:30 – 1:30 P.M. Wednesday at the church.

Mrs. Elsie Perry Harrison age 90, of Ahoskie, NC passed away Tuesday, October 13, 2015 at Vidant Roanoke-Chowan Hospital.

Mrs. Harrison was born August 6, 1925 in Hertford County, NC the daughter of the late Percy W. Perry and Hattie Copeland Perry. She was also predeceased by her first husband Jesse Thomas Piland Sr., two grandchildren, Bradley Thomas Garris and William Jesse Bailey and two sisters Jean Castelow and Judy Harris.

She was a current member of Higher Ground Pentecostal Holiness Church and a former member of Meherrin Baptist Church.

She is survived by her husband Cola Harrison. Four children, Jesse Thomas Piland and his wife Brenda of St. John’s, June Piland Garris of Florida, Vicky L. Piland of Powellsville and Rebecca Piland Smith of Washington, NC. A step-daughter, Angela Smithwick of Ahoskie. A brother, Earl Perry and two sisters, Erlene Davis and Edith Perry. Her grandchildren, John E. Garris, Christopher Thomas Bailey, Daniel Edwards and Richard Larry Edwards. Eleven great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held Friday, October 16, 2015 at 2:00 PM at Meherrin Baptist Church Cemetery in Murfreesboro, NC.

Rosa Birdsong Mumford age 87, of Roanoke Rapids, NC passed away Thursday, October 15, 2015, at Signature Health Care in Roanoke Rapids.

Mrs. Mumford was born August 26, 1928 in Weldon, NC, the daughter of the late Willie J. Birdsong and Mary Elizabeth Gay Birdsong. She was also preceded in death by her children, Edwin Birdsong, Bobby Birdsong and Nita Birdsong.
She is survived by her children, Judy Gibson of Actavista, VA, Rose Huff and her husband Dave of Lemoore, California, Steve Spangler of Hurt, VA, Loretta Bailess and husband Carroll of Hurt, VA and Deloris Pulliam and her husband Gary of Roanoke Rapids. Eight grandchildren, Tammy Birdsong, Robbie Birdsong and his wife Jerri Kaye, Stephen Sloan and his wife Nicole, Ricky “Chubby” Birdsong, Michael Bailess and his wife Shannon, Kevin Bailess and his wife Kelly, Blair Huff, and Mary Beth Reed and her husband Terry. Also eighteen great grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held Saturday, October 17, 2015 at 2:00 PM at Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids with Rev. Danny Jones officiating.
The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home Saturday from 12:30 until 1:45 PM prior to services at the cemetery.

Ruth Anne Keye Shorther

Ruth Anne Keye Shorter of Littleton, NC, formerly of Chesterfield County, VA, entered into the hope for which she had prepared, to see her Savior face to face.  

She is survived by her loving husband of 38 years, Paul A. Shorter, Sr., her children, R. Benjamin Bishop (Laura), Candy White, and Paul Shorter, Jr. (Clair), her grandchildren, Sydney Gutierrez (Eric), Tyler and Justin Bishop, Blake and Ella Shorter as well as great –granddaughter Aubree Gutierrez.

Ruth Anne  graduated  from Thomas Dale H. S. and went to work as a teaching assistant at Henning Elementary, the Virginia State Prison, Richmond City Jail as a Classification Officer and the Chesterfield County Jail as Chief Classification Officer.

After approximately 20 years, she enrolled at VCU where she received a Bachelor’s degree and a teaching certificate.

After graduation, Ruth Anne taught at Bensley Elementary in Chesterfield County for 11 years before retiring.

She will be remembered as a servant of the Lord having taught Sunday School for young people for 21 years.

 Ruth Anne was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother.  

She will always be remembered for her green thumb and the beautiful quilts she made.

The services will be at Lake Gaston Baptist Church, 128 Lynwood Rd., Littleton, NC where family will receive friends at 11:00 am on Monday, October 26, 2015. The funeral service will be held following the visitation at 12:00 noon with internment at 1 p.m. in the church cemetery followed by lunch for all family and friends in the Family Life Center.  

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Lake Gaston Baptist Church Building Fund.

Jean Bailey Nelms

Jean Bailey Nelms, 76, of Hwy 903, Halifax, died on Wednesday, October 21, 2015, surrounded by her loving family, at UNC Hospitals, Chapel Hill.

She was predeceased by her loving husband, James Oliver Nelms, Sr.; her parents, Earl and Ellen Bailey; and a brother, Wayne Bailey.

Jean was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a strong Christian lady with a big heart and loved everybody. She was a lifetime member of Pierce’s Campground United Methodist Church until it’s closing when she became a member at Ebenezer United Methodist Church

Mrs. Nelms is survived by five children: Jimmy Nelms of Raleigh; Rev. Wade Nelms of Newport; Debra Nelms Walls of Roanoke Rapids; Eddie Nelms of the home; and Sharon Nelms Oliver (Chuck) of Roanoke Rapids. Also seven grandchildren: Billy Walls, Jeannie Walls, Justin Nelms, Jamie Oliver, Lauren Oliver, Cody Nelms, and Rebecca Nelms; and three great-grandchildren: Ace Nelms, Camdyn Grace Nelms and Novalee Carter. She is also survived by her brother, Lewis Bailey (Judy) of Bowdon, GA.

Graveside services will be held 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, October 27, 2015 at Forest Hills Cemetery in Nashville, NC with Rev. Steve Formo officiating. The family will receive friends from 7:00 – 8:30 P.M. Monday, October 26, 2015 at Hockaday Funeral and cremation Service and other times at her home.

Margaret Ann Hughes Jordan, age 88 of Jackson, NC passed away Sunday, October 25, 2015 at Halifax Regional Medical Center in Roanoke Rapids, NC.

Margaret Ann was born February 6, 1927, the daughter of the late Gilmer Hughes and Margaret Futrell Hughes.

She was a member of Jackson Baptist Church.
She is survived by a first cousin, Doris Cones of Suffolk, VA, two second cousins Dr. Ken Boham and Susie Carlson, along with many other Hughes cousins.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, October 27, 2015 at 3:00 PM at Jackson Baptist Church in Jackson, NC with Rev. Warren Heitzenrater officiating. Burial will follow at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Cherished memories will forever remain in the hearts of: his children, Lorraine High of Roanoke Rapids ,North Carolina Nichole Jones (Royal) of Springfield, Virginia, Elton Floyd (Donna) of Maryland, Jerome Squire of Sanford, North Carolina, Richard Squire of Greenville, North Carolina and Charles Squire (Kathy) of Maryland; 10 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; his siblings, Rose Squire, Elizabeth Squire, Dorothy Squire, Geraldine Scott (Shelton) and Jeraldine Butcher Roberts (Danny) all of Gaston, North Carolina; Leon Squire of Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, David Louis Squire of Gaston, North Carolina, Warner Squire, Jr. (Mary) and Gilbert Squire all of West Palm, Florida; his fiancé, Joyce Kearney of Halifax, North Carolina a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

 

Faison's Funeral Home, Inc. 301 Park Street, Seaboard, North Carolina, has been entrusted with the arrangements, where Mr. Squire will lie in repose from 2 to 7 p.m. on Friday, October 30, 2015.

 

Homegoing Services; honoring his life, love and legacy, will commence at 12 noon on Saturday, October 31, 2015 at Gaston Middle School, 152 Hurricane Drive (off Broughton Street), Gaston, North Carolina 27832, with Bishop Wayne I. Welch, Sr. delivering words of comfort. He will be laid to rest in the Squire Memorial Gardens, Garysburg, North Carolina. Mr. Squire will lie in state from 10:30 a.m. to Noon on the day of the service in the school's auditorium.
